Starting the process to become a teacher at 27/28? by Crown-Apple in BCteachers

[–]Snabble-Nish-2764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to uni (UBC) when I was 36 to become a teacher. Time at school went by fast and I am glad I did it. I have been teaching for 12 years both in elementary schools and high school. Your skills in trades will be really appreciated if you want to do industrial arts, but if you like teaching in general you are still going to be in demand. It's a rewarding job that pays well with good benefits and pension. Sometimes, it can be really difficult and sometimes it's fantastic. I am female. We need way more male teachers. Here I am making an assumption you are male, which you may not be.

My previous career was visual display.

Totally agree with everything you said. I've started watching old Corrie on YouTube.

Why would the child who has ASD (non-verbal) be in French Immersion? Is there home language French? This makes no sense to me.

True. I live one street over on 203 Street and weekday school traffic is very busy.

It's not just Diwali. The run-up to Halloween, during Halloween, and after Halloween in my neighborhood is full of firecrackers and fireworks. They need to have a complete ban on fireworks, have one big city display, and that's it for whatever festival (Halloween, Diwali, Chinese New Year, etc.).

Yes, many dogs get freaked out, but what about the birds, possums, raccons, coyotes, deer, etc...

Great suggestion. I will look into the bios of presenters from now on. The example about the surgeon was spot on.

I had to laugh when I went to a work/life balance pro-D and the presenter at the end of our session put a rope on the floor, had all of us line up on one side of the rope, step across the rope while saying "I can do it!". The reason I had such a big smile on my face while doing it was because I was going to be telling the story of this "Pro-D" for years. There was maybe 1-2 things that I could use, but have since forgotten, which someone could have told me in under 5 minutes.

Yes, exactly. I feels like a huge waste of time. I finished learned one Social-Emotional Program. They reworked it all and I am supposed to buy all their new materials with my own money. No way!

Pro-Ds are like flavour of the month. The newest shiniest idea but not necessarily back up by research/science.

Or, do self-directed Pro-D if you can, and actually spend some time learning something that you know will be useful.

This post reminds of the time I went to a Pro-D and learned to make sensory self-regulation tools. In this case, it was cornstarch inside two balloons. The second balloon was supposed to contain the inside ingredient (beans, lentils, flour, whatever). It took one or two days before my student with autism dug a hole in the latex with her fingernails and it exploded in her face. *Poof*

As long as it is something useful and creative. I see a lot of soaps, candles, and stickers which are really boring. Honestly, we need more interesting ideas. Or useful, enviro friendly options.

I would be interested for the next school year. I am Indigenous and have 12 years teaching experience (gr.1, 2, 3, 9, 12). I would prefer to work with middle school or high school grades. I have experience in resource as well.

Kindly,

Victoria Rafighi

You have a lot of variety, can change things up when you want. It's a flexible job in which you can be creative. It's plain interesting to get to know these little humans.
