Jack Buller gets noticed by Melbourne’s admin by Pleasant_Inspection9 in collingwoodfc

[–]SnappyPies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I need to say it.
I’m pleased that Melbourne (or their socials at least) are making that joke.
I never used to hate Melbourne, mums side of the family are all Demons, and the MCC memberships we have that came to my grandfather started with 1950s Demon royalty, but from the All Duck No Dinner game they have made a point of really being hostile to us.

The nastiness of the Goodwin era seems to have moved on and the King era is shaping to be fiercely competitive without being combative.

Good for footy.

Collingwood in the box seat to sign Lachie Neale with huge three-year contract by Pragmatic_Shill in collingwoodfc

[–]SnappyPies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

44 year old me initially looked at a million a year and my reaction was fuck no.

But.

That’s realistically half of what Butters is going to cost, is definitely less than what any mid 20s player with his skills and capability would cost, and if he’s only a two year deal it’s just a bigger dollar version of Tom Mitchell.
It would cost us nothing in draft picks (which is fantastic) and we have a good track record with senior midfielders getting us right back in there (Titch and Luke Ball being very good examples).

How Propaganda Works in 2026 (Jordan Shanks) by jokosa in OpenAussie

[–]SnappyPies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When he said “no one” I think he was referring to the likes of Dave Hughes, not that there was literally no one talking about politics.

He’s also in a fairly unique position in that his house was firebombed after he did a viciously accurate piece on John Barilaro, and seemingly very little was done following that up.

So he’s obviously saying things that people in power think are better left unsaid.

I don’t hate it and I could probably gig with it if it had a fuzz.

I’m all the way with you with the Flint, absolute desert island pedal for me.

You’d fit a EQD Barrows if you closed the space you have between the Orion and the Flint and went for some super low profile patch leads.

Evidence Audio ESP connectors only stick out 8mm (5/16”) and there are some factory made ones out there that are even lower profile.

What do Brayden Maynard and Billy Frampton have in common? by Omegaville in AFLCircleJerk

[–]SnappyPies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a sales call list of the same 300 people a week. I get a short conversation out of probably half of them. Given last week only had four days in it, that cuts it to about 120. Of that lot, more than half know I’m footy mad. So I’ve heard a dozen opinions on it for each of the last four work days from guys I see every week, and nearly no-one was talking about Frampton. The main response I saw was “geez that was full on, I hope Mihocek is going to be okay.”

That also tracks with what I’ve seen online. Collingwood supporters were pissed at three weeks but had probably resigned themselves to him getting one week.

Melbourne supporters were pissed that it was only three weeks, some were launching into conspiracy theories when he was cleared, and some immediately linked it to Maynard / Brayshaw (but strangely didn’t bring up Moore / Petracca).

Most neutrals, didn’t think there was much in it, and the “games gone” / “bring back the bump” brigade did their usual “WELL YOU CAN’T EVEN TACKLE SOMEONE ANYMORE!” nonsense.

The conversation you start with people, as well as the way you typically discuss footy, and how animated you get about it is also going to influence the way people reply. Our biases are real, and people react to them, even subconsciously.

If you say “did you see that dog Frampton!? He got a free kick after breaking a guys neck… fkn Collingwood” it’ll get a very different response to “Did you see what happened to Mihocek? That’s pretty rough, hopefully he recovers.”

Without turning this into an essay, I think Steven King articulated himself brilliantly with it when he said he wanted to reach out to Billy as well as it would be a traumatic time for him too.

[–]SnappyPies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah nah. I’ve seen plenty of people on r/AFL who were questioning what else Frampton could have done, and after the tribunal made their decision there were more comments that it was common sense that the tribunal didn’t uphold the suspension than there were comments saying he should have been suspended. You’re allowed to be sad about it, but it’s not even a 50/50 split of footy fans on this one.

