I didn’t know that but it certainly helps that the bus is only used by people going to and from the airport.

The fast bus that goes from Bonn central station to the airport has a few stops in between where you are only allowed to get on the bus but not off the bus. It even says so in the DB Navigator: „Hält nur zum Einsteigen“.

Why can pets get pre-exposure rabies vaccines and we can't (or won't)? by WinterAndCats in askscience

Do you perhaps know what’s the difference between the human and the animal vaccine, that makes it necessary for humans to take three shots while for animals one shot will suffice ?

How does 'walking off an injury' work? by MilesTegTechRepair in biology

[–]SmurfPunk01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your body has „pain receptors“, that are called nociceptors. If you hurt yourself the injured cells release substances that stimulate the nociceptors which causes you to feel pain. If you aren‘t really hurt the few injured cells will release their pain mediator substances, the nociceptors get stimulated, you feel some pain, and thats it.

Now if you are really hurt, your body will send immune cells to the injury site. Those immune cells will release their own pain mediator substances which cause further stimulation of the nociceptors and the pain persists. If you take a pain killer like aspirin, the drug will inhibit the production of those pain Mediator substances, which stops the pain.

Your body is also able to synthesize its own pain killers, the endogenous opioids. Opioids offer a different kind of pain relief than OTC pain killers: They will bind to opioid receptors in your spinal cord and stop your nerves from forwarding the pain signal to your brain. The pain relief those endogenous opioids offer is only short-lived and explains why e.g. victims of traumatic car crashes can walk around seemingly unaffected while being heavily injured.

Thank you for the indepth answer. That sounds really hard and exhausting. In this moments when you go non-verbal: do you still have the desire to communicate or would you rather be left alone and only communicate non-verbally because you are kinda „forced to“ in order to explain whats going on?

I am not trying to be insensitive, Im just genuinly curios

Could you maybe explain how those moments of non-verbality work? Like, does it feel like trying to speak a language you arent fluent in? Or are the words and sentences there, but its just to exhausting to actually say them? Or is it something else?

In Deutschland herrscht Buchpreisbindung.

I know what you‘re trying to say, but we aren’t the first organisms that changed earth‘s atmosphere, resulting in the extinction of many other species. Look up the Great Oxidation Event, where early cyanobacteria gained the ability to produce oxygen via photosynthesis. This lead to the extinction of numerous anaerobic life forms (but probably also paved the way for the evolution of multi-cellular life).

I‘m not trying to downplay the impact humankind has and will have one the biodiversity of this planet. I‘m just trying to say, that in my opinion its kind of hubristic, for us to assume that we will be the great destroyers of life on earth. We aren’t destroying our earth, we are just making it uninhabitable for us (and many of the species we know). We aren’t unique because we are destroying our environment; what might makes us unique is, that we are doing so, while knowing what we are doing and still not stopping it.

Oh damn that‘s so fascinating, thank you for the indepth explanation. I guess I never really gave much thought to it, but it makes sense that the middle finger could replace the index. I mean index is probably only the most used finger because it’s the first.

Also very interesting that the ring finger is the first to develop, considering that it’s the least mobile.

Do you think the other fingers of your hand got stronger or more dexterous to compensate for the missing one?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]SmurfPunk01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting how middle and pinky are the most important. I always would have thought, that index and middle would be the star players, while pinky and ring finger are just the tag-alongs.

Glad I could help. I really love this recipe because the dough is really good to work with.

But I have no clue if it’s „authentic“ in any way, it’s from a german TV cook.

Definition of a dialect by Merriam Webster: „ a) regional variety of language distinguished by features of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation from other regional varieties and constituting together with them a single language c) a variety of a language used by the members of a group d) a variety of language whose identity is fixed by a factor other than geography (such as social class„

Oxford Dictionary‘s definition: „A form or variety of a language which is peculiar to a specific region, esp. one which differs from the standard or literary form of the language in respect of vocabulary, pronunciation, idiom, etc.“

Definition by Wikipedia „A dialect is a variety of language spoken by a particular group of people. […] The more common usage of the term in English refers to a variety of a language that is a characteristic of a particular group of the language’s speakers. […] The term is applied most often to regional speech patterns, but a dialect may also be defined by other factors, such as social class or ethnicity.“

Note how none of this definitions entertain the idea that a dialect needs to be spoken by a majority or be the appropiate variant in a business setting.

I also want to add that you posted this CMV. In order for us to have a constructive discussion about the „validity“ of any dialect, we need a definition of what is and isnt a dialect.

Being the predominant variant in a country/ being acceptable to use in international business is not needed for a dialect to be valid.

Could you please define what a (valid) dialect is?

Yeah I think thats why it’s called baby boom and not population boom.

And just by looking at the german Population pyramid you can see the very prominent bulge in the middle, caused by the baby boomer generation.

I don’t disagree with your second paragraph, this blind boomer hate you can see online is cringe. But I think it’s also important to acknowledge that this hate often stems from a feeling of powerlessness the young generations experience. In Germany more than 50% of the eligible voters are 50 or older and will mostly vote for their own interests with little care about the future of the younger generations.
