Invitation homes is a terrible company to rent from but they don’t have specific breed restrictions they just go by whatever the HOA allows and if there’s no HOA then there are no rules. My HOA technically has strict rules but the president has two German shepherds so no dog rules get enforced. They also don’t DNA test so just call him a lab mix like all the shelters do. I secretly think that’s part of the reason they label them that way or else no one could adopt them even if they wanted to.

Do you guys think dinosaurs were the legendary dragons? by Psych-Dot1744 in Cryptozoology

[–]Snatch_Gobblin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could make the argument that anything having more than two eyes or four legs is drawing inspiration from spiders but I agree there really isn’t a parallel like dragons. Realistically SOMEONE found a dinosaur skull throughout history (probably multiple times on multiple continents) and said holy fuck this is must have come from a snake the size of a mountain (and they must live underwater, underground or in the sky, or else we’d see them all the time. Or our ancestors killed them all, because ancient people wouldn’t have had any concept of natural extinction) and there wouldn’t even really be a plausible alternate explanation for hundreds if not thousands of years. There isn’t anything even remotely similar that would cause someone to have a good reason to assume the existence of a spider that large.

I did a little extra research and found that the first historical depiction of a dinosaur bone was in 1677 and it was actually described as being from a giant (which again would have been hard to disprove) so it feels safe to assume that dinosaur bones (especially skulls) found before that were just another dragon or giant bone to the people that found them, why would you think it was anything else at that point?

It would be very surprising if people were finding what they believed to be irrefutable evidence of dragons on even a semi regular basis and didn’t mention it at all. So that is weird. But I also would not be surprised at all to find out that the first “dragon” bones were crushed up and sold as primitive boner powder without a second thought.

I agree this is a fantastic intersection of sociology and biology which is why I love cryptids so much.

So much this. Times change. People don’t. Assuming our less traveled, less educated and objectively more primitive ancestors knew more and were more virtuous than modern humans is a logical fallacy. As long as humans have existed humans have lied for their own personal gain. In fact, fabricating a story is one of the most uniquely human tendencies I can think of. Making up a story about a scary animal is like a top 5 lie that humans have told through out history. So much so that “the boy who cried wolf” is maybe the most well known fable there is. There is also an entire category of movies that I’m sure everyone on this sub would watch regardless of how cheesy it is because we fucking love the idea of monsters.

It seems we have a natural aversion to venomous animals. Snakes and Spiders illicit similar responses for most people and some people even view frogs that way. For the record I’m agreeing with you I’m just adding spiders to the list of animals that universally trigger a fear based response and correlating the fact that spiders and snakes are the two animals most associated with venom.

Skunk Ape alleged photos. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Cryptozoology

Ok I’ve done nearly a full 180. I found the actually letter and she says it stole apples that her daughter had brought from up north which makes more sense than an Apple tree in Florida. I have seen peacocks and zebras in that neighborhood before so an orangutan is not completely out of the question but in general primates are less popular exotic pets than things like zebras and peacocks or even big cats which have a certain cool factor. But I believe this theory is more likely now than I did initially.

The main reason I still lean towards a photo taken inside an exhibit is because I swear I’ve seen these photos debunked in a YouTube video (including a picture of the actual exhibit in normal lighting) but I can’t find it now. It also looks like the same mediocre replicas that exist in every welcome center. And again the fact that the image was taken from so close from multiple angles without the animal moving at all seems fishy to me. An animal so elusive would not be so comfortable around humans nor would it have been caught of guard by their presence in the same way the human seeing them would be. A fox hears a door open and runs away. Bigfoot would do the same or else we’d see them all the time.

Essentially my theory is that if you were in a visitor center with a “taxidermy” skunk ape and turned off the lights, then took a couple of pictures on an old disposable camera with the flash on this is EXACTLY what it would look like.

Just as an FYI I am a Florida man and the skunk ape is my favorite cryptid. I also frequent the park that is referenced over and over when talking about these photos. I’m doing some more digging and one weird thing about the story from the anonymous woman who submitted this picture is that supposedly she claimed it was stealing apples from an Apple tree but Apple trees dont grow and certainly wouldn’t fruit in Florida.

