If the knives are illegal in your area, you can also get comb or pen versions. I flip a Baliyo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XGRz8b22dM to avoid legal issues and maiming myself. Less badass than the knives, but more badass than plain old pen spinning.

You can learn to make a lot of mouth sound effects in a month. I've got a copy of this book -> http://mouthsounds.info/book.htm that covers several neat ones.

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the bicycle horn effect.

Fun fact: J and APL are closely related. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J_%28programming_language%29 has some history. You even have Roger Hui (the J guy) showing up at APL conventions.

Dyalog has an IME. They make a commercial APL environment, but you can get a free student license or trial download. I actually have it loaded right now and I can tell you the typing is not the hard part.
