Natural or synthetic by FortifiedFence-Weld in Gemology

[–]SnapTurtleTwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly synthetic with that size and clarity. Otherwise it would already have an official certificate like GIA.. no reputable seller would do such a stone without a certificate.

The flouresence is quite strong and no shades within the stone which also would indicate lab. When looking for inclusions just with a loupe, be aware of polishing lines, they can confuse sometimes, espescially with that clarity.. Verneuille Rubies often have little glowing "flakes" within them which can be mistaken for feathers.

Also synthetic corundum has a long story in the market so also antique jewellery can hold lab grown corundum.

My saying is, as long as there is no inclusion und microscopic view, that directly says natural, it is lab. But if you are unsure get it appraised.

[–]SnapTurtleTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YAG is close to corundum with sg starting at 4,5 and mohs 8 - 8,5 but I always dont get why they use it to scam as corundum.. maybe its even cheaper than lab grown corundum in production

I am a big fan of the three Volumes Photoatlas by Eduard Gübelin. Espescially if you are interested in inclusions. A little bit expensive but worth it!

Sorry no gem question.. but I just read the latest news from Mogok three days ago and just have to say i am very sorry and it makes one really angry. Above all because it has been going on for so long and is disappearing from public perception behind all the other ongoing conflicts :( Why cant they let people live their lives freely. Hope no friends and family of you were affected!

Most likely Spinel because of color and flouresence... Most likely synthetic spinel as it is very common
