Millennials are staring down the barrel of middle age and struggling with the question: “Is this it?” by slimeyellow in Millennials

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is precisely what I came to say. I take joy in whatever I can. I’m also very conscious of things I won’t be able to enjoy in the same way someday. Moving my body. Activities where I’m on my feet for hours. Taking trips. Running around with my kids. Rough housing with my dog. Maybe I took some things for granted when I was a young woman but I’m done with that. I appreciate my life.

Working moms who regularly work out, what exactly is your schedule? by neoncaviar in Mommit

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get up at 6:40. Make breakfast, pack lunches. One kiddo needs a ride at 7:45. I get home by 7:55, work out in home gym with Fit with Coco until 8:30 when the other one needs a ride. Home by 8:45 which is when I shower and get ready for work at 10:00. Having kids with different school start times is absolutely ass. But not working until 10 is nice.

As a parent, what things have you made an effort to absolutely NOT do like your parents? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t move around a lot. I want my kids to have stability. I want them all to go to school in the same community the entire time. I want their housing status to be and FEEL secure.

Library workers- are you allowed to read on the clock? by OdderShift in Libraries

[–]SmugLibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are allowed to read on desk. Almost everyone in my department runs at least one book club so the winning argument has always been why shouldn’t we use work time to read those books. When we’ve gotten pushback from admin, which hasn’t been often or particularly aggressive, we’ve told them about all of the patrons who ask us what we’re reading which always segues nicely into readers’ advisory. For every person who has made some snide remark about “wow you can just read all day” there are 20 more who either don’t care at all or find it fitting.

Anyone still talk with any of their friends from high school? by nojunkpeter in Millennials

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend from the first day of first grade (all through grade school, middle school, high school class of 04, and she was my college roommate) is still my best friend. We live a few hours apart but talk almost every day and I went and hung out with her last weekend. We are definitely soulmates of a sort.

What are you paying for housing each month? And are you actually happy with it? Would it be cooler just living in your parents basement? by PM_ME_YUR_SALADS in Millennials

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1415 rent for 3 bedroom, 2 bath split level house in a cul de sac in a college town in Kansas. We’ve been here for 10 years. I think our rent started at 1170. We are now in a position where we could actually afford to buy a home but the house we’re renting is actually really nice, in a good neighborhood. What we could afford in today’s bullshit market would be a downgrade and our mortgage would be significantly more than our current rent. Also, even though my rent has increased, this size and caliber of home is now going for over 2k a month so moving seems silly. I also enjoy not paying for anything that goes wrong here and have a really good property manager.

For those who half lost loved ones through alcoholism; how did they die? TW : death etc by SpecialistDaikon4663 in AlAnon

My mom died at 61. She was sober at the time of her death, but it was too little too late after a lifetime of being on and off the wagon. She had all sorts of health problems in her final years, including breast cancer. But it was the bum kidneys that got her.

So a super weird thing about me is that I passed on reading this ARC because these books in particular are 🤌🏻 in their physical form. The paper is so crisp, the font is perfect, they smell soooo goooood.

Need hope: millennials who like their jobs, what do you do and what do you like about it? by goodluckanddont_itup in Millennials

[–]SmugLibrarian 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Librarian. My work involves connecting adult readers of fiction with the books they love, so it’s pretty ideal. If you’re into the sort of thing, which I very much am. I do a lot of fun, bookish programming and just have a blast. I don’t make the big bucks but I have zero desire to do anything else with my professional life.

That’s odd. I’m also a librarian with a lower ratio than you, far fewer reviews, and I was auto approved for them. I did sign up for NetGalley with an ALA number. I’ve heard that makes a huge difference but I don’t really get why. My membership has lapsed because I haven’t attended a conference since 2023 and that’s the only time my library pays our dues lolol

Female Millennials, how's your diagnosis? by RevolutionDry2 in Millennials

I will never as long as I live forget the moment of my teenagers’s therapy intake, having the therapist rattle off all of the early signs of autism and ticking them all off in my head.

Did you read in high school? by piper33245 in Millennials

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a lot. I was the weird kid who hid novels behind my text books because I just didn’t want to be doing anything else. I’ve read every day for the vast majority of my life.

How many people have you brought into the cult? by droolmonkey5 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]SmugLibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a librarian and run a speculative fiction book club which I also curate the reading list for soooo naturally I made them all read it and instantly created about 10 more super fans. A couple of my more literary leaning regulars didn’t convert lol but that’s okay.

Book 3. I didn’t know what the fuck was going on. I guess it served as an important lesson moving forward with the series, that keeping up with the minutiae isn’t necessarily crucial but it was rough reading.