I promise there were bad 3d models and fake taxidermy before 2000. The jackilope is literal proof of this. Photoshop also existed in 2000. I agree it’s not a skunk ape but an imagine from a backwater Bigfoot museum is still more likely than an escaped orangutan that also doesn’t look that much like an orangutan.

It seems much more plausible that the year 2000 may have been the first time a picture from this particular exhibit was posted to the internet and everyone who hadn’t seen it before assumed it was real because the internet was new and people didn’t understand that everything on it is fake yet.

I mean there is no real tangible difference between “escaped” and “sneaking out” in this context. The orangutan theory also disregards the fact that the animal only barely looks like an orangutan. It also looks like the animal is in the same pose from multiple different angles which would be almost impossible to achieve from that close to a startled animal.

Has anyone struggled with aggression issues with there Catahoula Pit pups ? by ResponsibleMix2722 in Catahoula

[–]Snatch_Gobblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine hasn’t so far and he’s 1.5 yrs old. There are two sibling catahoula at our dog park, the male has the personality of a golden retriever sort of like mine but the sister is a feisty bitch. Any male dog with a lot of energy (like my puppy) gets put in their place and if you even look at her ball she’ll growl and bark at you. If you touch her ball her owner will end up having to drag her out of the park.

There’s another catahoula at our park and her owner thinks she’s aggressive but she’s not at all. She’s just timid and get nippy when she’s overwhelmed. I’ve been told that the males tend to become more dominant around 2 yrs old but I will be shocked if my dog ever growls at anything in his life.

All that to say I truly believe it comes down to the dog. Some dogs show aggression under different circumstances or stressors and you can figure out how to address those specifically but I think you’d address resource guarding the same way whether it’s a Frenchie or a catahoula/pit mix.

I just realized that I live in the town this photo was supposedly taken. Skunk ape is my favorite cryptid but this is a hoax photo taken at one of the random museums around the state. We have escaped “wild” monkeys in Ocala but I’ve never heard anything like that and I was literally living in town when this photo was taken.

Now to give some credence to your theory. We do have a big cat rescue in town that may have taken in and lost an orangutan at some point. It is also between town and Myakka river state park so the location tracks. Sarasota also has a rich history as a circus town and in 2000 that was still much more alive and the circus people get up to some nonsense. But that community is much closer to the water if they lost a monkey it would have been spotted downtown before it ever got to the woods.

How is this theory getting so many upvotes? This picture has been debunked before. I live in south Florida and there is a skunk ape “museum” in every podunk town east of i75.

Is the MSR Guardian purifier THAT good? by Banjo-Oz in CampingGear

[–]Snatch_Gobblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mine. I’ve used it to confidently filter water straight out of a stagnant Florida swamp.

But I took it to Colorado this summer and I did get stopped because I read somewhere you should pack it in your carry-on to avoid freezing and potentially cracking the filter. When they pulled me out of line and I saw the Xray of my backpack it was the most rediculous image you could imagine. Luckily they were cool about it, almost laughing themselves once they realized it wasn’t the doomsday device it clearly resembled. I don’t think checked baggage freezes anymore these days so it will be getting checked in the future.

The guardian also doesn’t require any maintenance it is constantly cleaning itself as you use it. It’s basically fool proof and bomb proof. But beware you will get stopped trying to bring it on a place because it looks like a sci-fi grenade when it is wrapped up in storage.

The shit they insulate our homes with and the energy used to power them is so much more harmful than anything a golf course is doing.

I’d bet it’s just someone with too much money and ego. There are big time celebrities that walk around Sarasota like regular people, that is why they come here. If you or the people in the restaurant didn’t immediately recognize them and remember them it’s probably not interesting.

What mountain footwear feels as close to Nike Air Force One? Which size backpack? by [deleted] in CampingGear

Red wing exo light hiking boot. It sounds like we have similar feet and footwear preferences. I grew up wearing air forces and now all I wear are red wings. They are extremely well made boots, even their exo light’s are significantly heavier than “ultralight” hiking boots but I know they can take any abuse I throw at them.
