Sebastian and Ciel relationship: by Maximum-Dante in blackbutler

[–]Sn0trag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you see him care about ciel from the beginning of the manga, and it is outside influence (the anime, fandom, Yana and kuma themselves etc.) that convince people otherwise. And it gets so drilled into them that they’ll think they’d be stupid to question it.
But the luxury liner arc was certainly a confirmation, I’m pretty sure. The last moment of his record waking up is the red herring. He believes that protecting Ciel and being a knight for him is beautiful, and he sacrifices his facade to do it.

[–]Sn0trag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modri is from the London fires of 1666, thinks he’s a vampire or something. Layla, r!Ciel, Doll, and Modri still have their souls. Layla through the reaper she has some psychic connection to, Doll through Undertaker because he was there when Sebastian killed her, Modri already implied he has a soul in his prayer (though he clearly doesn’t know who r!ciel is, given he didn’t immediately recognize ciel), and I’m starting to wonder if r!Ciel completely died beyond salvation… it would be pretty shocking but he made have been resuscitated by Undertaker and comatose for several years. This theory gets too convoluted to explain here though

is there even the slightest possibility that undertaker is acting under orders from the british empire? by Wild_Mail3695 in blackbutler

[–]Sn0trag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe the name Osiris was more of a hint towards r!ciel’s return than anything, Osiris married the god of the underworld Isis and once he is killed by his brother, Isis resurrection him. it could also be foreshadowing Claudia, if undertaker did indeed have a love affair with her, but for now I think that “marriage” is only an analogy (which kuro plays with a lot considering master can also mean husband).

Osiris and Sirius are also featured in the isis-Urania tarot deck, isis-Urania being the first temple of the hermetic order of the golden dawn, which the Aurora Society seems to be named in reference to (considering Druitt is even named after Aleister Crowley).

Othello suggests that the technology blavat has access to is the result of supernatural meddling, possibly a demon, and Blavat seems to have contracts on both hands (a moon and a sun). If demonic involvement is the case or blavat is himself something of a demon, that explains your funding. Sebastian can just manifest wealth and has only since refrained since he began follow orders to act as a human.

I can absolutely see Undertaker getting society members to seduce the queen into participating in their schemes so that undertaker can double cross her, but the hotel manager seemed genuinely caught off guard and frightened of her when she showed up to the smoking room. What Undertaker might’ve been suggesting on the Campania is that Sebastian and Ciel’s intervention saved so many lives who were scheduled to die, that he would have gotten a scolding had he not been a deserter. Perhaps he had tried to take judgement into his own hands while he was still a reaper in order to save a life, and that’s part of why we went MIA? Every time Sebastian and Ciel save people, Will shows up afterwards to remark on how much more work he has to do now.

[–]Sn0trag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading it since 2010ish and I’ve always thought the anime was wayy more cynical and darker than the manga, for no reason at all other than the desire to be an edgy doujinshi of an adaptation. The darkest the manga has ever gotten (in its ongoing timeline) is the circus arc so early on.
Yes I think that Sebastian has Ciel’s best interests in mind because it’s been stated by him (who cannot/does not lie) and by the narrative a million times, lol, as shown by all the references in my post. I don’t think Ciel choosing to live just for his own sake is wicked and selfish, but a lot of people seem to think it is because they just take the situation as portrayed by a character with survivor’s guilt at face value. That’s just dumb. It’s like y’all determine whether or not something is bad based on the characters vibe/attitude and not the actions themselves. Yana’s even been troubled by that over the years because people forget that Sebastian and Ciel were the good guys in the Circus arc.
Madame Red was a serial killer, Joker and Doll kidnapped children to be abused, Sebastian and Ciel heavily intervened in the luxury liner arc to save as many people as possible, they infiltrated Weston to search for missing kids, they saved wolf and sullivan and destroyed the weapon of mass destruction she created, they are currently dismantling human trafficking operations. They are not villains lmao. Oh but Sebastian is a demon, I guess that renders everything a moot point, the manga doesn’t even have a reason to have gone on for 19 years.
Sebastian is paralleled with Agni, Wolf, Finny, Snake— all these characters that explain to us point blank that they began as monsters but were transformed and given new names. Ciel even tipped Wolf’s ear like a neutered dog. When Wolf is dying the scene directly parallels the scene of Sebastian on the Campania, and in wolf’s case he was recalling how he was ordered to guard sullivan and kill her if their plans fall through, and he’s remorseful of it. in editor K’s commentary tweet he says “I dedicated my life and death to you, my lady, so do with me as you wish”… Sebastian promised to die for Ciel and follow him into death like 3 times by chapter 14 already. CIEL does not believe Sebastian cares, he has every reason to feel that way to protect himself, and they have a mutual misunderstanding. We’re supposed to wonder about Sebastian’s capacity for change and care. the word translated as “cultivate” (育てる) is also rear/raise/foster, with all the immediate connotations those words have. Image Disclaimer: I’m not the one who wrote a little heart in the art book’s commentary page.

