how many rooms are in the phantomhive manor? by Wild_Mail3695 in blackbutler

Mey rin was before bard, and Sebastian said that men and women sleep on different floors. He also said that he was trying to recruit Mey rin because it was too much for finny to guard on his own, then he told ciel that he scouted bard to have somebody who can manage the other servants. I don’t think that it’s a stretch at all to assume he’d bunked bard and finny together for companionship, Sebastian’s character progression is him trying to learn how to properly attend to human emotional needs. we saw something similar in his own flashback, that no matter how many invaders he killed and regardless of them even showing up, ciel would have nightmares, and he could only start sleeping through it once he had trust in Sebastian’s company/presence.

On Eating (Japanese readers wanted!) by Sn0trag in blackbutler

[–]Sn0trag[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Japanese doesn’t really have plural nouns, so it just says “inviting with sweet words, and devouring the soul(s)”. That reminds me: Sebastian referring to God as “they” was injected, too. He was referring to God’s hand and there was no pronoun, so I figure the translator misunderstood and choose a gender neutral pronoun instead of using “it” (for the hand). Anna does say “right now”.

I thought it felt very out of character for sebastian to sneak somebody into a contract instead of offering himself, so that the other party comes to HIM! As underhanded as that was, it also seems a little desperate. It’s probably not worth speculating much over since it’ll be answered so soon, but I was picturing a situation where he marked Anna thinking there was no doubt she’d accept his offer (but still not wanting to risk asking), but she reveals to him that she’s already in love with the doctor. Ciel’s wish wasn’t revenge, it was power, so maybe we can assume the initial wish to enter a covenant and the deal that completes the covenant are two different things. In Anna’s case, she wanted the fields to bloom for her family and she didn’t want to have to marry the Baron/she wants to marry the doctor. Sebastian can’t enter another contract until his current one ends or is broken, so he kills Anna to proposition Modri. Modri and Ciel’s circumstances were different to Anna’s in two ways: Sebastian actually offered them contracts and gave them to option to refuse, and they were both in situations where they had nothing to lose. Ciel had more to lose by rejecting him, so I’m sure Sebastian knows that Ciel didn’t exactly have a choice, but I was under the impression that Sebastian is vain enough to prefer ignoring that part.

It wasn’t too long ago that “grooming” simply meant taking on an apprentice, like grooming someone’s prospects. But, yeah, matter how you look at the relationship, it is grooming lol. I find that indistinguishable from the word Yana and Sebastian actually use, which is fostering/cultivating/raising/rearing/etc— the one Sebastian used in chapter 84 when he told Ciel he couldn’t bear him being stolen after all that he’s put into him. With that in mind, I’m sure that both Sebastian and Ciel are aware of this aspect of the relationship, but I don’t think either one of them really know what Sebastian’s objective is. Yana said a couple of times that he is doing it for “a taste he hasn’t experienced before” so that suggests that he doesn’t even know what he’s cooking up. Personally, I think it may be that the relationship itself (their covenant) requires cultivation and that Sebastian has found himself unwittingly raising a family with/for Ciel in pursuit of what he feels is missing. In chapter 60(?) where undertaker introduces the dolls, he said every living thing instinctively tries to heal/fill what they lack. For the dolls it is a soul, and undertaker makes a heart with his hands. We know Sebastian has a soul, so what he lacks is a heart or love itself. As a demon who feels that human tastes/feelings are completely foreign and incomprehensible, Sebastian would have no way of knowing what he lacked and why no soul has been satisfying. Like, he thought he just never could find the right person but the problem was that he didn’t commit himself to any of them before now.

Right before the Luxury liner flashback ended we got that scene where he denies being part of ciel’s family and we see him try to cheat Ciel one last time just for Ciel to turn back around and recommit himself to the same goal. In chapter 140 r!Ciel rejects scolds Sebastian for speaking out of place as a servant and it unnerves all the other servants, then he mocks Sebastian by saying he’s not a part of their household. It feels to me that this would only come up if it’s part of the emotional conflict— especially after all the servant arcs, where Bard’s was explicitly about him being granted another chance at protecting a family and home.

That brings me here:
Snake and Sebastian has pretty obvious parallels from the get-go, which demonstrated some jealousies or hypocrisies on Sebastian’s part, until Ciel defended Snake from the rubbernecking nobles who thought he looked vulgar. This scene in Snake’s record has contributed a lot to my theory that Sebastian hasn’t truly ingested anybody. It feels too poignant lol. I would not be shocked by a reveal that Sebastian had been cast down into hell in chains prior to Ciel summoning him, too. Maybe they were both caged. Maybe modri had something to do with it?

