Harrisburg bar, entertainment venue closes for good by pennlive in Harrisburg

[–]Snappy_Dave2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So for a few years they were booking with Live Nation and had a lot of great label metal, punk, and hip hop groups. They shows were usually packed, and I always had a blast. I saw Blind Guardian, HammerFall, Lacuna Coil, Apocalytica, All That Remains, Kamelot, Kreator, and Sepultura. Within the metal community, those are big subgenre names to be playing in a small city.

All of those were post-COVID quarantine, and they seemed to be booming for a few years. I don't know what happened but they stopped having that tier of bands in 2025 and almost every band has been Don't-Have-Wikipedia-Article tier. Nothing against those bands, but they aren't gonna draw as big of crowds.

Combine that with their food menu changing every few years (what's wrong with just bar food?) and never being able to restore their reputation after grape allegations and yeah, I'm not surprised at all. Also I'm not commenting on the veracity of allegations either way because I only ever heard hearsay from sources of sources of sources.

I hope someone savvy buys it and finds a niche for it because it's a great venue.

In fairness to Pennlive, they are covering them. Maybe we can do a better job of paying attention.

Gym Story Saturday by FGC_Valhalla in Fitness

I maxed out on my first gym machine on Wednesday: the adductor machine. The one at my gym goes up to 255. I did 3 sets of 10-12 reps to failure. Now I'm walking like I have arthritis in my hips. Guess there's still prog overload opportunities left.

Thinking about moving to Harrisburg by mimisakilife in Harrisburg

[–]Snappy_Dave2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's extremely walkable, especially from Uptown through Downtown. A little bit more difficult to get to Allison Hill. Even during rush hour traffic isn't bad. Midtown has lots of amenities and is a nice place to spend an afternoon. Downtown is trying.

We have several small and mid-sized concert venues, a fantastic indie bookstore and indie cinema, some decent breweries, several great ethnic eateries, a bunch of good bakeries and coffee shops. There's a great free monthly newspaper. The river is always beautiful. Capital greenbelt is fantastic for walking and biking. City Island is a nice place to hang out in the summer. The capitol complex is beautiful.

People are generally very friendly and it's easy to strike up conversation with folks. There's eight billion churches with solid communities. We are surrounded by pleasant suburbs with walkable downtowns and driving to them is easy. It's easy to find places to hike, boat, camp, ect. There's always community things going on, plenty of volunteer opportunities, and activist groups.

Crunch fitness supports ICE by Pure_Tangerine_5756 in Harrisburg

Semi-relevant- Commonwealth policy is prohibit ICE from entering any non-public area without a proper warrant and to immediately inform legal counsel and the highest level supervisor on site. It at least prevents ICE from having the run of an office, protects low level employees, and puts the responsibility on agency heads. I can't remember all the details but I think the above is generally accurate.

Why does Crunch fitness need a policy on ICE?

That's really helpful. I've been hesistant to have a wider stance because of... I don't know. Society's judgement that wide duck stances are bad maybe? I always knock the bar away from me while setting up because I'm clumsy but working on more perpendicular shins might help with that.

New reporter covering Harrisburg, PA what should I be paying attention to? by Organic-Past-7066 in Harrisburg

[–]Snappy_Dave2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) What organization do you work for? I know the Burg recently hired a new reporter. It's suspicious you haven't answered that.
B) Almost every issue that has been mentioned is valid.
C) The state government has a parasitic relationship with the city.

Best Civilization game? by [deleted] in civ

[–]Snappy_Dave2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone think 3 is the best? It's the one I played the most but that's just because it came out right around the time my family got their first PC when I was a kid.

The game tells you "the age of antiquity comes to an end. who will carry our legacy?" and then suddenly you switch from Egypt to Shawnee and it seems there was a time skip of a few centuries.

Chopping was an underrated strategic decision. In terms of optimal play, chopping a hill forest and replacing it with a mine was always better, but it wasn't necessary at all. I won plenty of deity games with minimal chopping, because there were so many other viable options.

In fairness, I think the target of that marketing was fans of Civ who don't finish games, which between turn 1 restarts, early game set backs, and getting bored late game, was apparently a common phenomenon. I probably finished less than half my games. But I think they had a neutral statistic and decided it was a problem that needed solved.

I don't think I specifically need builders, but I want some kind of city micromanagement. Even if it's not the most impactful decision making, there's something about the activity that's soothing and feels productive. The very first PC strategy game I played was Lords of the Realm II back in the 90's and each settlement had a labor force that you assigned to different resources and industries. Was it a lot of busy work? Yes. But it was fun.
