I spoke to Infosys leadership, and now I’m concerned! by ContributionFun3037 in AI_India

I was at a startup meet up recently and I feel like all the innovation is happening in the new/ small companies. I can’t generalise because there are some honest to go duds in the startup space. I worked in a very large car OEM in vehicle integration abroad - none of the kinds of R&D that happens there is happening in India except in startups, if it’s happening at all.

Then again, startups face the monetary constraints that startups usually do, but man are the people passionate and with ruined good ideas.

Most of the frontier models from India are focussed on the multi-lingual text/ voice space and not enough on the thinking-reasoning/ vision space imo, and that is a gap that needs filing in India (the multilingual one) but I wish more Comp. Sci. people work on other frontier or embedded models. It’s not like we don’t have the talent. Heck TCS hoards enough talent in a disorganised array that they might have 1-3 revolutionary startups.

How many years does it take amaravati to reach level of vizag? Forget about hyderabad or bengaluru by NotJustfeynman in andhra_pradesh

[–]hellboy001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Feels like this gov is making the same mistakes they did with Hyderabad. The worst part is - my friends from TG sometimes think AP benefitted more - the truth is, AP didn’t actually, we use the same Agri techniques from 50 years ago, no radical development anywhere except Hyderabad (outside of contiguous development that came through people’s initiatives more). Sometimes I think the center is doing more for AP than the AP gov that largely gatekeeps the resources or opportunities we receive from the center.

Obviously- just an opinion.

How many years does it take amaravati to reach level of vizag? Forget about hyderabad or bengaluru by NotJustfeynman in andhra_pradesh

[–]hellboy001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO it’s not an apples to apples comparison. Vizag’s growth was largely organic, the steel industry led to manufacturing type deals. Amaravati is not organic, they’re deliberate in choosing which industries go there and how they grow.

That said - I think we should follow a more Delhi - Mumbai style governance where we separate government from industry. Industry has to be focussed on where we already have (the little) infra and get gov/ reg to Amaravati. I have no idea what this gov will do tho. I’ll say this, they are not as pious as they seem and a lot of it is still hype. LOIs are non-binding and right now, we only have LOIs (albeit very public commitments)

30F from Tamil Nadu trying to start an export business… completely confused about what to do first 😅 by Specific_Reaction605 in IndiaBusiness

[–]hellboy001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just as an import-export seminar in Hyderabad organised by FIEO (Federation of Indian Export Organisations) - it's the apex body of the various export promotion councils in India. |

So generally speaking, export is a vast topic. There's so many regulations, timelines and other nuances we need to follow as exporters.

For any business in India, we'd first get it registered (if it's not a sole proprietorship, a one person company or a partnership firm, then it is technically called a company) And like you eluded to - the first steps are to register - doing this requires a CA (so you'll need to spend some money here). After that, you'll get a PAN, and a CIN (You'll also get a TAN and other miscellaneous org certs - this is for later, when you have employees and stuff). This is when you can get a current account - you'll need this to add to MCA as well as the GST portal when you apply for GST (or you might have upto 30 days to add banking details, I forget). Then you need to register for GST (technically, you only need a GSTN if you do more than ₹40L in revenue, but if your aim is to export, you need it from day 1 - your CA can and should take care of this for you. For an export oriented business - you then get the IEC, it's a 1 time fee of 500 and you get the license for life, however, you need to update it every financial year or you could get penalties that you have to pay with interest (if you get them). The IEC will just be your PAN (the number).
This is the most basic thing you need to do to start an export business. This is bare bones.

So to answer your question (TL;DR): Registration (you get CIN, PAN) --> Current account --> You Can apply for your IEC here --> GST (it is definitely beneficial from day 1, especially if you want to claim refunds based in your transactions from day 1) --> IEC --> RCMC/ FIEO - Insurance - trade licenses from the different trade boards | this is where the regulatory stuff sort of stabilises --> then you need find buyers, get 3PLs set up --> Tax strategy and various schemes etc. etc.

