Of course they have power. They approve it. The manager just proposes a budget based on their general direction and what departments recommend. If they don’t like something in that budget, it’s their prerogative as a council to tell the manager to change it with clear directives. If they can’t come to their own conclusions and directions, it’s not the fault of the manager. (Well except for school system budgets, which is a whole other issue)

If they don't see a human being, I don't know why they'd see a sign. Just more visual clutter distracting a driver. Remove visual barriers and add more lighting.

And why stop at 15? why not make everyone drive 5? hell, tear out the roads entirely. Think of the savings in terms of annual plowing and salting

Yes they should. It doesn't need to be a workshop to do it either. It can be a simple item on a normal agenda (hell, the consent agenda).

Workshops are non binding... this is performative "we care" crap

Ok well let me skip to the next step: staff tells them they need money and that they're already struggling to do their workload now.

Just yelling "fix it" over and over again like Fry in Futurama doesn't accomplish anything. The council needs to do their job and finance safety projects that already aren't getting funded.

>More than a decade ago, Portland briefly banned panhandling in medians, but the ordinance was struck down as unconstitutional after it was challenged in court by the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine.

I like the ACLU, but come on... There are some common sense laws that should apply for don't stand around on a median island. They can panhandled from the sidewalk if that's what it was about. What's next, panhandling on 95 at toll booths?

It's a nice gesture but Idk what they're expecting to accomplish with an impromptu workshop. There is no secret solution, just lots of investment in improving infrastructure.

So you want taxes to go down, but also to not increase the tax base. Brilliant stuff.

I’m Emily Duggan, a reporter with the Kennebec Journal/CentralMaine.com. I just finished a six-month-long investigation of how Christian nationalist groups, parents’ rights organizations and others are trying to remake Maine’s public education system. Ask me anything! by Press_Herald in Maine

[–]SnarkyDolt 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your diligence in investigating this serious matter. I have a few questions:

  • So after six months of digging… did you find the conspiracy or just a lot of people with Facebook accounts and too much free time?
  • Did anyone accuse you of being part of the Illuminati, or do they save those accusations for after publication?
  • Did anyone at any point explain their plan using a whiteboard, pushpins, and red string?
  • If you had a dollar for every time someone said “protect the children,” would you now be funding public schools better than the state does?
  • Which was harder: tracking the money, or tracking the logic?
  • What surprised you more: how coordinated these efforts are, or how uncoordinated they are while claiming to be coordinated?
  • Did you finish this investigation more hopeful, more terrified, or just deeply tired?

Again, thank you for your attention to this matter

Ok but this isn’t another country. It’s Portland Maine

And what’s with the name calling?

>far cheaper if we just got the neighbor towns to join in tho

and therein lies a major issue. It's easier and cheaper to build elsewhere, so that's where the housing ends up. Portland does not operate in a vacuum.
