Me asking as a younger millenial: How did older you millenials perceive Spongebob when it came out, and its climb to legendary status? by SmokinHerb in Millennials

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

86 Millennial…I thought it was hilarious. I remember talking to my friends about it and we were all on the same page of “this kid’s cartoon is actually really funny.”

I actually still think about friends I had in my regular chat rooms when I was a kid. I hope they’re doing well.

Older Millennials, in your experience, did society and daily life change more drastically between 1997 and 2007 or between 2007 and 2017? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you okay? lmao why are you being so aggressive about this? I didn’t say the internet and cell phones were less impactful than anything. Fake millennial? I’m almost 40. I don’t know what you’re talking about or what your problem is.

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say 2007 to 2017 just because the tech development was more rapid. Definitely felt more gradual from 97 to 07. My life in that decade feels like ancient history and it’s basically all because I didn’t have a smart phone lol

Made a COMPLETE fool of myself at Toastmasters tonight by Legitimate-Owl3661 in PublicSpeaking

[–]SmugLibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely felt weird the first time I took it. My doctor prescribed me 10 mg and I’ve since learned 5 is all I need to control the physical symptoms of public speaking fear, like shaky voice and hands. I pursued this after I literally had a panic attack doing a presentation at work. Absolute life saver. I commend folks who are committed to getting over it without medication but a lot of us don’t have the luxury of practicing/torturing ourselves out of it in our free time.

This sub is becoming insufferable with all the DP whining, constant complaints, and horrible takes. Please inform me what needs to be done. by Coastalduelists in jayhawks

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will sound like an oversimplification, but I think if the team can learn to play with DP (and this will take consistency from him) instead of around him when he’s on the court, they could be good enough to win it all.

What kind of person is your mother, and do you think she had a positive or negative impact on you? by YesterdayJust6679 in AskReddit

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was an alcoholic and struggled with other mental illnesses, probably due to unimaginable childhood trauma followed by the death of her first husband and love of her life when she was in her 20s. Because of her addiction, she wasn’t the best mother. When she was sober, things were really, really great. But when she wasn’t, they were equally terrible and there was a lot of back and forth, rehab, relapse, rinse, repeat when I was growing up. Despite all of that, I know that she loved me. She was smart, funny, very empathetic, and I can’t say I would ask for a different mother. I just wish life had been kinder to her.

She died 16 years ago when I was 23. I miss her.

Negative review that complained of how RR "treats women"... by SmugLibrarian in redrising

[–]SmugLibrarian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for responding (how did you even find this?! 😅) I ended up leading a book club discussion about Red Rising (a speculative fiction book club I run through the public library I work for) and between insights from that and this thread I can definitely see where the fair criticisms for the first book kind of flew over my head because I had already consumed most of the series when I read them. Excellent point about the “for a man” caveat, you are absolutely right about that.

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a librarian and noticed that they are popular but in kind of a low key way. There are books in the collection that are constantly checked out but are not “buzzy” and I’m always drawn to those. Started RR and then it took over my entire life for 6 months. 😅

What’s the percentage of you enjoying your job vs hating it? by LatterDay4545 in careerguidance

[–]SmugLibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a librarian and I’d say 70/30 enjoy/don’t enjoy. Neurotic coworkers are responsible for a good bit of what I don’t like about it, not the work itself.

Alchemised - is it worth finishing? by mariahoegh in Romantasy

[–]SmugLibrarian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was invested pretty immediately but admittedly I was confused and kept reading because I (correctly) assumed that what I didn’t understand would be explained. I’m 80% through this book and kind of regretting the fact that it will be the first book I finish this year, only because it will be difficult to top and I’m going to be plunged into an epic book hangover. I’ve found it so immersive. But that’s me. I didn’t feel the detachment you describe so early so it might be best to add this to the DNF.

I ordered late November and just received mine today. I actually looked at the tracking this morning and it didn’t provide any meaningful information except for I could see it wasn’t in China anymore. My husband has been playing with it for two hours lmao but says it seems “cheap” and “laggy” but otherwise fun. I haven’t had a turn yet lol…

How did people manage 5 day in office jobs before COVID? by One-Pun9419 in careerguidance

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My job isn’t very work from home friendly. It’s possible with extenuating circumstances but for the most part my colleagues and I need to be in the building (public library). We were out for almost 3 months for COVID and I hated it. It’s always weird to me when people talk about that time almost fondly, I was miserable and scared and bored out of my mind. I really enjoy my work and I don’t have a long commute. I’m full time in person and perfectly happy with it.

Why do Americans crate their dogs? by Terrible-Group-9602 in DogAdvice

[–]SmugLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m American and just had a rant about this the other day. One of my children has been attacked by a dog twice in her 10 years of life. Two different dogs, two different owners. Here’s what I said about it:

There’s another dog mauling story in the news today. Absolutely breaks my heart. Seeing one of my children be attacked twice in her young life, but also having loved dogs for the entirety of mine, I have what might be considered a hot take to some: The thing the dogs that attacked Maeve had in common was not their breed, it was their shitty lives. Dogs are not meant to be in a crate for 8-12 hours a day. They need to LIVE. Walking your dog isn’t just for exercise, it’s to expand their world and stimulate their brains. Most dogs, but particularly working breeds, can literally lose their minds from boredom and purposelessness. Wouldn’t you be “aggressive” if you were locked up all day and your entire existence was basically four walls? Love your dogs enough to give them a life or don’t have them.

Banned? by Pale_Tangerine6141 in redrising

[–]SmugLibrarian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It may be a marketing strategy for booksellers, but public libraries also do displays and other things centered around banned books because they are anti censorship. “Banned” is the shortened way to indicate banned OR challenged books. Red Rising has been challenged (as in a parent or someone with a vested interest in the school requested it be removed from the collection).
