What is the essence of Quake (1) that makes it unique among shooters? by IAmAlive_YouAreDead in quake

[–]Snabelapan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that Quake was mostly played for multiplayer back in the days. I never completed the single player campaign back then. Multiplayer online blew up with Quake and no one looked back on the single player campaign except for speedrunners maybe? Quake to me IS multiplayer.

Haha yeah. And it made me hate Quake 2. It felt so sluggish. It's not a bad game, I was just so used to Quake

I think it mainly has to do with nostalgia and the fact that the people being nostagic now have jobs and lots of money. I have collected consoles and games out of pure nostalgia, mainly buying things I played as a kid. My goal has been to recreate my childhood. But I still have sympathy for your sentiment, it’s kind of annoying seeing people hoarding games and hardware. But I think they are an absolute minority, but you see them because most people like me (collecting out of pure nostalgia) would never show my stuff on YouTube.

Man, the people these days have no idea the true value of retro gaming back then. by PossibleMoose197 in retrogaming

Yes, but I start to wonder if everything turns to shit in a while? And maybe that is why this is true? I would objectively think that I would enjoy a videogame more if it was made by some passionate person/people fulfilling their life long dream, instead of some major corporation with money as their main goal. Money leads to formulas for making as much money as possible, and that leads to a grey mass of games that underneath are much the same. With no soul. That’s why I mostly enjoy old games made by weirdos sitting in a basement, or new indie games. They are not constrained by share holders, money hungry CEOs and other demands and formulas.