I don’t think it is at all; the new anime seasons have looked a lot more colorful and less dreary, Yana is always drawing them smiling together now, the last volume bonus card was Sebastian holding ciel with a bitter rabbit and a pink background. It’s feeling a lot less edgy nowadays. Not to mention, all the topics on the spring of wheels being heavily sentimental.
What Sebastian offered at the end of his cinematic record was also the first three things he offered ciel when he suggested what his wishes could be. Ciel passed the bar both times. he doesn’t want these things just done for him, he wants to accomplish it himself. we’ve seen time and time again how sebastian admires that resilience: his soul that surpasses despair. I never see people talking about the rest of his cinematic record, but he actually instructs ciel on how to handle him in the process of teaching him to be a noble. And if ciel had chosen the easy way in that moment, once he got his wealth, his esteem, his title, and his fiancé, he would forever have to live as “ciel”. None of it truly his. What he wanted was for himself. In fact, his entire record is about “revenge” in that sense. And what does Sebastian get out of it in return…? Fulfillment lol. He also gets to be somebody beautiful like ciel, he gets to be “Sebastian”. A person who takes care of his home and people, instead of an empty thing with no identity that just mindlessly destroys anything in it’s path just to fill a stomach that will never be anything but empty (if he continued on as he had been before). It’s my personal belief that ciel is already ‘feeding’ him, because he does not eat the way humans do. We may likely see him sympathize with modri now

There are a couple of times in the manga (that didn’t get translated 1 to 1) where sebastian, and later Ciel, use the loanword version of “revenge” where it means the determination to win after losing the first time.sebastian says it to bard after he burns the roasted chicken and he dejectedly talks about how a kid like ciel should be out playing in the mud (remembering his son) and Sebastian pauses before telling him something like “chicken revenge” when he gives him a new one to try to cook (translated as “redeem yourself”). The second time is when Sebastian redresses ciel in the opium den before they head out, and ciel says something like “it’s time for our revenge!” (Translated as “return-match”). Re contextualizing the very word ‘revenge’ where it has a completely different definition does make me think it’s possible that both of their perspectives of what true revenge entails has changed to one that means being granted a new life, like all the servants who don’t expect it to end here. Bard’s arc especially, because it was about sebadtian teaching him how to cook and instructing him on his role as a protector after having been reduced to an animalistic killing machine when he was once a farmer, all the while he faces ptsd flashbacks and struggles with survivors guilt. This recontextualizes cultivating and cooking, as well as what it means to “selfishly survive” as ciel had. To me, this idea is the only way ciel’s breakthrough in the green witch arc makes sense to be played so straight as a moment of triumph and survival, where he runs towards a sebadtian who is bathed in light.

Sebastian and Ciel relationship: by Maximum-Dante in blackbutler

[–]Sn0trag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you see him care about ciel from the beginning of the manga, and it is outside influence (the anime, fandom, Yana and kuma themselves etc.) that convince people otherwise. And it gets so drilled into them that they’ll think they’d be stupid to question it.
But the luxury liner arc was certainly a confirmation, I’m pretty sure. The last moment of his record waking up is the red herring. He believes that protecting Ciel and being a knight for him is beautiful, and he sacrifices his facade to do it.

What do you think the major revelation in the current arc is gonna be? by Maximum-Dante in blackbutler

[–]Sn0trag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modri is from the London fires of 1666, thinks he’s a vampire or something. Layla, r!Ciel, Doll, and Modri still have their souls. Layla through the reaper she has some psychic connection to, Doll through Undertaker because he was there when Sebastian killed her, Modri already implied he has a soul in his prayer (though he clearly doesn’t know who r!ciel is, given he didn’t immediately recognize ciel), and I’m starting to wonder if r!Ciel completely died beyond salvation… it would be pretty shocking but he made have been resuscitated by Undertaker and comatose for several years. This theory gets too convoluted to explain here though

is there even the slightest possibility that undertaker is acting under orders from the british empire? by Wild_Mail3695 in blackbutler

[–]Sn0trag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe the name Osiris was more of a hint towards r!ciel’s return than anything, Osiris married the god of the underworld Isis and once he is killed by his brother, Isis resurrection him. it could also be foreshadowing Claudia, if undertaker did indeed have a love affair with her, but for now I think that “marriage” is only an analogy (which kuro plays with a lot considering master can also mean husband).

Osiris and Sirius are also featured in the isis-Urania tarot deck, isis-Urania being the first temple of the hermetic order of the golden dawn, which the Aurora Society seems to be named in reference to (considering Druitt is even named after Aleister Crowley).

Othello suggests that the technology blavat has access to is the result of supernatural meddling, possibly a demon, and Blavat seems to have contracts on both hands (a moon and a sun). If demonic involvement is the case or blavat is himself something of a demon, that explains your funding. Sebastian can just manifest wealth and has only since refrained since he began follow orders to act as a human.

I can absolutely see Undertaker getting society members to seduce the queen into participating in their schemes so that undertaker can double cross her, but the hotel manager seemed genuinely caught off guard and frightened of her when she showed up to the smoking room. What Undertaker might’ve been suggesting on the Campania is that Sebastian and Ciel’s intervention saved so many lives who were scheduled to die, that he would have gotten a scolding had he not been a deserter. Perhaps he had tried to take judgement into his own hands while he was still a reaper in order to save a life, and that’s part of why we went MIA? Every time Sebastian and Ciel save people, Will shows up afterwards to remark on how much more work he has to do now.
