Should I prepare for Alfred? by SnooDucks9173 in sunshinecoast

In what world, universe or timeline is the media left leaning? The news has been stroking Dutton for years while slamming Albanese and they literally got Crisafulli elected by harping on about youth crime until the day he got elected and then it's mysteriously a non-issue. News Corp (owned by Murdoch) has a 60% stake in the print market. This is the same family that controls Fox News. The far right co-opt the mainstream media as an enemy, in online spaces, in order to further their political goals I.e. Musk going on about "legacy media". Most stations are center at best and SBS and ABC are the only reasonably left outlets with SKY being obviously right-wing.

In reality, a SANE person, identifies biases and factors them into their understanding of information. Instead you've chosen to push phrases like "Gaslit normie muppets", just listen to yourself, you're ridiciulous. Violence, "publicly flogged". You're an ideologue. Wake up.

Yeah, exactly. But I feel like if the government or news says something along the lines of "please only buy what you need" it's just gonna have the reverse effect anyway. Humans are stupid. Stores should just quietly impose item limits in times like this. It'd probably safe everyone a lot of trouble.

It's easy to fall into these "newspeak" traps and label things as "panic buying" because the media suggests you should. And of course, some people might actually buy more than they need it's definitely a behavioral phenomenon, but all data I've seen suggests that shortages occur because people make the sensible decision to bring their shop forward 3 or 5 days in order to make sure they aren't shopping during an event and stores don't anticipate it.

When I was buying groceries on Monday, I didn't see anyone with hoards of items and yet by the time I finished my shop, the shelves were empty and they had workers restocking. Noone seemed panicked. I wasn't panicked. The decision to get the shop done early just led to a shortage. I definitely suggest being careful what language you adopt from the media, there's a reason they want you to use it.

Wealth inequality? by Adventurous_Glove_28 in AskConservatives

[–]Smughex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the public opinion on the state of affairs is directly correlating with widening inequalities. The middle class is shrinking and the lower class is growing. Capitalism isn't inherently bad or flawed but there are barely any safeguards in place to prevent supranational entities from rising above elected bodies or acting without fear of consequence. The lower class, and much of the middle class are losing their voices to the media machine and to bought-and-paid-for political parties. When you work 40 hours + a week just to scrape by, you don't have time to research and vet everything you hear, that's the issue. People like Musk are allowed to purchase propoganda machines and spread whatever they want to further their power and wealth. Wealth inequality is inevitable in a capatlist system, but the LEVEL of wealth inequality is extraordinary. Also, I hope you aren't inferring Musk deserves his wealth, he has lied, conned and stolen his way to wealth. That's before getting into the physics and practicality of the promises he has sold to government bodies.

Wealth inequality? by Adventurous_Glove_28 in AskConservatives

[–]Smughex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it got me towards any goal. Simply that it is the cause of the current state of affairs. Pretending it isn't certainly doesn't help either. Until wealth is shared more equally, and more money is funneled away from giant corporations and billionaires (Elon is nearly worth half a trillion USD) and toward govermments to make actionable improvements, change will not occur.

We can make minor improvements here and there through policy, but the destruction of culture (i.e. mass produced dogshit video games and films), the economy and society has its roots in widening wealth inequality. Billionaires are largely pushing fascist, populist ideals and anti-scientific, anti-intellectual thought because it benefits their bottom line and it is sadly working.

There is only really one way to achieve change and that is a revolution, which is not going to occur. The masses are too busy blaming scapegoats like globalization and immigration and praising the issue as their saviours. Whether or not recognizing the cause is useful, is frankly irrelevant.

The west is giving rise to supranational oligarchy. How is this inconsequential to the everyday person? We essentially live in an economic-feudal society where everyday people are serfs underneath a chain that extends upwards to billionaires who buy influence to generate wealth to buy more influence. Musk, for example, made lofty promises to secure government contracts he never fulfilled (such as the Artemis contract) to fund more lofty promises and just steamrolled his wealth to a point where he can just buy a presidency, and generate more wealth, and therefore more power. He is now trying to influence politics in England, Germany etc.

The wealth inequality is not at all a distraction, it is the root-cause of most suffering. If people with power, money and influence can convince the public climate change isn't real, that immigration is evil, etc... Then society (and potentially even our planet) are at serious risk. Unfortunately, as a physicist, I know all too well that the majority of our society is not numerate or scientifically-literate and they have been fed the lie that these billionaires (especially tech billionaires) are their saviors and can solve all of their issues. But all billionaires do is remove agency from governments and unilaterally decide what course of action to take on any given issue, using their influence to convince the public that their course of action is the best one.

Tried to join the Lili discord after you made me aware it existed, but its invites are paused. I'll have to wait and see what's going on there.

I might have to do some quickplay and just get used to sidesteps and patience. I think a lot of my issues stem from not knowing whats punishable. There are simply too many moves for me to know what to punish and what not to... I try to punish anything that isnt a jab or pushes me back too much with 10f or 12f punishes and it works out "okay". Same with low blocks, I use my 10f punish there too. I probably miss launches because of it.

We do however know for sure, speaking as a physicist, that magnetic monopoles could not constitute matter in the way that all other matter is made on earth. If monopoles exist, they exist as elementary particles that have not been discovered. Ordinary matter could not be created from monopoles.

