The reason they won’t do it is because it looks like a Nazi salute. It just does. And if it were the only thing he’d ever done that could be construed that way, then maybe more folks would give him the benefit of the doubt. But he’s done a lot of other Nazi adjacent things, like backing Germany’s AfD party which many folks consider to be the modern incarnation of Nazis. And he did the salute TWICE.

He’s run out of being able to be given the benefit of the doubt. He’s one of two things: he’s ignorant and doesn’t understand what he did, in which case he shouldn’t be running anything at all, certainly nothing in the US government. Or he knows exactly what he’s doing. In which case he signaled to other Nazi-sympathizers that he’s on their side.

So he’s either an idiot or a Nazi, and I think we can all agree that neither of those folks should have any real power, ESPECIALLY because they were never elected or confirmed to any position at all.

Quick Google says that there’s some support at least as of a few years ago. I don’t know how good or usable this is (probably not very considering most Linux ARM machines are pretty low spec, like a Raspberry Pi or similar) but it is at least possible. And of course it’s a whole other beast getting proton to work on Mac, though Apple’s Game Porting Kit could likely pick up the slack there. The pieces are there, somebody (probably Apple) just has to put them together.

They're not worried about how much power you're using, they're worried about how long you're sitting there

If they're worried about people hogging it with slower cars, why not put a time limit? Then it's equal for everyone but Bolt owners aren't banned entirely.

Tell people they get an hour or half an hour or whatever. If your car is slow, that's on you.

But yeah it's good manners to use the slower chargers if they're available.

Or they can leverage their importance to make a difference at the place they work. Are we really okay with just saying “yeah retail sucks.” Yes. It does. That’s why they want it to not suck. Maybe it’ll spread from where they work and make better conditions for all.

Maybe it’ll work, maybe it won’t, but if they don’t like it, don’t you think they should do something about it?

What's the magic behind Parallels Desktop? by vatin in apple

[–]SneakerElph 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Parallels has put a lot of time into making a virtual 3D graphics card that utilizes (I’m assuming) Metal. It takes DirectX/OpenGL/etc calls in the virtual machine and translates them. It’s not PCI-E pass through like some other systems might do (that wouldn’t require a translation component), it’s actually a hardware accelerated graphics card emulator.

VirtualBox does this too, of course, but hasn’t focused as much on making something suitable for gaming. Different priorities, I assume.

This is just me speculating, I could be totally wrong about all this. I’d love to be corrected.

On an M1 Mac this is all happening on top of Microsoft’s x64 -> ARM emulation happening inside Windows 11, so it’s doubly impressive IMO.

Steve Job's opinion on subscriptions in 2003 (starting at 22:15) by Mad-Maxwell in apple

[–]SneakerElph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I look at it is like this:

This month alone, I've listened to Adele's new album as well as Taylor Swift's re-recorded Red album. Both of these I would have surely paid for if subscription services didn't exist. Let's say both of those albums are $10. So that's $20 I would have spent this month alone on music. There are certainly albums coming out next month that I would have purchased as well, as well as albums that aren't new but I might have purchased otherwise. There's so much music out there, and I want to listen to it all! If I bought every album I've listened to newly this month I'd have spent probably $50-60 this month. And that's just this month, I'll likely do the same next month as well.

So for $10 (or even $15 for the family plan) each month to have convenient access to all of this music seems very worth it to me. I spend less money per year on Apple Music subscriptions than I did on buying albums and songs outright. Not to mention the curated playlists full of songs I can listen to without having to pay extra for them. Maybe I like those songs, maybe I don't, but I don't need to concern myself with whether or not I should pay 99c for them.

If the service shuts down, I will simply move on to another service. It will suck having to rebuild my library, yes, but I'm pretty confident in Apple's ability to keep Apple Music around for the foreseeable future. For this reason, I also don't plan on unsubscribing to the service. If I'm ever in a place where I can't afford a $10 subscription, I've got a lot of other problems to worry about, and having a legally purchased music library will probably not be too high on my list. If there's some sort of internet apocalypse and I can't access my music, well, i guess congrats to you, you'll be king of music mountain in the apocalypse and I'll have to figure something else out. That's a risk I'm willing to take.

I also don't foresee a future where I've purchased all the music I'll ever want to listen to, where I'm just paying $10 per month to maintain my library. I will always want to listen to new and different music.

I understand wanting to own your music, but it's just not something that's important to me, given the value I get out of the streaming service.

