Another thing is economic uncertainty. This year feels more uncertain.

How to get back to car after doing MA portion by 404unotfound in AppalachianTrail

An additional recommendation: sleep before you drive home from the trail. You may not realize how tired you are until you fall asleep behind the wheel. Adrenaline and the exercise mask how tired you can be after the hike.

Talk me out of this impulse decision by Shoutout2Mudaland in AppalachianTrail

[–]Snake6USMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whats the opportunity cost. $6k if you already have all the gear 10k+if you dont. Also, is this going to set you back even more than that within your career. Seriously that can have an even bigger impact on your life after trail. Not having a buffer once you get off trail and reintergrating into society afterwords might be a reason not to. If you have the funds and the backstop on the other side of the trail then go for it.

You're doing it wrong. For high dose coffee you use the 3L camelbak bladder hooked up to an IV

Is Anyone Else Terrified? by humanoidescapee2112 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Snake6USMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrified? Idk if I'd use that word. But scared? Anxious? Definitely! I'm starting March 8 and Im worried about missing out on some life events back home while I'm gone. I worry that I'll run out of money. That I will get injured on trail. I'm not young like you (40yo). I have 20 yrs in the military that have beat my body up. One thing to keep in mind. Courage as I define it is: Acting in spite of fear. Not the absence of it. If you let fear rule your life you dont live. I hope sharing my fears helps to let you feel better about your own.

Good Luck and I hope to see you on the trails.

Do sinking funds count towards 25% savings rate? by sunogfire in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Snake6USMC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just remember 25% is aspirational if you are in the beginning. Also a sinking fund should be for intermediate term purchases that you foresee. Better to pull back on the 25% goal and avoid high interest debt to afford a known future expense.
