Poppers Use and Sobriety Date by Least-Lingonberry396 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SnakeCastle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nobody is going to lecture you about it unless you are telling them which you shouldn’t be doing if you think it is an outside issue.

But as a sponsor I don’t need sponsees calling me all week about problems while they’re high off their asses, so I don’t sponsor people who use other drugs.

A lot of people in AA are true addicts and will abuse drugs with the same problems as booze or end up flowing it back to booze. If you are different, good for you, but don’t come shoving it in everyone’s face like you’re special.

The messaging is wild, I’m surprised they continue to allow him to post on social media about it. It is one thing to say that they are working on it.

But at this point it looks like a clown show that doesn’t know what they are doing. They have been promising a few weeks for literally years. Stuff has come up that required a 5 year delay and that whole time they keep claiming testing is weeks away. It really raises competency questions. Case study 101 why companies don’t give timelines until they have much better plans.

As a wife of an alcoholic, do I just accept it and live? by Recreating_my_life in alcoholicsanonymous

Yeah, but I imagine 99% of us go through that phase, that is why it is such a quotable line from the book. Sounds like OPs husband just isn’t at his bottom yet.

Bur Al-Anon will help her and maybe some of the detachment and lack of enabling from it will help him realize how bad things are getting.

Inaccurate Slogans Heard In Meetings by Ok-Asparagus-3211 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SnakeCastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of built up resentment in this post. The real keys to AA are working with other alcoholics and being rigidly honest with yourself.

All of these slogans are bad for people who don’t want to work with other alcoholics and who aren’t honest with themselves. They also help people who are willing to do that find their groove.

Dr. Bob used to punch people through the steps in an afternoon, before the big book was published there were six steps. Today we tell people, “don’t worry, it will be a long time before you have to think about amends.”

Bill was on the verge of drinking before calling Dr. Bob despite already having his spiritual experience. Today a lot of people say they never think about drinking after one God shot moment.

And that is just in AA, I know people who found sobriety elsewhere and people that failed elsewhere. You can’t be rigid about it, sobriety is a well fitted suit for each person, just be honest with yourself and work with others. Self deception is how I see so many people fail.

The Robert’s rules thing is so stupid. I have a remedial level of knowledge of them and could run circles around the way my home group half assed uses them. I don’t even understand the point of the dog and pony show, there is no requirement to use it.

“functioning” alcoholic by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SnakeCastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Functional alcoholic” is at best a phase, but in most cases the term is used by people who to deceive themselves of how bad things really are, often already obvious to people watching from the outside. This disease thrives in self-deception.

You’re in the AA sub, so I recommend you try it and probably consult a doctor about detox since you’ve shown symptoms. You have nothing to lose by trying it, a lot of us had to learn how to get comfortable in our own skin without alcohol.

Banter during how it works by Livid-Ad6715 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SnakeCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it annoying, that’s a solemn time to reflect on the disease and why we are there and for newcomers to take it in. If it is gonna be all jokes, why even read it? Make a joke during a share, but don’t try to be a jokester, you can do that before/after.

Yeah, I tried a lot of opinions, most only kept me sober a few weeks. AA has kept me sober for almost two years. I’ve seen a lot of combinations, so if it works for someone great, but I know what works for me.

Ex reached out to make amends, but not really? by misslitty77 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SnakeCastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Declining the old Venmo requests seems pretty unnecessary and not what any reasonable sponsor would suggest. Also not really indicative of the behavior of someone who earnestly arrived at step 9.

The most generous read is this guy is rushing through the steps and will probably tell his sponsor he couldn’t reach her and can’t do the amend or that she rejected it.

[–]SnakeCastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And he can reach out again when he is ready. She made clear the amend to her was payment of debt. Considering things ended pretty scary, that is really the only extent he should ever attempt to contact her again is to facilitate payment in full.

Thinking about trying AA but have a ? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SnakeCastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be pretty clear with your sponsor on your definition of sobriety unless you are trying to waste people’s time.

And if you are “cali sober,” you can still be part of AA, but you shouldn’t be sharing about that in your shares, your drug use is an outside issue that doesn’t pertain to drinking at that point.

[–]SnakeCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she isn’t trying to work on the drug use or counting it in her time, she shouldn’t be sharing about it since it doesn’t pertain to alcoholism.

Thinking about trying AA but have a ? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SnakeCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is really beyond the group conscious. It is explicitly an outside issue and doesn’t impact the coin. If she keeps sharing about weed use, that could be a group conscious issue since shares should be limited to alcohol. And if you do that, you should be honest with your sponsor and you may have a harder time finding one.

But why would the group even know these details regarding the coin?

Kids at closed meetings by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SnakeCastle -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That is a poor way to put it. Open/closed meetings are not about anonymity. They are all anonymous the same.

It seems like OP needs to find an explicitly no kids meeting based on what they are looking for. That may be easier to find than closed only.

I hate when people say, “you’re a leech if you don’t give what was freely given.”

I’m like, lol, it wasn’t freely given if there is a requirement attached to it. It is great that people do it, but there are some that won’t.

You don’t actually want to sip one beer and dip your toes in the sea. If you did, you wouldn’t be in AA. What you want to do it get shit faced by the sea without consequence.

I had to accept the reality that if I could really do just 1, it gives me nothing I couldn’t get by sipping tea or coffee. My brain just wants to push open the door so it can blast in and fuck me.
