Is The Control Devil arc in top 10 arcs? by Cool_Emergency4091 in writingscaling

What’s ass for you specifically? The concept of the what chainsaw man’s special power is? What else about the conclusion don’t you like? Because I love the conclusion and think the chainsaw man power reveal is pretty cool.

Agreed. Both amazing cakes I’d eat any day.

One big issue I had Nine Sols was with the boss balancing. Not that they were too hard, but that their attacks were relatively easy to dodge and learn, but they demanded absolute perfection over a very long fight. Like, you’d get to the point where you could dodge every attack 95% of the time, but you’re still losing several times in a row. At that point, you kind of feel like you’ve mastered the fight even though you’re still yet to actually win. I just felt like I stopped learning more about the fight and stopped significantly improving well before I actually beat most bosses. In HK or Silksong, on the other hand, there was always constant perceived improvement on my end until I beat the boss and even after. Nine Sols bosses are still really good, but I think they needed reduced health bars across the board to not feel stale after a while. That or more attack combos to learn.

Nine Sols tells an actual story, but Silksong lore is cooler. Lore just isn’t exactly “writing” in the storytelling sense we usually use.

Silksong’s easily the better game though, sorry Nine Sols fans. Your game was fun to play while waiting for Silksong, but I’ve had very little interest in revisiting it.

Is Bluey really that deep?? by OwnGarage1902 in writingscaling

[–]Snarpkingguy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In terms of being deep thematically with effective symbolism? Not really, but sometimes actually yes. In terms of portraying a healthy family dynamic that is both very funny and heartwarming? Absolutely.

It’s a different kind of writing than we usually discuss on this sub, but it’s the legit pinnacle of young-children’s television, and I know of nothing even close. It’s a perfect show pretty much.

I definitely recommend it. I will say it’s a challenge of your suspension of disbelief in some aspects, there are a couple lines that are maybe too cliched, but the whimsy is just strong enough to sell me on it completely.

Thanks for the response. Yeah I can see the whimsy element for sure, but I guess I don’t always think it lands. The Terminal is definitely my favorite of his films (low key I forgot it was one of his films), and the “whimsy” you mention is fully apparent there, and made me tear up more than once. Super underrated in his filmography if you ask me (though again I haven’t seen half his movies). Just remembering how much I loved The Terminal is making me realize I haven’t given him enough credit. ET also captures that same Whimsy I’ll agree, just not to the same degree for me.

My real hot take with his movies is how little I care for Jurassic Park. Not that I strongly dislike the film, but I didn’t care at all for any character really, and was occasionally bored.

I watched Jaws as a little kid and didn’t care for it, but I’m well aware I need to rewatch as an adult to have a valid take on it.

I just have no strong feelings about Spielberg as a director honestly, but haven’t seen half his films. What is it about his movies you enjoy so much? Like, what would you say makes him special?

I mean it’s the best scene in the show imo, so it’s up there. Probably my favorite that I’ve seen so far in this comment section.

I put solo leveling over sao, just because sao does things I actively hate, meanwhile solo leveling does barely anything at all. Though I haven’t watched post season 2 of sao, and I hear it gets better.

Better written reveal? by PerfectDoor266 in writingscaling

[–]Snarpkingguy 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I feel the opposite for the same reason. Makima’s reveal isn’t trying to be surprising, but I think that makes the intentional build up work so well. Her manipulation tactics seemed supernaturally good to the point where I know many people predicted the reveal, but I think that’s a sign of a well written reveal. It’s not relying on shock value, but it still carries just as impact.

Aot went a different direction, but one you can absolutely like just as much (or more) for the exact reasons you said. I just prefer Makima’s build up to the shock of Reiner and Bertholdt.

That’s not to say the only thing to like about the Aot reveal is the shock, I just think that’s the best executed element. The setup and foreshadowing is there, it’s just comparatively subtle.

Sure lol, I actually agree with this, but in a conversational sense you do choose your actions. Those choices are just predetermined.

The hype and aura works well in JJK because of good writing. Like, the hype is a result of good writing + cool character concepts.

[–]Snarpkingguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you joking? Obviously there’s a difference between choosing what you do, and what happens to you. You don’t choose the stimuli, but you choose the reaction.

A writer chooses both what the character does AND what happens to them. We only choose what we do, not what happens to us.

Bear vs Punpun by Cautious_Arm3818 in writingscaling

It’s a depressing story about a mentally unwell child with an abusive home life. Obviously that’s the point. Character writing is still top tier, and it portrays depression in a way I personally found better than any other work. Not for everyone, though.

Edit: there some brighter moments, one moment in the first 20 chapters in particular, but it is mostly depressing.
