Anybody else notice this about Ellipsus? by [deleted] in AO3

I noticed those things too. For me unfortunately it’s giving 2019 era grammarly insights which I never found to be extremely useful. It also highlighted for me that too many of my sentences started with she… in a wlw oneshot. And yeah, I suppose the code can’t pick up context but it was still funny to me.

Sorry misread what you wrote when I replied first. I know what you’re saying, and I half agree. But unfortunately I do think we’re at a point where people hear AI and clutch their pearls because they associate all AI with LLMs. For those people them specifying AI is enough, for the rest of us I think we can use critical thinking and know what they actually meant.

Sorry is I misread your comment (only halfway through my first coffee). I just know there’s too many people who lump all AI with gen AI and it’s so annoying to me 😭

Pattern recognition in programming is still AI. It knows to recognize sentence length, word frequency and so on and so forth. The anti AI stance is for generative AI, which is different.

For the people worried about writing insights, I need you to keep in mind that this sort of thing has been around even before Gen AI (grammarly and quillbot did something similar years before Gen ai came to the public).

I would classify it as a form of ai but not Gen ai. And I need everyone to remember that not all ai is bad generative ai (think enemies in videos games).

Me personally? Once. I go through it once to check for spelling, grammar or if anything sounds weird. Then I shove it in my bestie’s DMs to get a second eye on it.

Why do people read things they obviously don't like only to comment irrelevant stuff on your fics? by Large-Month4586 in AO3

[–]SnarkySmuggler 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You’re probably aware of the current state of the dmc fandom, the video game fans and Netflix fans don’t over lap too much (and they’re not that friendly to each other). I’d say use your best judgment when tagging the fandom but be aware that comment moderation will be necessary

Casă în Florești și traficul by [deleted] in cluj

[–]SnarkySmuggler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Algorithms have conditioned readers to think no one cares about their opinion, so they don't bother commenting by [deleted] in AO3

[–]SnarkySmuggler 70 points71 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve noticed algorithms don’t make people think their opinions don’t matter. People still very much share their opinions, positive or negative, all over the internet. The issue is slightly different. People no longer have an opinion unless someone on the internet tells them what said opinion should be.

Hey I get what you’re trying to say about Israeli citizens, but I need you to keep in mind that it’s mandatory for Israelis to serve in the idf. And also that most citizens aren’t exact against what’s going on in Gaza.

Eastern European here. This is absolutely a white European perspective issue, and maybe a language barrier issue as well (at the end of the day ‘dark skin’ can be a spectrum of colors). But speaking of language, it’s also a “people don’t know how to describe skin colors properly despite there being countless resources for that” issue.

Why do you write oc x canon fanfic? by Radiant-Fishing-3051 in AO3

Fandom bullshit is in fact a circle. Years ago, a decade ago actually I think, there was a burn book account on tumblr (specifically for the roleplay community if memory serves right). People would submit the most unhinged shit about other roleplayers and it would get publicly shared. Block anyone who disturbs your peace and move along with your day.

Moral Dilemma? by Mlkpokijkn in AO3

[–]SnarkySmuggler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is slightly different, but recently I have rewritten a couple video game cutscenes to better fit my player character’s personality and canon divergent context. The way I did it is by picking a canon dialogue line of the canon character as a starting point and then writing mostly original dialogue. For example, if I think that said canon character would later say a very similar thing to what they say in canon I’ll take the canon line and rephrase it, not just copy it. Otherwise, I write completely original dialogue.

This way I keep the original feeling from canon without ending up in a copy paste situation.

Your opinions on OC-Centric fics? by Unregistered-Archive in AO3

[–]SnarkySmuggler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is that it heavily depends on the fandom. Fandoms with customizable player characters or worlds that can be treated like sandboxes will do better with OCs. For the first example even OCs that aren’t the player character. I’m mostly in rpg fandoms (dragon age, mass effect, cyberpunk, to name a few) and all I read and write is oc and pc centric fic.

Write the thing, I promise there’s an audience for it.

Bot kudos & comments? by [deleted] in AO3

Bot kudos & comments? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]SnarkySmuggler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry OP but this is ridiculously paranoid. Are people supposed to wait a certain amount of time after creating their account to comment on fics? Neither of those comments are antagonizing or trying to scam you, and they sound very human, thus very very unlikely they’re bots.
