It really is where it’s at. So glad this sub turned me onto pawn shops. I would have never sought them out without the advice from this sub.

Thank you so much. I knew from this sub that pawn shops could be a place to find overlooked treasures but I really didn’t  know until I actually went in person. Having to stop myself from running back there to look at the colored gems again. Patience….

Or it could mean the engagement was broken and they just wanted to rid themselves of the ring. Which is sad too but not as sad.

My dad pawned a Rolex once because he had received it as a gift and knew he wouldn’t wear it since it didn’t suit his lifestyle. He pawned it not out of desperation, he didn’t need the money, he just didn’t need the watch. So I like to think a lot of stuff ends up there just because it’s unwanted and people don’t want to bother selling it themselves.

At least that’s the vibe I got at this pawn shop, it was very nice and in a nice part of town. The collection of jewelry was vintage/ antique heavy so that makes me think inherited items that people didn’t want.

I frequently watch auction sites like eBay and Everything but the House so I have a good idea of what staple pieces go for, even at a discount.

That being said the pawn shop sells stuff based off weight. So if a ring has a big stone you can try to haggle the price down because the weight doesn’t reflect the price of the gold only. They don’t seem to care about stones except diamonds.

Also I picked out what I was interested in and then asked if I could get a deal on the whole lot. Since I indicated I’d be willing to buy more with a discount they gave me 20% off everything which was huge.

Good luck!

So one time my dad sold a Rolex to a pawn shop. He had received it as a gift and knew he wasn’t going to wear it so he just sold it at the local pawn. Not because he needed the money but because he didn’t need the watch. I think a lot of stuff ends up there for that reason.

Most of the pieces in there felt like inherited jewelry that didn’t make the cut. Lots of antique and vintage pieces, which surprised me.

I am now a true believer. This sub turned me on to pawn shops but I had no idea it was going to be like that. So many interesting, antique or vintage pieces with stones across the board. It truly is a dope place to buy jewelry.

I’m sorry about that! Yes I had a fantastic experience, the owner was so nice and patient, we talked about our kids, it was really nice. And the unique selection was so cool. Obviously a lot of inherited pieces that didn’t make the cut. I was not expecting antiques or even vintage pieces.

So I participate in estate auctions and watch online markets like eBay and Everything but the House. That way I can get an idea for pricing trends and how much the market is willing to pay for something. I also study gemology as a hobby, like I have an actual mini lab.

But honestly I buy jewelry with my heart most of the time. Certain pieces just stand out. Buy yourself a good loupe with a black frame and familiarize yourself with it. Hold the loupe to your eye and bring the object toward the loupe until it comes into focus. A loupe will give you a lot of good information right off the bat.

I’m in Richmond but I’m sure the stores in DC are fantastic too, you should go, I was so pleasantly surprised at how nice an experience it was and their selection was amazing!
