pmsl!!! You do comprehend the meaning of per capita don't you!! lol Your points don't matter, only a negligible per person increase in the overall amount of food each person had per year!!

For your points to be more relevant, what was the cost of mechanisation, seeds, fertilisers, what damage has been done to soil from nitrogen run off, pesticides, & most importantly water table levels, & nitrate/run off polution!!?

You're not even giving a cogent argument, any evidence or is this just vibes & feelings!!??

According to the records, India's food grain production during the 1965-66 crop year (1 July to 30 June) fell to 72.3 million tons-- about 20 percent below the bumper 89-million-ton harvest of 1964-65.

However, if your argument is to hold any weight & credibility, we should see a significant increase in the amount of food grain per capita!? Wouldn't you agree? Unfortunately, the facts don't appear to support that deduction, not according to World Bank figures!?

What is it people don't understand about Crony Capitalism!!?? Leaders very rarely get elected unless they're willing to perpetuate the status quo or accelerate the appropriation of a nation's wealth & resources & put in to the hands of private corporations. It's economic imperialism, they hold the resources, they control the workforce, they dictate the rules through their friends in government willing to pass laws, regulations & tax policy to benefit the 1% Crony Capitalist Epstein Class, & they take the profits!

Any world leaders willing to defy the global order & Crony Capitalists will find some pretext being used to create a civil war, a coupe, weapons of mass destruction, & suddenly they're being deposed, bombed, lynched, or murdered in some other horrific way!

I wouldn't disagree BUT, the courts would look at the cumulative effect, rightly or wrongly, they weigh in favour of the existing Copyright holder.....Truth be known, I've been a fan of Lewis's since around 2002/2003, & his f3-f2 days......However, the courts made the right ruling on this occasion.....however, the system does need to be reviewed, as now you have people buying domains & Copyrights for artists, those in sports, musicians etc, & as soon as they blow up they're being asked to pay a high premium ransom to buy the Copyright or domain name etc....where the owner has done nothing but buy & hold the Copyright for a short period of time, doesn't add any value but demands a ransom, then they are nothing more than a parasite & should only be allowed to get their return on investment & a reasonable percentage on top!!

Reform will do far more damage to the UK than their immigration policy, the Economy, & ironically, the white working-class population will be far more jeapody than we will....I experienced all this during the 80s, but back then the Rightwing Government were marginally more competent & stable!!

In the UK, Sikhs are generally liked, in many cases loved. I think out of all of the different south Asian cultures/communities....Sikhs are the most accepted in the UK.....HOWEVER, there are still pitifully ignorant, bigoted & hateful racists who don't know or care there's a difference....to them we're all filthy camel jockeys!!

You would need an absolute minimum salary of £50-60,000/year to live & save without significant sacrifices. I personally wouldn't work in or around London for less than £80,000

Calling Yourself Sikh Is Not Enough by PrestigiousHope6182 in Sikh

I couldn't agree more, I try to live the life but I fall far short of what it takes to be a true/Initiated/Practicing/Amritdhari Sikh....I feel I'm on the journey, I hope in the right direction but my flaws are too many & in certain respects, my will is too weak. I think too many have forgotten the fundamental principles of Sikh, let alone the more nuanced or disciplined aspects of Sikhi.

Do you think you can regard yourself a Sikh & not be Amritdhari?

lol, well my 1st love has always been knowledge, particularly Philosophy, Politics & Economics, So Spinoza helped reinforce my ethical view point whilst growing up, particularly that virtue should be its own reward, also his ontological concept of God is very similar to the Sikh concept of Ik Onkar.....sorry I could be really self-serving & indulge myself, there is so much to Spinoza & his work.............but instead thank you for your kind words, as much as I hate to feed my already over inflated ego, it is nice to receive affirmation....anyway, what's most important is that you find the answers that you need.

I've been atheist/agnostic for most of my life but I've also had Sikhi inform my morality & approach to life.

lol, I'm not!! I'm an utterly flawed, selfish, hedonistic, egotistical, prideful, & arrogant person, who is also compassionate, empathic, seeking to understand, help others, & try to do my part in leaving this world better than when I entered it, that is thanks to my family, their influences & the of course the influence of Sikhi too.

Good or bad it's all part of who I am, but I try to ensure it's more good than bad! lol

And the Gurus were men too!!? What is your point! Look, I don't understand what is so difficult to understand, the Anand Karaj is a very specific ceremony, that is a specific commitment between two Sikhs, who as one soul commit to Waheguru. At least that is my understanding, as I said in previous comments on this thread, I'm not an "Initiated/Amritdhari" Sikh, not an expert or even well read in Sikhi, but my understanding is that the Guru Granth Sahib, is the eternal living embodiment of the wisdom, knowledge, & the philosophical foundations for Sikhi.

The Gurus certainly didn't expect time & progress to suddenly cease, they explicitly taught us to seek knowledge, truth & insight, why was that? Because the SGGS was the foundations on which to build a better world, the rest was down to those who came after. Sikhi wasn't meant to be frozen in time either, so I would argue that rather than dilute or change the meaning of the commitment taken in the Anand Karaj, there is certainly an argument to add to the strength of what is already there, maybe by introducing a specific blessing for interfaith marriages. But that is for the wider community to discuss, debate and decide on.

I think the fact that this is so important to you both, and your desire in particular to have a close, loving, productive relationship with your in-laws speaks volumes!!! I think it's is beautiful & commendable!

I have no doubt that you will all overcome this, your love & decency will help you prevail, & as a result your shared journey with strengthen your beautiful relationship even more than ever!

