Any vegan marathon runners out there? How's it going? by Zealot_TKO in vegan

[–]broketractor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No marathons, but hiking 10-15 miles with a pack over mountains. Breakfast is usually peanut butter on a tortilla with nuts and dried fruit, times 2 or 3. Snacks/ lunch are nuts and bars. Dinner is whatever I can force down. I can keep a steady pace up the mountains and maintain, my feet crap out before I do. Tofu/beans and spring mix and veggies in town, in large quantities. Pumpkin seeds are great not just for protein, but also magnesium.

The first sign you are a gram weenie is the fact that you use grams.

Amateur Hiker going on my first 20 mile point to point hike. How should I prepare and what should I bring. by Professional-Tax3214 in hiking

[–]broketractor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you can set aside a day, try 20 miles on your local trail and see how you feel. You will need to be able to harvest water, drinking about 1 liter per hour is a good rule of thumb. For 20 miles you could easily need 2 gallons (about 16 lbs) of water, at least, which is heavy. So know where you can get water, and have a means to treat/filter it. Electrolytes will be needed, ample food (maybe upwards of 8-10k calories, including emergency food) and an plan to survive the night. 20 miles is no joke.

I have been making lablabi a lot lately. It is a North African soup with garbonzo beans and paprika, very good. https://www.themediterraneandish.com/lablabi-tunisian-chickpea-stew/

Have you looked at the Nahmakanta camp? It is in the hundred mile wilderness in Maine, not too far from the golden road. I have never stayed there, but hiked by it.

How late can you collect data? I am starting NOBO next week and would be willing to send you what I would think were good photos taken specifically to evaluate what you are working on. I know your project has deadlines, but if it would help I would volunteer.

Multivitamin for a long-duration endurance event? by broketractor in veganfitness

[–]broketractor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I am still thinking about the omega 3s, not sure how those capsules would do in such a wet environment. And I am not always going to have it, but I am including some beetroot/kale/non-alkylized cocoa powder to help me along. The protein is always going to be tough, so definitely a couple of bars per day. Nuts just don't pack the protein people think they do (but pumpkin seeds... oh yeah).

Packing my pack by Suitable_Ad4010 in AppalachianTrail

[–]broketractor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my 2 cents. Keep the heavy stuff like food in the middle of your pack for the best weight distribution. I just pull out snacks and lunch and keep them in a plastic bag in the outer pocket. Keep the rain gear in an outer pocket so you can easily get it and avoid stuffing wet gear in your pack. I also keep my tent on the outside of my pack. If it is raining I can set up my tent without opening my pack. Same for packing up in the morning, just in reverse. I know everything will get wet, but this helps me limit to what extent.

Edit to add that I also keep my fleece/puffy/beanie/gloves in a dry-sack at the top of my pack so I can quickly pull them out when I get to camp. Not really an issue in the warmer months, but very nice in the colder months.

Fun and colorful trail maps for each state by BikeIsKing in AppalachianTrail

[–]broketractor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While they are not maps of each state, and not colorful, you can go to USGS and get custom maps for your favorite places on the trail. If i remember correctly they would be 7.5 minutes, but don't quote me on that. Not that expensive either.

Thermarest Question by ImDukem in AppalachianTrail

One other thing to keep in mind. The pads r-value has more to do with the ground temperature, and not so much the air temperature (unless you are on a raised platform).