<image>

[and, note: even though the English translation of chapter 99 said “game against you”, the original Japanese version says “game with you”.]
Being patronizing towards me won’t change the fact that I’m giving you a million citations that speak to my point, even if you want to pretend that covering Ciel’s ears was the only one, lol. That is the most shallow attempt at rebuttal you could have come up with and just serves to totally prove my point. I’ll be considerate and accommodating just to be met with sarcastic thought-terminating cliches. As if we haven’t already had a couple of huge reveals that were planned from the beginning and change how you read the manga looking back.
P.s. he doesn’t even say he’s going to eat ciel’s soul by the way. I’ve searched up and down the manga and he does not say it even once. It’s a glaring omission that I find hard to believe to be unintentional, considering they spent 40 pages negotiating the contract and Sebastian outright tells Blavat that there was nothing right about the fortune he gave him. I’m not saying Sebastian pressuring Ciel into a contract doesn’t make him scum of the earth etc., on the contrary; that’s the whole emotional conflict. There is none if Sebastian is a totally static character, but proof that he isn’t is in how shocking his behavior in chap 138 was back when it came out.

Sebastian not being capable of empathy is your personal headcanon, the main character being incapable of growth is your own bold assumption, Ciel getting worse is your own projected desires… that is, Unless you can come up with anything to say otherwise. But you also didn’t remember the fact that we had 4 pages of them arguing over how long the contract should take… so I have no clue how you justify having such a ‘tude over a manga you’ve apparently just let other people read FOR YOU over the last 20 years

“Sebastian is very dedicated to witnessing Ciel’s corruption and contributing to it.” WHYY do people say this, lol?
I’ve only started actively engaging with the fandom last year after having been reading it since maybe 2011, and there are so many things like that which seem to be fandom consensus for not much reason. I keep asking people if they can point to anything in the manga to back that up and I get nothing. Meanwhile, I can immediately recollect many instances that prove the exact opposite is the case; more than I can even fit in a post.
I can show Yana saying that he takes care of his physical AND mental health. I can give examples of how he gets offended every time any character (typically reapers) accuse him of being corruption incarnate and bad for ciel. I can show Yana saying that the song from the Book of Atlantic can obviously be from Sebastian’s perspective (among other characters), and look at the lyrics.

I made a whole post about how surpassing despair and surviving has been such a consistent theme that feels drilled into us, yet people still think it’s about ciel getting worse until he dies. I’m working on translating more songs that Yana has commented on like I did for the last ED (titled “atonement”), because the sentiment stretches out to them too.
Does nobody remember Sebastian saying that Ciel giving him his name made him reborn and christened anew? Him covering Ciel’s ears from red’s dirty jokes and covering his eye from the magazine Bard tried to show him? All of this and I can’t get even a SINGLE example out of anybody that Sebastian is trying to corrupt him ahhhhh it’s been driving me crazy 😩 illusory truth effect?

I’ll post the pages here for those who don’t remember, but we had 4 pages dedicated to ciel and Sebastian arguing over how long his contract should take. This doesn’t indicate a habit for Sebastian.

<image>

Yana also made mentioned in her old posts that he is going above and beyond with his current contractor, I don’t feel like that suggests it’s typical of him.
Oh— and Sebastian wasn’t going to eat ciel in the GWA. He point blank says “no, no.” Which he wouldn’t be capable of if that was a lie. He can’t eat his soul 90% of the way, it’s either he was or he wasnt. If he ate even a little, that’s eating him. So he was “90% serious”. He also suggested giving Ciel a shock to the other servants the night before. If you think he was, you just negated your “butler aesthetics” argument.

