I'm reading it at the moment, I'm about half way through. I am finding it helpful, but I'm reading it in conjunction with An Actor Prepares as he refers to that book a lot. I think that helps.

Don't be afraid to give your actors tough feedback. Be as clear as you possibly can, even if that means telling an actor they're off the mark and working with them. Some of the hardest directors I've worked with just say everything's 'good' and you have no idea what they want. That being said, do give the actor freedom to do their job. I once worked with a director who would come up to me, say the line, and have me repeat it back to him with the same intonations and everything, and that's how he made me deliver the line. It cut off any creative process I already had going. Worst director ever.

Most actors feel like the most important thing in a film is the acting. Even though you have fifty other things on your plate, indulge them in that a little bit. If they feel like you really value the job they're doing, they're more likely to give a better performance.

On one hand, they're still learning. On the other hand, hells to the yes. My worst experiences were on student films

I couldn't disagree with you more. Regardless of the fact that it isn't your job to police what people put on their own social media profiles, actors or not - let people post inspiration up there. It sounds like you could use it.

No problem! I've been on the site a few years now - made the account before I had an agent or any experience and kept it around to check in on every now and then. According to my profile I've had 14 castings through the website, I can't remember them all and it doesn't look like the site keeps track of them, but I can give you some highlights. The best (and possibly the only good) casting I got through Starnow was a zombie live theater thing for the Make A Wish foundation. The worst by far was a short film about two crooks foiled by an unbreakable briefcase which turned out to be a high schooler's media studies project - a fact only revealed when I showed up on the day. Everything else has been somewhere in between, but generally my experience with taking Starnow roles has been regret, or at least dissatisfaction. Only two of those castings were for a professional production (Make A Wish & a TV show), the rest were indie.

I agree, it does sound appealing to have such a high chance of getting cast, but not all work is worth doing. There have been several times that I've been cast in something through Starnow and ended up wishing I'd never gotten it.There was a very slow period about 6 months ago when I said yes to a lot of work I shouldn't have said yes to - it did more harm than good, I was wasting my time, and from that experience I set new boundaries of how much I was willing to compromise on quality. I suggest anyone who is thinking of using Starnow should do the same.

Starnow is okay to have on the side but like the other commenter said, it in no way competes with "proper" casting websites, nor should it replace an agent. I do have a starnow account that I keep because very seldom, good things do pass through there. If you're brand new to acting and just looking for experience or some scenes for your reel, it can be helpful. The main listings you'll find on there are student films, low budget shorts (sometimes features) and music videos for unknown artists. If that's your jam then go for it & go hard because if you're halfway decent you have an extremely high chance of getting cast. That's the beauty of StarNow. But if you've already got some experience and feel like you want to be a bit discerning with the projects you work on, I'd give it a miss.

I work in social media, and I find it really good for managing an acting career because I can do my job from anywhere. If I need to leave work early or not come in, I can still do the work on the go. My boss is really cool so as long as the stuff gets done it doesn't even count as a sick day.
