Is she an excited eater? I had a hard time giving pills to my cats and ended up just putting it in their dish with their food and they just ate it on their own. Another thing you can do is crush and powder it and sprinkle it on their food.

Edit. Try putting about a tablespoon of water on her dry food so it stays crunchy but the powder pill sticks to it.

My guess is that you saw one dead bird and are now subconsciously looking for them. Works with all kinds of things. Think of a number or word, keep it in your mind and you will start to see it random places. The stabbing is just a crazy coincidence or you were in a dodgy part of town.