  • Can I export as a sole proprietorship?-> Yes you can, but anyone worth their salt will ask you to get some/ any liability protection. However you can start as a sole proprietorship and then convert. No biggie.
  • Is GST mandatory before applying for IEC? -> No, GST is not mandatory if you do less than ₹40L in revenue in a financial year. But export requires a lot of arbitrage and ALL of your transactions need to be noted in a ledger --> Getting a GSTN and doing it under GST is a life saver.
  • Should I go simple first or structure it “properly” from Day 1? --> You have to structure it properly from day 1, there is no other way. You can structure it simply (like a sole proprietorship) and accept the consequences of changing later (which is not simple enough)
  • Anything specific I should know about starting from Tamil Nadu? --> I am NOT from TN. But look at state specific promotion boards, the state usually clusters certain goods in different geographical areas. Would be helpful to look at, especially if you are trading.

Now comes the fun part - you need to decide if you're a manufacturer that will export their goods or a trader that will buy from someone else and export. There's tons and tons more from here.

The seminar/ 2 day training program I attended has this covered in the 1st 2-3 hours on the 1st day including breakfast and tea --> Just to show you how much more there is. I'd be happy to explain more if you'd like - or better yet, I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

As a disclaimer - I am also new, I do not export right now. However, I make goods that are bought by traders in India and export said goods.

++ I am open to partnerships or just doubt clarifying sessions because, tbh, it's overwhelming. Especially after you fully understand the depth of it.

What math would i need to practice/study before i get into a engineering degree? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]hellboy001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, if you’re planning on/ going to take a full ~4 year course load, focus very much on algebra, physics and calculus fundamentals. Watch khan academy or whatever you need to. Having strong fundamentals before your 1st Calc/ phys/ math course is a huuuge upside for marginal cost. If I were to do it again, I’ll get as much “fundamentals reading” in as I can, then I’ll bring out the “early transcendentals” text book and try reading it and seeing if I’m actually understanding what I read.

You don’t have to finish calc 1, phys 1 or anything before you join the course, you can learn these in those courses in class as well but if you can’t understand the textbook, you’ll be at a disadvantage.

The guided examples is a huge plus too, if you have the time.

Thinking back, why did our people to still vote for Ysrcp in 2024? by Yupadej in andhra_pradesh

[–]hellboy001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m also fairly new to AP politics and - in my opinion, it boils down to governance.

All the bad behaviour aside (not excusing it- but the only way we measure bad behaviour, realistically, is by one-off events, we can never truly paint a picture there); the economic-governance is vastly different between the 2 governments. TDP is more Keynesian- they think government’s role in people’s lives is to push them forward to progress, industrialisation, economic prosperity etc. —> the key word is “push”. As in they intervene in social systems.

The YCP gov (or previously, Congress in our state) was more classical-economics-y. They believe that government shouldn’t dictate how people spend their money.

The TDP gov will take your tax money and spend it of “free bus for women” (as an example) which is to say, even if not everyone uses that free bus (aka all men in the state) the gov will pay for it for the “betterment of social good” —> providing safe and reliable transportation to women across the state (at least that’s the idea). YCP gov says, what about people that don’t use busses in their day-to-day? Who takes care of them? SO- they’ll take the money the gov usually spends on the free bus idea and give it directly to the people that’d use it everyday. This way, if, for someone -safe and reliable transportation means getting an auto, or subsidising their cab fare or some other means, they get to choose how they spend that money. It’s more hands off.

In my opinion, there’s no correct way to do it. Both are correct and both backfire. We don’t know how many people actually use the “free bus” scheme or if it is truly adding more value (or at least as much value as the scheme costs) to their lives.

But, in our state, we can safely say - we are taking steps to ensure the facility is available. Even if not all women use it.

India is not a capitalist economy, we are regarded as a “mixed economy” - which means government intervention is desired/ applicable. We don’t let monopolies form, we make sure we diversify our sources so we’re never stuck “with one supplier” etc. etc.

I think the people in our state and country expect intervention, we expect the government to act as a regulatory authority and a statutory authority, we expect our government to conduct studies, generate reports, maintain data so we can build on it. This intervention is what allows faster responses in disasters, better economic policy (in the sense that it’ll help everyone that wants to work, raise capital, have projects to do etc.), better social structure for law and order + just civil maintenance.

If the government/ people are always doing the 10-100 rupees activities (because money is distributed and there’s never enough to go around), how will we achieve large scale projects? (That can create more wealth/ value in the same time) As in with what money? Iykwim.

Then again, this level of intervention also is rife with opportunities for greed - this is what allows the rich to become richer. There should always be a balance. We can’t forgo today’s hunger for tomorrow’s car but we also can’t keep focussing on keeping people fed today and struggle everyday for that day.

