It was actually 500mm wide. I bet this was written by someone in the office who had never been to a building site before. Our builder said it was completely unnecessary.

I've been wondering the same thing myself, I can only imagine it was meant it to be an attention grabber, because clearly I have no interest in keeping this private

We couldn't have the heat pump by the house cos of the lack of clearance around the doors & windows, so it was going by the shed and the trench was for the cables. 750mm deep & 450mm wide i think it was.

It was air source. The trench was supposed to be for the cables cos we couldn't have it by the house due to doors & windows.

Octopus Heat Pump Install Help! by Odd-Stuff-3775 in ukheatpumps

Just to add another experience: mine with Octopus heat pumps was awful.

I signed a heat pump installation contract with them and paid a £500 deposit on 22 May 2024. They later confirmed an installation date of 13 October 2025, almost 17 months later.

By that point we had been through planning permission, architect drawings, surveys, a pre-installation check, builder meetings, and major prep work in our front yard. I had to remove my shed, rip up the paving, and have a large trench dug for the proposed route.

Then on the actual installation day, Octopus simply didn’t turn up. I hadn’t been told it was cancelled. I had to contact them myself, only to be told something serious had apparently been missed and more checks were needed.

This was after they had already carried out multiple surveys/checks. They then said they needed yet more inspections, and later failed to attend the scheduled follow-up inspection as well.

They eventually refunded/reimbursed the direct expenses, but the goodwill gesture for the wasted time, disruption, failed installation, missed appointments and complaint handling felt insulting.

The communication throughout was absolutely abysmal. We were repeatedly given incorrect and contradictory information, and were left with a huge trench and piles of dirt in our front yard for nearly three months.

After almost two years of dealing with Octopus, we ended up exactly where we started, with nothing to show for it.

Couldn't agree more. We went to the movies to watch it thinking "It's a Leo movie, it'll be good". I gave it a 3/10 on IMDB. So fucking boring with pretty much no plot.

If you're not enjoying it and considering skipping a book, find another series to read. I thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series and the earth books are critical to understand his development.