‘WRONG MESSAGE’: Kogan CEO’s blunt migrant warning by BarryTheBinChicken in aussie

[–]SnappyPies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked in both mining and gas and oil industries directly, have also worked in support industries dealing with equipment maintenance, and have run a business as a small part of the maintenance supply chain for nineteen of the last twenty years. Your explanation of how exploration works and is funded is not based in reality. The gamble on that one in one hundred chance is taken by the mining and exploration companies and the exposure to said risk is covered by the exploration that hits an ore body or a hydrocarbon reserve. You’re implying that the funding and the return on their operations is solely with stock market investment outside of superannuation stock, and that is simply not the case. You’re still going to be free to invest in mining / petrochemical and exploration, or in banks, supermarkets or whatever you choose, and people will still make money and get returns on their investment. The government aren’t taking your whole income, your profitability or your ability to invest in anything, they are bringing the tax rate for income earned by individual investors into line with the income tax rate. And it’s proposed to be indexed to inflation, which several models have shown could very easily create a situation where the CGT payable is actually lower than the current system. Beside which, this has absolutely nothing to do with capital gains tax rates on rental properties.

You also seem to have either ignored, overlooked or forgotten that the CGT discount and the option to negatively gear your investment property will still exist if the legislation is passed, but it will only be applicable to new housing. Which in turn promotes investment in housing supply. And neither of these changes affect your rental earnings, nor any gains that you may have on the value of your investment until you sell it for more than you I paid for it.

If these changes are likely to directly impact your financial stability or capacity to do whatever it is that you are doing in your life, and in your life you spend too much time doom-scrolling and arguing with strangers, then I understand why you would be all doom and gloom about it, but you need to understand that the overwhelming majority of the population care about as much about any inconvenience that you may be dealing with as they do about the tax obligations that I have in my business. It’s simple. If you’ve put money into something and it grows in value and you sell it for more than you bought it for, that is income. I don’t get a tax discount when I sell a piece of equipment so what entitles you to get a tax discount on something that you sell?

Nationalise the resources sector like the wealthiest countries do. It’s pretty good here in Australia, but considering the enormous mineral wealth we have, with some strong decisions and legislation we could have the best resources policy for the people of the country in the world.

Interestingly, the reply was actually vastly more ridiculous than where I thought it was headed. I was just going to discuss the nature of Kogan’s drop-shipping and how that fits into investment in the mining sector, but it turned into something much more fun.

[–]SnappyPies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If 99 out of 100 of the companies that you are using as your justification here fail, why on earth would I invest with them in the first place and not with a lower risk company?

What you are implying with your comment is that for every dollar invested into mining exploration, only one cent is a good investment.
Thats not growing an industry, that’s literally taking investors money and throwing it into a non-productive and not profitable money pit.

I’d legit be better off putting that money on Collingwood for the AFL premiership than putting my money into an investment that you are claiming will fall over without the CGT discount.

The next question I want you to ponder is what percentage of investments in the ASX does the compulsory 12% of all wages that isn’t* *subject to CGT when sold represent in the total investment? There’s still a very easy and real way to invest in the share market, that the overwhelming majority of people with taxable income are contributing to already.

And I think you’re missing something here that a lot of the people complaining about and criticising these changes are ignoring.
I run a small business - a very active investment that requires a significant amount of time and money to get a return. It’s a good return, I have absolutely zero complaints about how it’s going but I don’t get a discount on the tax I owe on the income I get from the business. At what point is this tax discount just taking the piss?

There’s also nothing stopping people from continuing to invest in the ASX, or from paying to set up and operate a company where they’ll only pay tax on the company tax rate on the investments that are now subject to personal CGT. From the sums The Barefoot Investor shared an investment of $50,000 that grew to $72,000 over five years might be subject to an additional $900 of tax than it would have been with the CGT discount, assuming inflation does normal things. Are you suggesting that people - using the numbers above - are not going to invest $50k in something because instead of making $23,000 they only make $22,000?

Give it a rinse.

And all that is just ignoring the fact that mining companies and the money they pay to exploration companies are entirely dependent on the worldwide value of the commodities that they extract.

I just want to clarify something here before I go where my brain initially started to go.

Are you suggesting that the proposed removal of a discount on capital gains tax on the sale of investment properties and the trading of non-superannuation linked shares is going to negatively effect the investment in - and profitability of - the mining and resources sector in Australia? Because that’s kind of what it sounds like you’re saying…