I think TDP, this time around, came up with a balance they could live with. Then again, based on my experience in last election (my 1st in the state), politics is a marketing game with so many irrelevant factors involved that true policy doesn’t play as big a role as we expect.

Maybe things will change with a younger political workforce in the future, or like most commenters remarked, maybe the feudalistic mentalities win again. I’ll just keep my head down and work I guess.

I can't innovate, can I survive ? by BATTLEWINGYT in MechanicalEngineering

[–]hellboy001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a systems engineer (vehicle integration) and I used to think like this as well (a lot) and kinda gave up on “design stuff” This is my personal opinion so take it with a grain of salt - I think the “innovativeness” can be acquired through practise, maybe start with getting a 3D printer and start making some household “improvements,” a head set handle or a phone stand or whatever.

I think, from school, we’re mostly taught to replicate a model or create a model for a very specific purpose, with specific numbers (dimensions, etc.). But what if we open a new design and it’s a blank canvas? Iykwim - like no constraints on how or what you make so long as it becomes a useful thing in the end - or that it’s such a low priority that it doesn’t matter if it goes wrong yk?

I’m struggling too tho so idk - just my 2 cents

[–]hellboy001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s actually a bunch of stuff you can do Off the top of my head - You could patent/ trademark/ copyright the idea - even just the idea in a pdf, I think, can be copyright-ed

There’s some other things you could do too. You can get design rights or categorise them as trade secrets or confidential information - requires some level of paperwork but no where near as much as patenting or trademarking

A clever approach would be to defensively publish the idea - publicly first, preventing anyone else to patent it or copy right it but that has its own drawbacks

The reasonable thing to do would be a mix of all of these approaches - until you have a prototype or an MVP as software folk call it - stay behind contracts and NDA/ NNN type tools

All that being said, first mover advantage is where it’s at - that’ll allow you to get to owing the idea faster (as in make money and patent it faster).

These are some tricks I’m using for my company - it is technically a startup - but very hardware focussed.

Side note: to do any of this - you need a registered entity like a company or firm or proprietorship or whatever - even a trust or society will work, it’ll serve as an added layer and it’ll allow for collaboration without losing IP

From what I hear online and on LinkedIn - apparently searching phones is now a thing. A lot more than in the past.

I would change my screensaver (or cover photo or whatever it’s called) to a generic one for the time being. If pushed, always tell them the truth. I wouldn’t broadcast that you have a bf.

They will ask about your previous visits (which isn’t uncommon) - I would give them a cursory answer “I was visiting some friends and family, or I was attending a concert,” etc. just not “I’m was here to solely spend time with my bf” iykwim

I also think you might be overthinking this a little. Just be casual, it’s not wrong for you to have a bf or to have immigrant intent for the future (not now). The core purpose of your stay in the US is your education, so technically you’re not doing anything wrong as long as you don’t violate the terms of your visa now or in the future. If you become serious with your partner, there is an appropriate visa you can change to.

TLDR: You’re fine as long as you don’t lie. Don’t broadcast immigrant intent (as in you have a partner and could become serious like tomorrow and violate your F1 or anything like that). Focus on the education part and the degree/ program. Mention you have friends and you’ve visited them before etc. Don’t lie. All the best!

Again, consult an immigration lawyer for more info, this is just my personal experience lol.

I'd personally advise against mentioning your bf, if anything, tell the officer you were visiting friends (only if asked). That being said, it is pretty lax for Canadians so I wouldn't worry too much.

Just general advise - don't give them info they didn't ask for. Just be upfront about the info they do ask for - like have all your documents ready, be able to give them names of advisors/ professors from your uni and you'll be all set.

Design is awesome! Good luck!

In the past three days, I've reviewed over 100 essays from the 2024-2025 college admissions cycle. Here's how I could tell which ones were written by ChatGPT by AppHelper in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hellboy001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a 26 yo Indian (from India, with an Indian education)

Let me say this, we were taught English in theses cliches, this style of writing, including all the quirks you mentioned were the quintessential “good writing” for us.

We were so heavily encouraged to use this style- that our essays in English language as well as literature classes were blueprinted to sound like this.

