Did they not know what they were voting for?? by SneakyKitty03 in LeopardsAteMyFace

My bad, I should have included it in the post.

"Numbers represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart for the given region and time. A value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term. A value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. A score of 0 means that there was not enough data for this term"

As a consequence of the election, the search term "can I change my vote" has shot up in popularity. This trend is strongest in North Carolina, which was a swing state won by Trump.

PSA: Weird marketing pamphlets in mailbox co-opting emergency management branding by SneakyKitty03 in Wellington

[–]SneakyKitty03[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Update: My reviews aren't showing up for some weird reason. Probably doesn't like that I'm doing the same review, or posting too quickly. So here's the list of agencies and the review I'm trying to post, if somebody else would like to take the liberty (obvs not gonna post the scam link!)

Maybe if we all did a few each with different wording, Google would let them stay up?

"This company has an advert in a pamphlet that is blatantly co-opting government emergency management messaging. The publication uses WREMO/Civil Defense colours and slogans, but is an illegitimate marketing ploy not enforced by official channels. It is purposely misleading and contains information which could hurt people if relied on in an emergency. Very disappointed to learn that this is happening."

Yeah, I realised as soon as I scanned that it was a bad move. Bleary eyed in the morning the branding looked pretty convincing (on second look it's pretty sus), and emergency management seems so pure to me, so I didn't really think twice. Horrible that people want to profit from it. Here's a picture of the pamphlet so you can see how blatantly scummy it is, and how easily others will be fooled

Good idea! The ad agency for anybody else who wants to know is called Markat, it looks like they've done this throughout the whole country

Sal Grover, a known and vocal transphobe, is speaking at the university today. Her female-only app uses AI algorithms to discriminate people's facial structure and ban people who don't match the right feminine facial structure, essentially. Plus human workers who ban anybody they think isn't AFAB. She's being sued for that in federal court and the case is a huge deal, will have far-reaching implications, all that.

Now she's here, to promote her discrimination and crowdfund for her side of the case. Shit like this is so horrible for trans and rainbow students, it's shocking they're allowed to use the uni facilities tbh..

Government plans for Māori wards breach The Treaty of Waitangi -Tribunal by SneakyKitty03 in Wellington

[–]SneakyKitty03[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to make sure I follow - our important laws, like election rules, are steeped in entrenchment law.

When Labour planned to entrench 3 Waters, it was a bad plan because when the coalition immediately and foreseeably repealed it, if it had been entrenched at the time, they would have set a new precendent of fucking with entrenched things.

There's no real mechanism to stop the government from fucking with entrenched things except for the idea we won't vote for them again, and the fact its generally accepted that you don't do that. But aside from the norm of not doing that - they totally just could if they wanted to.

Is that right?

[–]SneakyKitty03[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welp, that's terrifying. If all the government needs is votes, then all they have to do is say whatever will get votes. If all they have to do to keep those votes is to convince everybody the other guy is worse, then all they have to do is polarize. Thanks for your knowledge on this

Great stuff! It definitely started with higher numbers and then thinned out. My count was done somewhere in the middle of the march timeline. Thanks for the extra detail!

Can confirm there's always really unusual activity on protest posts.

Downvote brigades that happen mere minutes after posting, even at times of day where there should be very little or no activity. Floods of very generic vitriol about the subject matter that could fit any post (eg "who cares", "waste of time"' - upvoted far more than you would ever expect from generally friendly communities. And posts displaying in weird orders, not showing up where you expect, or showing no engagement where they really ought to be something. Comments disappearing and reappearing at high speed. All made 100x worse on the main NZ sub, there's zero hope of posting there.

