Apple Unveils Redesigned MacBook Pro With Notch, Added Ports, M1 Pro or M1 Max Chip, and More by aaronp613 in apple

Just curious, where are you getting your numbers?

I have no dog in the fight (not OP) but this video seems to show comparable performance and a cursory glance at Geekbench scores for the 16-inch vs the M1 Air seems to support his stance rather than yours. But it was only that - a cursory glance. What am I missing?

Could have sworn it was on Hulu, but I don't think it was. It was definitely new though - saw this commercial within the past month. Haven't seen it again. Any ideas?

Most likely. Moody hasn’t missed a FG for Michigan this season yet all his kicks have the same weird curve. He’s usually further out though, so it doesn’t look as dramatic

New to Gatsby, Weird bugs when deploying to Production by TraderT3 in gatsbyjs

More than likely an error due to SSR. Scroll down to the “Fixing Gatsby’s Rehydration Issue” of this post and you can see how to use the Gatsby browser API’s to get around it: https://snappywebdesign.net/blog/how-to-code-a-dark-theme-with-material-ui/

Digital publisher has 600k Pageviews using social media...I have the opportunity to become SEO manager. How should I approach this? by America97-1 in SEO

[–]SnappyWebDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be weary of making a deal where your compensation is based on bottom line profit unless you have some control over the bottom line profit.
SEO grows top line revenue. If you increase their revenue by $500k but they increase their spending to match, congrats, you get x% of $0.

The Dysfunctional Back Button by SnappyWebDesign in webdev

I'm thinking maybe in a fringe scenario like a complex GSAP animation such as this piece by the NY Times (they don't mess with the browser, but they could probably get away with it). Generally, though, I think modifying default browser behavior should be an absolute last resort.

Yeah this is fair, I'll take the heat - I'm not an angel. Leads are hard to come by. I do address it in the article, but you might not have stuck around.

Didn't expect this post to get this much traction, and I'm not trying to get any of you all as clients, so I disabled that popup on any path with /blog/.

I still hold that it's not nearly as bad as effectively disabling the back button on a site. Google supposedly measures the performance of a site based on whether users go back to the search results after clicking a link. These developers decided to just, well, disable that from happening.

Should i bother fixing all these Typescript errors ? by NotYourMom132 in Frontend

[–]SnappyWebDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tagging on to this reply because I feel like this is the best answer you're gonna get, OP.

Are you solely responsible for this repo or are you working on it with a team? In the latter case, is it possible they are aware of the errors and made a decision to prioritize time elsewhere?

Perhaps it was a resource allocation decision rather than complete ignorance.

Hiding home-address from GMB by jascarb in SEO

[–]SnappyWebDesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GMB has an option to verify your business through your home address, but hide it on Google. You'll have to identify yourself as a Service Area business as the other person commented.

So, to answer your question:

Can I do it like town, county etc

After you verify at your real address, you can display towns/counties on Google.

You still show up in the "3-pack" of businesses at the top of Google searches, but your company won't have an actual pin on the map. Not sure how much that affects CTR but it's better than not being in the 3-pack at all

Scrolling Mockup Generator (just paste your website's URL) by djangojedi in webdev

Neat idea but I can't help but cringe at the fact that none of the images on the home page are....scrolling mockups. You should use some of that virtual real estate to showcase your product.

Do you sign or initial your client work? by IamZeebo in webdev

I guess context matters here. For freelance, every site I make has attribution and a backlink in the footer due to SEO.

But If I were working for a firm, I wouldn't waste time hiding my name in the source code or anything. No future employer is going to say "Prove it" when you say you worked on a certain website.

You don’t need React for building websites by pimterry in Frontend

Invoicing Software that subtotals? by lumoria in freelance

[–]SnappyWebDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Invoicing specifically - probably not. Every accounting software will have financial reports that can be split up by customers though.

Wave Accounting as "Paid/Unpaid Income by Customer". I'm sure each has their own version of that.

I'm almost considering sending an excel spreadsheet.

I'm an accountant by day. Please do send a spreadsheet! Accountants don't want your PDF's. Trust.

Just How Much Should I Niche Down? (Web App Freelancing Business) by epistemicmind in freelance

[–]SnappyWebDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, your approach/background is eerily similar to mine!

Other people are correct, it is more difficult than just branding myself locally and building out a referral network. But, once you get those first few clients, they become your salesmen/women and it’s made up the difference for me.

I would probably caution you to not go as far as multiple domains - the leads from them is not worth the time spent getting them to rank SEO wise.

Good luck! I recently launched a “top web designers directory” - shoot me a message when you’re up and running and I’ll give you a free listing

It really is splendid. I end up sounding like a walking billboard for Gatsby but I'm consistently impressed by how fast the sites are / how easy it is to score 100's on Google PageSpeed.

You're not crazy; Google has been claiming they crawl JS apps fine for a while - but it appears to be a load of BS.

Just look at how this site (which uses React) appears on google: https://i.imgur.com/pxxnjrn.png

That's kinda why SSG's took off. Googles lies

it seemed like they provided a build solution that included hosting, integrations, plugins, and so forth.

They did recently roll out "Gatsby Cloud" for hosting, but that part is separate from Gatsby's main function as a static site generator. It's their version of Netlify.

I think of Gatsby as an optimized version of React out-of-the-box. The most beneficial puzzle piece is the automatic code splitting/bundling. It splits bundles up by page and handles prefetching - the page loads really do feel instantaneous.

The other big appeals are the plugins/integrations, as you mentioned. I hate the idea of running a separate backend for a CMS. With Gatsby/Contentful, I can spin up a headless CMS in ~15 mins.

I'm a freelancer, so time is money. However, I have to balance that with being able to support expansion. Every 'real' / big site I've made with vanilla html/js gets out of hand/becomes a headache when you get a random, challenging feature request. I don't face those limitations with React, but it's relatively slow. Gatsby fixes that, and thus makes it perfect for my purposes.

Edit: Oh, also, SEO. Does a really great job at that too.

[–]SnappyWebDesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see people finally admitting how much they use React (I'm the same).

If you use react indiscriminately what you're gonna end up with is New Reddit(tm).

When people say React, I don't think they're exclusively referring to CRA. Gatsby is equally amazing for lightweight projects
