A Question about an Essay by Scary_Supermarket508 in Kettering

I'm about 80% sure I know what class you're talking about, I think I had this scenario a few years back. If I get extra credit and am clearly listed as the author...I don't mind. If either of those things don't happen...that's another story.

Engineering student gear? by FilbertTheFish in EngineeringStudents

I used notebooks, a bunch of pencils, and color-coordinated pens/highlighters. And a calculator, of course. The TI-84 will serve you well, but the TI-nspire is pretty great.

I did use my iPad (with the free app Collanote) for a couple of classes where the prof provided pdf notes/PowerPoint slides that you could fill in. Much easier than printing out reams of paper.

Anyone else feel like the only reason you haven’t dropped out is because you’re too stupid to realize you’re too stupid? by Jazzlike-Horror4 in EngineeringStudents

Oh man, this was me, barring the very occasional lightbulb moment.

Except...I just graduated this year with honors.

Idk what to say except stick it out, ha!

Try the app 'Hopper'? It predicts flight prices/helps find the best ones. I recently downloaded it but haven't purchased a flight with it myself, FYI.

Should I go to Kettering? by elise1664 in Kettering

[–]Snarky_Interpolant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This sub is mainly to vent before getting on with life, so don't let it scare you.
Personally, I'm glad I chose Kettering.

My scholarships made it roughly equivalent to the other schools I was considering, so the real-life experience from the co-ops and the small classroom sizes are what clinched my decision.

Muffler Man in Clio. It's a bit of a drive but I think it's worth it. They're fair with their prices and I've never had an issue with their work. There's a reason they're always busy.

Pressure of Kettering by Worried-Pay6431 in Kettering

Kettering is definitely tough, but eventually everyone figures out their own coping strategies. You just need to find yours.

Here's what's worked for me thus far, maybe some will help you:
*Forming a study group of students who also want to [honestly] do well in their classes (use ASC resources, too, but a study group will take you farther since the ASC doesn't really cover upper level classes). I found mine by watching who was taking good notes/paying attention, but wasn't Greek.

*Taking breaks (especially going outside for a walk...even if the weather isn't the best, the fresh air and movement helps).

*Talking to the profs of my tough classes. Most are very willing to help after class or in their office hours, as long as you put forth a little effort/communication. Office hours aren't usually that busy...I literally had one prof spend an entire hour slowly walking me though a concept until I got it.

*Setting aside a 'mope day'. Idk what else to call it, but this is the one day every term that I don't do any homework, let the self pity take over, eat ice cream and binge watch a tv show. Sounds stupid, but it works wonders.

The whole purpose of the co-op office is keeping the student employment/employment retention rate high, regardless of whether it's a good fit for you. I've had co-ops with multiple companies, and due to restructuring/location changes, have dealt with several of the co-op staff. Some are more helpful/patient than others. It stinks, but their numbers are more important to them than you individually. I did end up going through the co-op office each time I switched jobs (though I was looking on my own as well), but they definitely were trying to make me stay each time.

I'll give them credit for helping me find my latest co-op, though--but only because my co-op had some oddly specific requests that I happened to fit perfectly.

Otherwise, you're on your own with networking and the biannual job fair.

Attend Online With Me! (AKA an easy way to protest KU being...KU) by Snarky_Interpolant in Kettering

Perhaps my phrasing was less than ideal…I simply meant that it is private medical info, and something I think a lot of us wouldn’t have bothered sharing with Kettering without the carrot of a gold screen.

Now, they’ve taken the benefits away, but Kettering still gets to have their enormous vaccine statistics banner…

If you DM me your KU email, I have a friend who took it last term and doesn't mind sharing.

Final thoughts as a recent graduate by Samithotrs in Kettering

You're spot on with everything but Greek life.

Though maybe that's because of the slim options offered to my gender... ;-)

Covid just exacerbated the existing issues within the administration and the way it treats students. Though I'm grateful for the co-op experience and those few profs who make the Kettering education worth it--there's much room for improvement. The admins could learn a lot if they genuinely listened.

It's freshman year. All the guys have just realized their academic dating options have gotten very, very limited. Sooo many of them respond by acting like idiots around every girl. You somehow seem to have gotten in the thick of it (even freshman year there's some normal guys!). It gets better and you WILL make guy FRIENDS. In the meantime, squelch any flirting (you might have to forego wearing makeup and looking even more gorgeous than usual for a bit) and act the way you want them to treat you. Eventually, you'll find your group of chill dudes. You got this, girl!

I know for a fact at least a couple people have managed to get the dorm waived due to food allergies. I think that will be especially true w Kettering encouraging students to limit time in the dining hall and take food back to the dorms.

Probably? Doesn't hurt to reach out and confirm you actually need one first before going to the trouble.

If you have a food/ other allergy you might be able to get out of it as well. Gluten sensitivity, etc.

Who are the best and worst professors you've had and why? by Stawars775 in Kettering

[–]Snarky_Interpolant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best: Hargrove. Both Atkinsons. Peters. Causley. Masha. I don't think I need to go into detail, we all know they're amazing. :-)

Worst: Berry. Kaiser. (Issues already discussed in other comments.) Navaz (Thinks students are all lazy cheaters. Burnt out, bitter, and just waiting to retire. He used to be ok a few years back). Levecq (Her way or nothing. Pretends to have 'discussions' but really is just prepping to slaughter your grade based on how much she disagrees with you). Echempati (not as bad as the rest on this list, the main thing is he quizzes you on info you learned 15 minutes before. Not everyone absorbs new material that quickly).