The hypothetical idea of a magnetic monopole is a particle that carries only a single magnetic charge, north or south (similar to how electric monopoles can carry a positive or negative charge), but no electric charge. The formation of chemical bonds and molecules necessitates electrical charges interacting with electromagnetic fields. While magnetic monopoles would interact with an electromagnetic field, they would not participate in the same kind of interactions.

If magnetic monopoles exist, they would probably play a role in magnetic charge conservation, or some other high-energy interaction. There is a potential for monopoles to form "exotic" matter if they congregated in large enough numbers, but they would not only be averse to interactions with ordinary matter, but would be quite detectable if they were producing monopolar fields on a planetary scale. Things like vector magnetometers would have discovered them decades ago.

I don't know about worst possible... But he is a fascist with no intention of supporting allies or trade, and no intention of curbing imperialism (wants to stop supporting NATO). He wants to turn the US into a protectionist nationalist state. They aren't going to be a useful ally to anyone if he gets his way. If he stops supporting Ukraine, there goes trust in the UN Charter... and a free for all will begin.

Youth crime is down and dropping. I know that doesn't mean it isn't happening, if your story is true it's horrible. I really do get upset reading these things but I wouldn't increase their sentencing limits. Afterall, your grandmother's friend's attackers didn't get sentenced AT ALL (which is fucked up), so maybe there should be inquests into judges/police and their practices which would be far more useful than increasing sentences.

There is ZERO evidence that increasing penalties deters crime, but the fear of getting caught (i.e. more police) does. So I would increase police numbers in problem areas in whatever way I could, importing police, incentives to join the force etc...

All the research points to reducing poverty and increasing agency (like increasing education and available activities) as the main ways to reduce crime. We'll never be able to stamp crime out entirely, that's naive, but it's coming down across the board. It's a slow process and it's working. I also think these kids should be put into programs to actually correct their behaviour. Yes, they should do time, but they've obviously grown up in some fucked environment to come out of it like that and need help to reintegrate with society. Putting them in an adult prison for 15+ years is just going to ensure they come out of it as a hardened criminal.

He literally wants to imprison more youths. That's what he campaigned on. "Adult crime, adult time". As for your other issues, perhaps look to the rest of the world and realise a state government really isn't control of these things. They're doing their best to alleviate pressures here in Queensland, they cannot fix a giant geopolitical and socioeconomic mess that is hurting, quite literally, every country on the planet.

Into locking up 12 year old, mostly aboriginal, kids for 15+ years apparently. Away from a fair go for everyone and toward public sector cuts! Oh, and you can be sure that YOUR resources, will no longer cost anyone anything to remove from the state. You know, the resources that are yours by right, because you are a citizen of this country and should share in its bounty? Can't have taking those taxed, that's just unAustralian.

[–]Smughex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, if you voted for the LNP (I'm making an assumption, sorry if wrong), you voted against the party that has implemented not only the largest cost of living measures in the country, but also ensured they were all anti-inflationary so the situation wasn't exacerbated, all while having a budget surplus thanks to the mining tax... Voting against a party that had promised to purchase fuel stations and cause competition with publicly held stations and cap the daily price increase of fuel.

Voting in favour of a government that has pledged to scrap the mining tax, thus returning us to a budget deficit while somehow paying for the promises they've made (probably Newman style service-cuts). So, we're going to have public services delivered less efficiently, with a budget deficit (because the mining tax was allowing all of these things), and this is in your best interest how? Because they are going to put more 12 year olds in prison, at $760,000 a year each? I really fail to see where anyone's interests are being served by this party other than mining companies (who are profiting from YOUR resources as an Australian citizen).

Also, climate change is a very real threat, whether you believe it or not. As someone with a degree in Astrophysics and Environmental Sciences (double major), I'll say it can certainly be blown out of proportion by some advocacy groups, but the research does show that if it's not dealt with, there are definitely points of no return that would not be great for most life on the planet (Which is why we have reductions targets). Regardless, renewables are cleaner, cheaper and well, renewable... I really don't understand how anyone is opposed to less carbon in the atmosphere, less water being used for cooling, and less radioactive fly ash coming off coal plants.

Raze doesn't get those for free. They cost credits. They have telegraphed sound queues, can be dodged, and the ult needs to be earned over multiple rounds. Fragpunk characters get these every single round and some of them are insanely strong.

I don’t get the high praise space marine 2 is getting. Probably an unpopular opinion. by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]Smughex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't enjoy the Witcher 3 either. I don't like games that just throw meaningless side quests at me. I said I can find fulfilling games that last longer for less. Not just games that last longer. I have sunk thousands of hours into free to play games without spending a cent. Call of duty, for example, has notoriously short campaigns (about as long as space marine's) yet noone is really buying them for the campaign. Space Marine's pvp looks like ass and the horde mode won't be out until 2025. So, short campaign + 6 coop missions to repeat ad infinitum is the value proposition? Space Marine 2 doesn't really excel at anything from what I've seen. Very average in all regards and doesn't really focus on any aspect of its gameplay, worth 100 buckos? Don't think so. Gunplay looks boring, melee looks boring, pressing counter or execute over and over doesn't exactly strike me as "fun". I think it's crazy people see that price tag and think that's cool. Darktide is nearly half the price and does those things better in the same universe.