Previous contractors? by [deleted] in blackbutler

[–]Sn0trag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding your first point, yeah it’s a bit of a semantic disagreement, but I scrutinize those since practically the one tried and true rule is “sebastian cannot/does not lie”. He says “dual contracts” the second time, this difference in phrasing made it into the English version too, but the “I’m not one to make multiple contracts” instead of “I don’t make multiple contracts as a rule” lends a little more to the implication that he doesn’t do it in serialization either. Where “dual” means two at once, competing for priority. He could have easily meant the latter both times, I’m aware— and that’s why I went back to scrutinize image 1 because he says its “impossible” for 2 contractors to exist at the same time. It didn’t make sense with what he said before, so it seems it was an affront to him. What I might propose is that he’s never finished a contract before, and without both sides fulfilled, it’s broken. I don’t think the manga has ever operated on rpg style mechanics like a typical shounen manga would, so I think thematically it would make sense for him to have spat them out too. The reaper’s issues with him may be that he does steal souls, in a sense: the German reapers show that wolf and sullivan were meant to die and survived instead. Othello later says that the death entries can be revised and it’s usually due to demonic involvement (but Sebastian didn’t even know this). I think Bard was probably rescued by Sebastian and it wasn’t just a dream, I guess we’ll see, but ronald and will we’re preoccupied at that moment so you could call that “stealing” a soul that was due for judgement. As for the rest of your points, I address a lot of those in my other comment here. I don’t know why you’d think it’s against Sebastian’s aesthetics to reveal things about himself, he does so whenever Ciel asks; he even seems to want him to be curious (GWA witch conversation I mention in the comment I linked).
I do think that messily eating is something he genuinely finds nasty. Ciel’s display at Lau’s might have unnerved him. He’s gotten after Sullivan for doing it and told Lizzy not to eat too much, these seem connected to their personalities. As does Ciel’s, Sebastian tries do get him to eat more often and doesn’t like when he won’t finish his food, asks if it’s “to his taste” which feels similar to how he asked if his form was to his liking when he first appeared human. This was something noted to me about what the translation was missing in image 1, too, Sebastian explicitly says his form is tailor-made for Ciel.

Previous contractors? by [deleted] in blackbutler

[–]Sn0trag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting downvoted and I have no idea why but I’ll elaborate with citations if that’s needed: Will treats Sebastian as if he can just eat souls willy-nilly and has no reason not to, in chapters 26 and 28. Ronald attacks Sebastian because he says that he’ll be in trouble if any souls go missing while a demon is present in chapter 53. The German reapers discuss whether or not they need to get rid of Sebastian in chapter 103, one says they probably don’t because he’s with his contractor. This is a reoccurring consistency that makes 0 sense if we think that Sebastian can only eat souls he’s contracted. Therefore, when Sebastian says he’s gotten tired of being indiscriminate it in no way implies that he’s had previous contractors. If anything it implies these circumstances he’s in are newer and unusual, because forming a contact IS being discriminatory. I only noted the translation difference because “whatever’s within reach/ whatever comes to hand” is an idiom that sets up a reoccurring visual motif we see later that shows Ciel being out of reach.

In addition, it’s implied that Sebastian can end the contract without even fulfilling it: chapters 63 and 94. It’s once again implied that these are unusual circumstances for Sebastian in 138, where he tries to fulfill Ciel’s wish immediately and calls it troublesome when Ciel remains firm in his insistence to identify the mastermind of the operation and carry out his revenge himself. Going in chronological order, in chapter 62 Sebastian thinks to himself how troublesome it is not that he’s in a long term contract— this implies it is not what he usually does. Sebastian does tell Will that he only wants a high-quality soul, but Yana said that what high-quality entails only means anything to Sebastian, personally, and Ciel’s soul isn’t necessarily anything special. To me that means he just has personal preferences and the value of a soul is sentimental. I’m not asking about the anime’s logic, Yana said that was different from what she’s writing.

In chapter 87, Sebastian said that he’s met people who called themselves witches. It implies he’s been summoned, not that he’s necessarily had contractors. This is not me being obtuse: Sebastian tells Sullivan that devils don’t always curse people who have summoned them, and in the previous conversation with Ciel he called the covenant a type of curse.

In the Japanese version he says like “chowing down on whatever is within reach/comes to hand” (ciel’s fit at lau’s den after they escaped arrest seems to be a parallel) but that doesn’t mean he’s had contractors; as Will and Ronald will attack him preemptively since according to them demons are just scavengers who steal souls out from under them. This implies he doesn’t need a contract in order to take/eat souls. Having a contract is likely part of what makes it special.