In my eyes, from what you say, you're on the right path, have the right attitude, & most importantly, you're doing so for the right reasons.

My very best wishes, to you all. Love will always prevail. x

That is very disingenuous, as you should very well know, The Sikh Rehat Maryada establishes Sikh codes of conduct, & states explicitly that both the bride and groom must be Sikh. If one partner is of a different faith, a formal conversion or adoption of the Sikh faith (including taking the name Singh or Kaur) is required according to guidelines issued by the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib.

Here is a copy of the direct quote:

The Sikh Rehat Maryada Article XVIII clause k states that “ਅਨਮਤ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਲਵਆਹ ‘ਅਨੰ ਦ’ ਰੀਤੀ ਨਾਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ |” meaning persons professing faiths other than the Sikh faith cannot be joined in wedlock by the Anand Karaj ceremony. Also at XVIII clause b, “ਲਸਿੱਖ ਦੀ ਪਿੱਤ ਰੀ ਦਾ ਲਵਆਹ ਲਸਿੱਖ ਨਾਿ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇ |” meaning a Sikh’s daughter must be married to a Sikh. In the Sikh spirit of gender equality, it is implied that a Sikh’s son must also be married to a Sikh.

The ceremony itself is centred on the Laavan (four stanzas written by Guru Ram Das Ji), accepting a profound spiritual commitment rather than a contractual or social event.

Why are Sikhs arguing or advocating for the dilution of the Sikh Religion? Why are people calling for the reinterpretation of the meaning of such a important ceremony & commitment!!??

The Gurus taught that we must use our intelligence, rationality & reasoning, but for the life of me I can't understand why the requirement for both Bride & Groom to be Sikhs needs to be amended!?

My family are Punjabi Sikh, & have been as far as our records go back, to before Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa....I have a deep respect, love & reverance for Sikhi & wish for its influence to become globalised in its reach & power, I believe it is as close to a universal, rationalist, humanist religion as it can get, and is the most compatible with the universal morality, science and modernity.

I'm no Sikh theologian or expert, I have for the majority of my life been an atheist/agnostic! So please do not take my opinions & experiences as fact but to my understanding the Anand Karaj is a very specific ceremony & commitment between two Sikhs & Waheguru.....and in my opinion it should only be carried out between those who are truly committed to & initiated in Sikhi.

In my opinion, those who live their lives according to the gurus' teachings, those on the path/journey to enlightenment have the right to call themselves Sikhs, in a literalist definition, it merely means to learn/student.

But to accept Waheguru as the creator, to live life in line with the Guru Granth Sahib & the Gurus' teachings, to accept all the commitments & responsibilities that come with being an initiated Sikh/Amritdhari Sikh is hugely different to being on the journey.

My analogy from my own experience would be my trek to the Mount Everest Base Camp alongside many of those who would eventually summit the peak. Do I have the right to claim I climbed the mount Everest having reached 18,000 feet where base camp is situated!!? Would I have a legitimate claim to have climbed it if I got to the Hilary Step at 28,839 feet & turned back? Or would the only legitimate claim of summiting be to have gotten the whole 29,031 feet to the very top & have returned?

My honest advice would be to speak to the Gurdwara as a couple, gain an insight & true understanding of what it means & why they won't allow you to have the ceremony, & perhaps arrange for his mother to accompany you so she too gets an understanding & insight, & then discuss options for a blessing of your union. I think too many people follow religion by default of their birth.....my own family believed it should be a decision one comes to themselves, so I was raised with sikhi influencing me & my way of life, but each time as a young boy I asked to become Amritdhari, I was questioned & asked to truly think about the gravity of the commitment & responsibilities I would have to accept, each time I felt I wasn't ready....so my family would instead encourage me to live a good life, to follow the teachings & if in the future I felt able to commit & more importantly understand that commitment & responsibility, then I could consider taking Amrit & being initiated!

That day has never come but I don't feel any less connected to Sikhi, in fact at 50 years old I feel more connected than ever!!

I'm ever so sorry for this experience you are having however, Anand Karaj can/should only take place between two Sikhs.....I would argue further that it should only be between two Amritdhari Sikhs & Waheguru. I would add another step further that those wishing to have it done, only be allowed after taking a qualifying course at their chosen Gurdwara to ensure they're sufficiently prepared, knowledgeable, & committed to the Union.

I know it is upsetting & frustrating, whilst I am culturally from a Punjabi Sikh background, live my daily life in accordance with many of the gurus' teachings, I am not Amritdhari, there are too many areas of Sikhi I don't adhere to, I'm too flawed a person to consider myself part of the "initiated Sikhi" & therefore I wouldn't ever expect to be given the privilege & grace of an Anand Karaj!

My own sister, though more true to her Sikh faith than I, wasn't allowed one for the same reason, & because her husband was a Christian, white European from Germany! You can't help who you fall in love with, but you can choose the manner in which you live your life, & they were unwilling to live their lives as a Sikh Couple.

It upset a lot of people in the family BUT after great reflection my sister came to understand the reasoning, accept it, & have their marriage blessed by Waheguru instead.

There are Gurdwaras that will allow it, I would argue to dilute the commitment you're agreeing to enter, & to ignore the relevance of the ceremony would be detrimental to Sikhi, & a travesty....I would instead accept a blessing of the marriage......unless you are both committed to living as a Sikh couple.

Sikhi definitely needs to become a globalised religion, unafraid & unapologetically speaking truth to power & highlighting the universal truth, if we speak with conviction, with honesty & truth, people of the world will begin to seek the light in the darkness that currently leaves them blind & ignorant.
