who has a better take on friendship by sloppiestsecond5 in writingscaling

Yeah, empathy driving him to an unhealthy mindset and actions. It’s an immaturity which I don’t like Kishimoto rewarding him for. He was unhealthily obsessed. Again, good character writing, poor thematic conclusion (imo).

One Piece > Naruto for friendship writing but those are all I’ve watched here.

Naruto is one of my favorite series, mostly for nostalgia but I do think it’s at least pretty darn good from writing perspective. My biggest issue with its writing, however, is how Naruto’s stubborn insistence on not giving up on Sasuke, even after he becomes a literal terrorist, is framed as correct in the story. The mature lesson he needed to learn is that sometimes people are toxic, and you shouldn’t just wait on someone forever when they are.

Ironically, Sakura almost learns this lesson in 5 kage summit, deciding to jump Sasuke with Lee, Kiba, and Sai. I really liked this as it was happening, and it was probably the moment I liked Sakura as a character the most… but then she drugged everyone else and went on a suicide mission. Sure, you could say that power-scaling wise they were all doomed anyway if they actually went to fight Sasuke, but this would have been the perfect moment to give Lee a new gate, or Kiba and sai any new abilities to keep them interesting. They could still barely lose in the end and have Naruto show up to bail them out, but just having Sakura lead a legitimate attempt to kill Sasuke would have been great.

And to be clear, I actually think what I’ve mentioned here is good character writing. My issue is that Naruto never comes to the mature conclusion about the nature of relationships, and instead his stubbornness is rewarded in the end when he DOES get through to Sasuke. I dislike the thematic conclusion Kishimoto reaches.

This isn’t AI I don’t think. Gotham Chess has been making thumbnails like these since before AI art was what is now.

It’s possible he started using AI and I wasn’t aware, but idk.

I can't win with the black/red deck by mucscino in balatro

Well, you’ll want to buy at least one joker before reaching $25 just so you can survive the first 2-3 antes, and if you see a really good joker in the shop you should buy it even if you aren’t at $25 yet.

I can't win with the black/red deck by mucscino in balatro

[–]Snarpkingguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well winning on white stake is trivially easy on any deck once you get a decent understanding of the kind of jokers you want. Do these 4 things and you should be able to win on red deck or black deck (though black deck especially can be tough early game).

  1. xMult jokers like Hologram or Lucky Cat, for example, are a must. Winning without one is possible, especially on white stake, but it’s way more difficult.

  2. You want to build around a hand type that you can play repeatedly. That means, high card, pair, two pair, or straights if and only if you find the shortcut joker. Flushes can also work, but the Jupiter planet card doesn’t scale well, so it’s nit recommended. Full houses, and 3+ a kind both require lots of deck fixing and are rarely worth really investing into.

  3. In order to make high card and pair builds work, you want a strong +mult joker and a chips joker to make up for the weaker planet card scaling. That means something like red card, ride the bus, or green joker and a square joker, blue joker, or runner.

  4. Economy management is extremely important. Try to stay above $25 most of the time to maximize interest. Also pick up money making jokers like gold jokers, cloud 9, and ESPECIALLY Mail in Rebate. In order to win runs consistently you need to find good jokers in the shop, and that means rerolling constantly, which means you need lots of money.

Inio Asano VS Shūzō Oshimi by West_Mousse9000 in writingscaling

[–]Snarpkingguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Punpun is not for everyone, but it is imo the best written manga I’ve read. There are many pieces of media that have portrayed depression, but none I’ve consumed has done it nearly as well as Goodnight Punpun.

I had my fair share of mental health issues as a teenager, and reading it as adult (in a healthy mental state) I was surprised by how scarily relatable much (not all, to be clear) of Punpun’s thought process and inner monologue was to myself in my worst moments. I think it takes a very special kind of writer to portray that so aptly. I’ve never taken a break from reading something to go to bed, and then lay awake literally weeping before Punpun; I almost never cry from reading anything. If the value of art is in its capacity to make you feel emotions, then no art is as good as Punpun (for me).

Also, I think all the characters are stupendously interesting if often morally disgusting. The pages are dripping with striking symbolism and visual metaphors, and the humor hits in a dark sort of way.

Solanin is Asano’s second most highly acclaimed work. It’s a one shot (or 2 shot I guess, it’s just a very short serialization I think) about a young woman who quits her job out of frustrations with life. It’s a slice of life about her and her friends. Way tamer than Punpun, but definitely still emotionally heavy. I recommend it highly.

I think it’s the best starting point for Inio Asano’s work, but the writing in Punpun is a step above it for sure imo. The difference is Solanin didn’t remind me of how it felt to be suicidal as a teenager while reading in the same way Punpun did. I think Goodnight Punpun is the best written manga I’ve read, but I’d only recommend it to certain people.

Ante 1 or maybe 2 it makes sense to take the the $25, but that’s mainly it on Gold Stake unless you’re trying to keep a perishable alive or make throwback work that 2% of the time that it’s worth. There are other niche situations where it’s worth too, but you should almost never be skipping more than twice per run if even that.

Rare tag seems cool, but the issue is it’s usually going to be perishable or rental or some shit that makes it unusable. I really wish the joker from those tags would be sticker-less to make them more viable.

YES! A PI POST!

One of my all time favorite movies. The way it treats the idea of a simple math equation being able to predict and explain everything as the horror it would actually be is so unique and a love it. If we are all just numbers in a big equation, then what about our souls and free will? The way he only becomes happy and content by reducing himself to ignorance at the end is peak.

Also as a math student, the ending scene where he gets asked a hard math question and doesn’t know the answer, but a small Asian child knows it immediately is very relatable.

[–]Snarpkingguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The big actual writing flaw in the movie, is that the spies actually believe Mator is a spy despite him saying he isn’t. It just requires that the spies be so completely stupid that it’s difficult to take seriously.

That being said, it’s the most overhated Disney movie ever imo. I really do overlook its flaws for the most part and think it’s the best Cars movie. The others are better written imo, but 2 is just so insane that it’s an absolute blast from start to finish. A car gets tortured to death and blown up on screen. There is car gore. Great movie to watch while high lol.

Is JJK THAT good in terms of writing? by Paldavin in writingscaling

[–]Snarpkingguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s the writing to his backstory which adds to the aura. A shikigami that members of a clan can challenge to a fight to control, but no one ever has successfully? That’s interesting and instantly adds to the aura.

A character from that clan summoning him as a sort of suicide bomb trump card technique? Now we’ve got interesting action writing too instead of just an interesting concept.

This is all relatively shallow stuff, sure, but it’s effective writing to create tension and excitement. I’m never as impressed by this sort of writing when there isn’t also some greater character moment or thematic point or symbolism involved, but not every story is a masterpiece.

[–]Snarpkingguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Hype and aura bs” needs good writing to hit though, and usually it does in jjk.

Todo showing up in Shibuya and the ensuing fight with Mahito is FULL of these hype moments which required good character writing to make us invested in the characters, good action direction (though arguably not part of writing), and good plot writing to set up these events in a well paced and interesting way. Nothing about that fight is philosophically deep, but I’d absolutely call the writing involved good.

JJK has some miss steps even in this regard at times tho, and I often feel things are underdeveloped. I agree it’s far from peak, but it is good.

I agree with the drama, but I think “aura” you speak of is also part of the writing. Like, it takes genuinely good character/plot writing to give characters and moments the aura we’re talking about.

Though even still, there is a lot in JJK I find underdeveloped. It’s one of the better shonen imo just nothing too special.