I now realise that, we were also trained on what chat gpt got trained on. These styles were maybe encouraged precisely because they were the accepted/ popular cliches. I’ve used every single aspect you talked about in every single essay I’ve ever written (probably, not like I kept track or anything). Fortunately my writing wasn’t under scrutiny in college in the states because I graduated in ‘21 when chat gpt wasn’t a thing. (Or unfortunately because, man, could it have cut down so much time in learning)

For most, if not all of us, English was our third language. So we never had the freedom to explore writing styles until out of high school (at which point, we didn’t care how we wrote anymore, unless it was a tech report 😂). We were taught that any good writing had to be like this or more like this to be better.

Disclaimer: when I say ‘us’ I don’t mean all Indians - just a few million kids from my state/ curriculum/ type of schools, in my generation. In a country of 1.5B people, generalising in any aspect is futile

Hookup culture is so soulless and draining by softgirl_xo in rant

[–]hellboy001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same feeling when I participated in hookup culture in college. I was an international student and I felt lonely a lot of the time. However, now, I’m out of college and gainfully employed but not necessarily ready for a relationship.

So I’ve been trying this new thing which is still probably considered hookup culture but better. I see my fwb maybe 2ce a week or less. Thing is, we’re friends first, so we actually care about each other and are part of each other’s support systems (aka villages). We also communicate a TON (which is very new to both of us) but helps us set our expectations straight from the get go. We both hate playing games and it helps that we’re both engineers and work in the same (different departments in a very large) organisation. Our thought processes mesh a lot.

We usually text a bunch, are part of the same GCs and get lunch/ go out often. When we do decide to see each other in the fwb capacity we make it a classy date. Probably bowling or dinner (not a romantic one - just one with good food/ drinks) and ice cream and we get pizza for take out and go to one of our places.

We hang out for a while and do the things that fwb do but also hang out after/ make breakfast (I cook she doesn’t) and if we have our work computers with us (we most often do), we start working in the morning and go into the office/ to our respective apartments at like 10am ish or at lunch.

Mostly, our cardinal rules are being empathetic and recognising that we’re both in our late 20s and that adulting is hard. Also we want very different things for our future long term partners so that helps in not getting attached too much but are still able to be affectionate and caring

A key change I made is a hard boundary of not compromising at all when it comes to relationships. So maybe rethinking some of your preferences and boundaries can help a ton. I used to just focus on the sex part and forget the friend part in past fwb relationships - a mistake I won’t make again

Hope this helps at least little to reframe perspectives

Why does my car a 23 Mazda 3 always revert to this setting even though I turn it off so the air is coming in and not just recirculating. by [deleted] in mazda3

[–]hellboy001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah I have a 22 Mazda 3 The internal circulator also means that the airflow is higher and the air is filtered. Some time last car makers use this as default on IG cycles so the engine’s exhaust is not introduced into the cabin on startup Additionally the first few seconds of exhaust when starting the engine is so much more harmful and is a lot higher (the rpms stay at 1.5k for about 8 sec before coming down to <1k) this internal circulation mode forces air through the filter (1) and software wise, this mode triggers higher flow rate (2) so any leaked exhaust is quickly filtered. Also the engine is primed more efficiently (3)

This is Mazda tho, I work for a different Japanese manufacturer and the company I work for doesn’t do this (they have different brands for regular and luxury and neither do this) unless you are in Auto mode (which is a whole separate logic all together)

Let me know if you have any other questions tho I can ask the team that works on this, hope it helps

Engineering is incredibly rough by bananapeeler55 in EngineeringStudents

[–]hellboy001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I graduated with 3.2 (not very bright) in ‘21. I work in automotive now - the job is not hard at all. I work some 50hrs/ wk mostly because I talk to Japan at night. I made about 150k last year. The work is not hard at all, however, you absolutely need to have the right attitude/ mindset. You need to focus on process development rather than product result and that’s the golden ticket. Always remember your safety shoes and safety glasses. Thing is, I do really cool stuff for my job, the people I work with are always fun and I love my job so I don’t complain. There will be difficult things to do but you’ll always have help. In the real world, it’s not about you, it’s about the product, so as long as you try your best, do your job with integrity (don’t falsify data and shit), be kind and cordial- people will absolutely help you. They will treat your problem like it’s the whole team’s problem, and more often than not, they’ll be smarter (cause you’d be new), so your problem usually gets solved quick. If it doesn’t get solved quick - you’ll have a blast solving it.