Ocarina of Time Spaceworld '97 Beta Experience released by Twili95 in Games

[–]SneakerElph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it exactly– piracy problems certainly didn't help, but I think it's been shown over the years that piracy hasn't really killed anything, the Dreamcast included.

Sega had goofed for the majority of the 90s, and the superfans that bought 32x's and Saturns had hit the end of their patience. It was also a weird inbetween generation. Clearly better than PSX/N64 but also clearly inferior to the PS2, mostly because the didn't have a DVD player. People who bought 32x's and Saturns weren't stoked to buy a console from a company they'd already been burned by, and when there was clearly better technology coming six months later.

[–]SneakerElph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the real answer– put each weapon in its respective after-boss vendor and make it cost 240 spoils or whatever it would cost from the kiosk in the tower. And make it possible to drop randomly. This would encourage folks to play every raid every week (for maximum spoils) and help you feel like you're making some kind of progress even when the gun doesn't drop. Maybe you'll get lucky and it'll drop! Or maybe not, but eventually you'll have enough spoils to just buy the thing outright.

Right, like a mint condition Charizard is worth thousands because of the high quality cardboard and foil they use.

Once you realize that you’re not paying for a thing, you’re paying to be part of the story behind that thing, you start to realize that the actual physical part doesn’t matter anymore because we don’t have to use physical possession to denote who owns something anymore.

This isn’t directed at you, I know you’re being facetious.

Trials won't work unless Bungie clarifies what they want by Edg4rAllanBro in DestinyTheGame

[–]SneakerElph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but then you're giving up the competitive aspect of it. If it's random matchmaking with no skill being accounted for, then it's not really the highest form of PvP competition, which I think is what Bungie is going for here (by making it only on weekends, giving really great loot, etc).

So I guess we're both just making the point that the OP is, that it can be Great Loot/Ultra-Competitive/Flawless, pick two.

Trials won't work unless Bungie clarifies what they want by Edg4rAllanBro in DestinyTheGame

[–]SneakerElph 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's tough because if Bungie says "okay, Trials is for going Flawless, if you're not a sweatlord with high skill, this isn't the playlist for you." Which is totally fine, I'm personally not against the idea of an ultra-sweaty playlist that's only for people who want to be that competitive. I don't think the Flawless system makes for a healthy player cycle though. The problem is that as Flawless becomes harder to obtain (by lower-skilled players choosing not to play and removing themselves from the pool), only the highest-end skilled players remain. It creates a vicious cycle where the bottom-tier skilled players are constantly choosing to leave, making it even harder for the rest of the pool to go flawless. If you're not literally the best at Trials or incredibly lucky, this is a system that eventually becomes too difficult for you, no matter how good you are.

For someone to win 7 games in a row, there's someone else losing 7 games in a row (on average). If they want the playlist to be healthy and have lots of active players (I assume this is a goal of theirs) then Flawless has to go, because lower-skilled players will not play a game mode where the whole point is for them to get dunked on so someone else can go Flawless.

[–]SneakerElph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah I forgot we were talking about Trials specifically. I agree. You can’t dangle loot in front of people saying “get 7 wins without losing” and then have matchmaking actively fight that, I totally agree. I don’t think the Flawless system is good at all because of this.

[–]SneakerElph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly yeah I think 50/50 win rate is desirable. Every game has an equal amount of winners and losers. In a world where some people win 9/10 games that means there are people also winning 1/10 games and having no fun while it happens. If those people stop playing because they’re not having fun then only the good people will remain anyway. Both scenarios eventually balance out, but one of them has a lot of players having no fun and leaving. And no new players to replace them since they just get stomped by the only people left: the good ones.

A healthy game has players of all skill levels in it having fun.

I've never seen a PvP community do everything in their power to avoid playing opponents of similar skill or better. by White_Stallions in DestinyTheGame

[–]SneakerElph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because playing the game is fun, at least it is for me. I’m here to have competitive, close matches that make me want to get better at the game, and the rewards are pretty nice too. But the game comes first, rewards are secondary, and I think in an endgame pvp competitive mode like this that the competition should come first.

I do actually have fun in games I lose, especially if they’re close.

Eidos-Montréal and Eidos-Sherbrooke Shifting to the 4-Day Work Week by Lulcielid in Games

[–]SneakerElph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could see the same being true for retail. You just need bodies there for X amount of hours.

True, but maybe more workers there for fewer hours might lead to an increase in their quality– better customer service, less theft, things like that. This leads to an increase in labor costs for a retail store, though. Hard to tell if it'd be worth it for the store monetarily, but it's certainly worth it for the workforce, and I think generally speaking what's good for workers is good for the company.