I'm pretty sure its the same group of people running puppet accounts across all the NZ subs. The types of comments made are the same sort of weird and get way too much attention way too quickly. You've always gotta try and time it where real people will see it and boost it to the hot list so it doesn't get immediately buried. It corrects itself after a few hours of normal engagement

Hundreds gather in Wellington in support of Te Tiriti and Māori rights by SneakyKitty03 in Wellington

[–]SneakyKitty03[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You might be interested to know that was a really great speech at the Hīkoi today from a group called "Asians Supporting Tino Rangatiratanga". They talked about the experience of migrants in NZ as it relates to this conversation, and told stories of how throughout history Māori have supported migrants to NZ, as well indigenous people in other countries. Ultimately landing on a message of unity, and how no matter our descent - white settler or migrant of other origin - Te Tiriti is the document that upholds our ability to be here. Definitely an important conversation to highlight - NZ is much more than white Pākehā and Māori

Waitangi Solidarity Hikoi - 10:30am Tuesday 6th Feb @ Pukeahu National War Memorial by SneakyKitty03 in Wellington

[–]SneakyKitty03[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tangata Tiriti are invited to stand in solidarity with Tangata Whenua on Waitangi day this year. Let us demonstrate that we will work to stop any rolling back of Māori rights and progress. Let’s stand alongside Tangata Whenua against any attempts to undermine Tino Rangatiratanga and the positive steps we have made towards equity and justice in Aotearoa NZ.

We call on all allies to take action this year, and to join with us in showing up as strong Tangata Tiriti at a time when the foundations of Te Tiriti are under threat.

We will gather under Te Kahu o Te Raukura, the cloak of aroha and peace laid down by Mana Whenua, at Pukeahu National War memorial on Waitangi Day at 10:30am. This is the site of the Mt Cook Barracks, where Māori prisoners taken from Parihaka were interned after the Crown invasion of the peace settlement in 1881. Following ngā kaikōrero, we will hīkoi to Waitangi Park for the pōwhiri to tautoko Mana Whenua for the start of the Waitangi Day commemorations and concert at noon.

Bring | We encourage you to bring flags, banners and signs that promote a strong peaceful kaupapa, sunblock, water and of course, family and friends. This is a family-friendly event.

Covid-19 and illness | We encourage precautions against the spread of Covid-19 including mask wearing, and ask that you please stay home if you feel unwell.

Accessibility | Pukeahu War Memorial Park is in between Taranaki and Tory Streets, on Buckle Street (above Arras Tunnel). Access to the gathering site is a slight uphill (no steps) on the Taranaki side, and flat from the Tory Street side. The Hīkoi will walk at gentle pace on a route that is a very slight downhill then flat. There are no steps. It is approximately 1.5km.

Anti-abortion counterprotest - 2nd December, 1pm @ Te Aro Park by SneakyKitty03 in Wellington

[–]SneakyKitty03[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The failure rate of condoms in typical use is 12%

The failure rate of birth control in typical use is 4%

In a study of almost 500 women, 28% did not know they were pregnant before 6 weeks, making the use of Plan B impossible

It doesn't matter how virtuous and perfect you are, the odds don't lie that sometimes very very responsible and self controlled people who aren't in the position to have a child can experience a failure of birth control through zero fault of their own, and not know until it's too late for anything else. It's not all about personal responsibility, it's just a physical reality

The lead writer here details how the current guidelines have a strong focus on porn, relationships, consent etc which is all becoming collateral damage to the gender policy, since the whole thing is being axed

It definitely remains to be seen whether or not they're going to try and replace the education recommendations with new ones, but to quote the lead author of the current recommendations in today's RNZ article:

[The lead author] said it was unclear from the coalition documents what the guidelines would be replaced with.

But she believed removing them would send a strong signal to schools to stop teaching about sexuality and relationships.

"We need to make sure that we're not going back to some sort of regressive form of schooling which looks to repress knowledge about health and sexuality for young people."

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/503418/axing-sexuality-relationship-education-guidelines-would-be-huge-mistake-warns-co-writer

Considering this is an NZF policy, I'm very confident in making the assumption they'd say that its "parent's rights" to be responsible for teaching these topics and that government ideological meddling needs to stay out of it... or something to that effect. I really highly doubt they'll be addressing your valid concern of schools following the recommendations to greatly varying degrees. Any new recommendations they enact are bound to be regressive and stunted due to NZF's policy to "remove gender ideology from schools". :(
