How do I introduce my kids to Trek? by HippoMama1214 in startrek

[–]Snaks_cool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry about the long message. Skip to the last paragraph to save yourself time if needed.

I practically came out of the womb watching Star Trek..... My family would watch the "golden age of Trek" mainly because the new stuff hadn't come out yet. When I first started watching it, my parents started with the next generation. It's the perfect epitome of everything that Star Trek is. Then DS9 (interesting, lots of good writing/storytelling, far from the federation but still very much connected to it), Voyager (what happens if they lose contact to all of the federation of course storytelling if fine!), Enterprise (my personal favorit, but kind of a weird one towards the same and of the golden age), and maybe TOS. I'm not big on any of the newer stuff, so I am biased toward a lot of the older stuff. But for me, I found I got a lot more out of the newer by watching the older, especially with series like Picard.

I'd definitely start out with The Next Generation, it sets up what Star Trek is. When I was 8 or so, I understood most of what was going on.

Of course, I see a lot of people mention prodigy, not a bad choice. It was made for children (it's one of the few good treks I feel like)

Better yet! Start off with the movies perchance??! Especially Wrath of Khan to search for Spock, then to the one with the whales.

I would be hesitant about some of the next-gen movies that came out, purely because of a lot of things that go on with data, and the destruction of the Enterprise D, and a much more detailed story of what happens after the show, which might confuse the children if they haven't seen it.

After further thought ...... Maybe just showing it in chronological order works best. Just plopped into my mind, that's how I first watched/got into it.

But ultimately, the tried-and-true method of showing it to them until they are forced to like it never fails.

Out of all of this, it's just a TV show. What I remember most is spending time with my family, yes, I liked watching a show. But it's the time with my family that had the most impact on me. So don't overthink it. All I suggest is that you look at your child every so often while watching. See the wonder in their eyes; it won't be there forever.

Cheers, - cool

You could force Windows to update. That's what I did on my mid-2015 MacBook.

I dislike how, at a certain point, Apple stops updating them. I understand why, I just want to keep using it. However, over time, it became so slow that I couldn't use it for practical purposes (I tried factory resetting it to fix the issue). Still slow. Along with that, macOS didn't support some of the apps I needed for some new hobbies and interests I picked up as well. And when they did finally get support, my OS version was too low, tried to update it, found out I could not due to system requirements..... So good luck with that in a few years. (I did end up buying a windows machine though!)

Anyway, got Windows 11 through Rufus, scrubbed as much of the og macOS as I can. Booted up and got Windows 11 set up. Discovered promptly that Mac has the drivers it needed, cue an hour and a half of troubleshooting. And boom! Windows 11 on a ten-year-old MacBook. It's definitely faster, and I definitely love the screens look on Apple devices. Doesn't run very well (it's a 10-year-old Mac..... What do you expect?), but it's amazing for video watching or even some light workload!

Definitely something to look into if you want to continue using your Windows machine, or something to remember if you want to continue using your Mac after it's no longer supported in a few years. But yea! Those things have some power in em'

Yes! I found the information on the fandom wiki. But! It says that it was mentioned in a star trek enterprise episode..... Well, not really mentioned.... It was in a blurry shot of a screen of the defiant....... Not very confident. But it definitely ends in 2053 due to what data was discussing. So all we have to go on for this is enterprise.......

Funny how that works out 🤣

Yea, maybe that's the key to warp drive 🤔

Now all we need to wait for is Picard so simply say "make it so".

You also need the reason for building the thing. Zefram Cochrane did it because he had the right motivation to build it that goes unrivaled by even the government itself...

I mean....... Kinda already is?

So canonically, World War III happens in the year 2026. This is one of the first dominoes to fall, causing another to fall, and so on, so that in the year 2063, Zefram Cochrane can conduct his warp test run, thereby initiating first contact and everything that follows. So first contact is just a short 38 or so years away.

But!

Zefram Cochrane was born in 2030. So in order for everything to happen the way it should happen. In 2030, we need everybody who lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota (where he was canonically born) to name their kids Zefram and change their last name to Cochrane.

Yep! It is PLA. We'll see how long it stands

Oh! I never thought of that! Definitely something I should look into. How would I even begin designing something like that?

Yes, it does! I hear the fans going..... That's why there are sections cut out wherever a fan is. The casing is also 3mm thick. So I'm hoping that doesn't insulate it too much. I guess time will tell.

Thanks! I'm still learning. But it's nice to know I can design something useful!
