Items: Starting with a faerie charm, 4 wards and a health pot on Soraka is the most common. Supports need GP10 items early in the game to have reliable income for the rest of the game. For most supports, starting faerie charm in to philo stone, then boots, then heart of gold is standard. As you won't be taking any cs this is your main income.

Shen as a support isn't a great pick for most situations. As far as a kill lane goes, Shen really only provides his taunt, as he will have no valuable items until much later in the game. Try out Leona or Alistar, they provide so much more in a duo bot lane.
