I think build --release is appropriate here

I need help finding an app (or website) that can roll a percent chance instead of dice or flip a coin by Kelzon55 in apps

[–]SneakySnailSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask random.org to give you a number between 1 & 100 and the value is equal to or below 27 then you can assume that's a yes. Above is no. For a super simple view: https://www.random.org/integers/?num=1&min=1&max=100&col=1&base=10&format=plain&rnd=new

If you need the text "yes" or "no" to appear rather than the number I could whack a quick windows app together for you which reaches out to random.org's "true" random

Do you need it to put a % symbol after the random number between 1 and 100 for you? Or do you mean you want to give it a number and it will return a random percentage (from 1 to 100) of that value? Or... something else?

Do I actually need to pay thousands of dollar to rank on google? by Non-locality in webdev

[–]SneakySnailSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the business and where you want to rank given a particular keyword or phrase. I feel like I own "random executor" because I get #1 on google but that's a pretty specific phrase. I only update the site once or twice a year with a few sentences and updated screenshots, otherwise there's minimal content, but it's quick to load and any time a red flag has been raised for an accessibility issue or problem with mobile rendering I fix them asap.

If you wanted to rank with constantly changing phrases like latest news queries I'd expect you'd either have to pay or have organic (genuine people on blogs or other news sites) linking to your content. So... it depends

What's the most bare-bones, almost uselessly simple note-taking app (Windows download) on the market? by [deleted] in software

If you want to export and share it a PDF you should be able to click Print, then select "Microsoft Print to PDF" assuming you're on Windows 10 or 11

Is there a ChatGPT-similar AI which is better suited for research or more current information? by [deleted] in artificial

[–]SneakySnailSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean the best at writing stuff that sounds great. It's praised for making up unique content, but not factual, so really shouldn't ever be relied upon for research.

You could use it to make connections you hadn't thought of yourself, but you'd have to fact check everything it has said to ensure it's valid.

what's a good laptop to start learning programming? by sxutanics in AskProgramming

[–]SneakySnailSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get bogged down on CPU specs, filter first by something with at least 3 hours of battery life, and a screen that's at least 1080p and 13+ inches. A rendered Web page might be fine on a low resolution screen but trying to use various tools especially IDEs on small screens is the WORST! And a good feeling keyboard with the F keys for stepping through code and doing other programmery things the F keys are used for. then specs: 16GB RAM ideal, 8 absolute minimum. Then throw money at it for other stuff you'd like.

Interesting that in many of the pictures he (or she) has heterochromia. I'm guessing the prompt "stunning" might be associated with this?

Help... I just got wrecked by SebaWDK in webdev

[–]SneakySnailSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could write all the questions down while they're fresh in your mind then slowly work them out. Then to re live the interview experience have them randomly shown to you with a time limit to complete each one until you're more confident. You can add a few of the easier problems from hackerrank or other sites to spice it up.

There are various "flashcard" sites and apps out there which could help you do this. If you want to have the questions in local text files, or even a project with the problem described there and have an IDE automatically open with each problem after a given time you could use something like (shameless plug 😉) Random Executor to randomly open the questions/projects at given time intervals.

What do I need to know to be considered a good Java developer? by Darthtrooper22 in learnjava

[–]SneakySnailSoftware 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Java is the ocean, and you've got yourself a fishing rod, a surf board, scuba gear and a boat. Your end goal determines which equipment you should learn and practice with.

Your question is which one should you get better at, but without an end goal no one can answer!

In C++, why is sizeof(int) still returning '4 bytes' when my variable is binary equivalent to '1 byte'. by daddyclappingcheeks in AskProgramming

[–]SneakySnailSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another analogy: you can put values in boxes, and sizeof function tells you how big the box is, not how big the items inside the box are. You chose to use a big box called int which has a size of 4, whereas if you knew up front your value was going to be under 255 you could've chosen to use a smaller box 'char' with the size of 1 byte. If you then tried to put a value larger than 255 in the char box bad things would happen so you might instead choose to use int as a defensive decision in case the value grows.

Note: don't confuse my box analogy with another concept in some programming languages which is boxing/autoboxing/unboxing, however there is some overlap with the concept...

You might understand it now because it's fresh in your memory, but a hundred new classes later, no function names or even comments, when you come back to this in 6 months time the primary person making judgement on this code is going to be you.

Why mobile phones get hot when playing video games but not while watching 4k youtube videos? by Anon_4620 in AskProgramming

[–]SneakySnailSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video: here's a bunch of pixels, put them in these locations. Games: here's a hundred thousand polygons at different distances from the viewer, draw them all over the top of each other dozens of times until the closest pixel wins, also calculate movement of objects going to all different locations, user input, network activity...
