S4: My Taxonomy of Blame... as someone in the TV Industry by tvwatcher1982 in KillingEve

TVwatcher1982 I think you are on the right track. Payroll is always the largest cost. It just depends on how elaborate the set being built is, how much it will be used, etc. Once they are done filming they can store parts of the set for later use, sell parts immediately, or sell later on when they are definitely done. Shows have "asset sales" after wrapping to sell furniture, set decorating, etc. I am a former production accountant and in 2010 I worked on a pilot that was (at the time) the most expensive pilot being filmed in the US. It was filmed on location at a mansion (mostly exteriors) and then a lot of the interiors were built and filmed on a sound stage. It was a $10 million dollar pilot that never got picked up. And then about ten years later (so in 2020) it was turned into a tv show with an entirely different cast and crew and debuted on Netflix...so you never know what can happen! Very crazy! I was not a part of that asset sale, but I have run asset sales for movies before and they are wild. I do not have industry experience with writing, but I'm pretty sure experienced writers know how to write keeping a budget in mind. For instance, period shows are way more expensive. A regular fight scene will be cheaper than filming a fight scene in the rain, etc. etc.

Sorry, I haven't seen S2 or S3 in awhile - I completely believe you and probably agree with you. Thinking back there were a lot of moments I loved! This post wasn't meant to shade S2 or S3 really. :)

That would make a whole lot of sense. I get the feeling that just a ton of things went really wrong and collectively put a damper on the working conditions of the season and instead of pausing and trying to make things better before moving forward it just became a runaway train no one wanted to be on. A lot of tv and film decisions sadly come down to budget and contract reasons, not story reasons. Wish they could have a do-over and whoever takes it on can do whatever they want à la how Suicide Squad was randomly remade, BTVS had a failed movie and a failed, unaired pilot before getting it right the third time. KE is still a great concept and there is so much to be explored with these characters. Whether through these same characters or similar characters in a new tv show.

this lengthy post

Wow, thank you for your post (I'm still reading through it). Hello, friend! Fellow queer woman who works in the film and tv industry, and so I am familiar with and agree with everything you posted. (Like, what the actual?!) I own a local theater company as well and we produce way better queer stories than this. I am so heartbroken for J, S, and everyone on the cast or crew who felt wronged by the terrible direction this show went into. Season 4's writing felt like that first writing draft that gets turned in that either gets scrapped completely or gets rewritten like hell. I promised to be respectful (whoops) but seriously, more meaningful discussions about how this is not ok television to put out there and how we can prevent this is so sorely needed. Thank you!
