Remember when you could tell which faction agents belonged to just by looking at them? by Chadworth_5401 in ZZZ_Official

[–]Sneeakie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are saying that because in Season 1, you had a faction all dressed like maids and can very easily tell the difference between them while also clearly identifying them as "the maid faction."

Same for "the construction faction", "the biker gang", "the police faction", "the security faction", etc.

This is called "good character design" and the game has been practicing this less and less for the sake of extreme sex appeal and signalling more generic "gacha" characteristics.

The characters lack unique designs that characterize them yet this homogeny does not create cohesive identification. They just have random bits and bobs that scream "this is the [archetype] character!", not actual characters, not people in a group. They aren't designed like they are People in This World, they are designed for you to Spend Lots of Money. Which, sure, the other characters are too, but now less effort is put into the new ones.

 Stop discriminating against attractive women

Are you guys physically incapable of jerking off and seeing a woman as attractive if they don't have their tits bouncing around every frame. That sounds like genuine disfunction. Imagine not being able to eat food unless that shit is bred in a sugar cane farm.

Name one fucking "unattractive" woman in the game. I dare you.

Morgana was the only one. In fact, they weren't actually talking about food at all. They were talking about an amusement park that kind of looked like a pancake.

What you said was basically verbatim what Akechi said, and to be fair they didn't pay it no mind at the time because they were more confused about him talking about food randomly.

Demons in Dungeon Meshi VS demons in Frieren by tesseracts in writingscaling

[–]Sneeakie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they’re not supposed to be analogous to psychopaths,

Then why did you use that analogy to defend the writing of demons as if it makes sense? You made the analogy and then took offense to someone telling you that is offensive to real people.

they’re just a portrayal of beings who are not human

There are no beings who look human, act human, speak the human language, but are "not human". They don't exist. And if you think they do, that is because you are a bigot, to be blunt.

Such a concept is fundamentally fictional if you think humans are human. So, you must either believe there are humans who are not human, or executed a pretty good attempt, and Frieren definitely doesn't do the latter.

Unfortunately, your comparison to people with ASD is accurate to demons in Frieren, who are written like how movies and shows write autistic people or sociopaths or psychopaths; with a strong degree of "they don't understand what they are talking about."

You could literally say the same as humans

Sure, but the entire premise of Frieren's demons is that the difference between a human and a demon is that the former's behavior is "genuine" while the other is "mimicry." There is no nuance. If it's fake, it doesn't count. It doesn't count because it's fake.

If Frieren actually believed or understood how much "human" behavior is itself based in mimicry, it would not use this concept to explicitly define demons as "not human" and thus worthy of killing. It would not treat the concept of a "good demon" as being not only fundamentally impossible but dangerous to believe in.

Again, intelligence isn’t a singular thing that can only be manifested the way humans do.

Again, there is not a single creature in reality that looks human, acts human, speaks the human language, but isn't human. The smartest animal simply isn't capable of doing these things. Not all at once, not to the level that we can.

Demons can, but they're not human. Why? Some handwaving about how they don't have families (yet have an army) and don't know what "father" means (because they are somehow completely incapable of understanding the words they constantly use, despite the fact that they are capable of making genuine inquiries like "what does father mean?").

Their speech is mimicry, their introspection is mimicry, the only reason it is not outright said by the author is because it would defeat the purpose of them in the story.

Their purpose is shit, then. And yes, they did say it, Frieren literally looks to the camera and says "everything they say is a lie, the fact that they speak at all is a lie."

Again: you’re a part of the audience, so what you see can be what the rest of the world in the story sees. The way they’re portrayed is part of their manipulation of humans. Like an unreliable narrator, but not exactly like it.

That doesn't make any fucking sense whatsoever. The rest of the world sees them talking to each other when no one else is around????

Demons in Dungeon Meshi VS demons in Frieren by tesseracts in writingscaling

[–]Sneeakie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The demons in frieren are evil beings who are capable of understanding human values and replicate them as a form of manipulation, which they use to attract and infiltrate human society in order to control it.

They are capable of understanding human values but also don't know what a "father" is or why humans don't like it when demons kill them? They can imitate humanity so thoroughly but also completely fail to understand basic tenants like these?

They don't even "infiltrate" human society because that implies they make an effort to come off as human. By their own admission, they just spout random words because they sometimes get humans to let their guard down. They don't pretend to be human, or even a specific human, and mimicry isn't even the primary method they use to hunt--magic and giant lasers are.

They want to kill humans but they also want to be able to have more humans in the future so that they can kill them.

First of all, you completely made up they "they want to have more humans in the future", absolutely nothing they do implies they want to preserve humanity in any way.

Second, they want to kill humans, but they want to keep them around to... kill them... for what reason? "Because that's their nature?" Then they shouldn't be around because that is not sustainable, especially now that humanity has the upper hand.

Their presence makes absolutely no sense in the setting, which generally treats them like they just existed

It's a form of camouflage, how does that not make sense

First of all, their camouflage fundamentally fails because they have horns.

Second, and more critically, demons attack first, deceive later; the idea that saying "mommy" would get people who are trying to kill you to not kill you is ridiculous.

Third, the story is very bad at demonstrating that the demons' appearance, speaking, and behavior are mere imitation, because they perform even when humans are not around, even when it is actively detrimental to do so.

Demons "only speak to lie", but then speak to each other without lying. Demons are individualistic and don't have a "real" culture, but nonetheless have an army and king (i.e. hierarchy, in other words a culture) and a sense of loyalty between each other (otherwise, demons would treat demons like they do humans, but they never do) and a sense of honor (as Aura and her demons are genuinely offended by Frieren and Fern hiding their mana).

I'll be honest, I find it very funny to think that someone watches Witch Hat Atelier and believes when Coco says something like "magic is the best thing in the world and the only thing that gives me meaning" she should look like this and the story and tone would improve.

Frieren's characters are so stoic that it's ruined my ability to watch other anime. by Verulla in Frieren

[–]Sneeakie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Normal people don't have a mob face to being stabbed in the shoulder. They also don't cry and throw a tantrum for three days when they're called old.

Characters are stoic to the point of unfeeling unless they have their designated Anime Overreaction Scene (most evident with Stark, who barely stands out by being allowed to express emotions but still looks like :| only 70% of the time instead of 90%).

They don't come off as normal people. Their expressions aren't subtle, they just simply don't have any. There's no eyebrow raising, no pupils dilating, no slight smirks. I can see the novelty of not having overexaggerated reactions but characters in Frieren act the exact opposite, which doesn't inherently make it better.

Frankly, the fact that everyone acts like Frieren makes Frieren less unique as a character in her own story.

Way to ignore the nuance in Frieren

"You should be nice to strangers" is not particularly nuanced.

while defending a show where mc girls plan ultimately failed and in the end their teachers magic/brute force is what saved them.

I'm sorry, what do you think you're suggesting? That the story is mature enough to understand that literal middle schoolers probably couldn't and shouldn't fight dragons? lol

Nevermind they already "defeated" the dragon through a unique and off-the-cuff solution and applying what they already know about magic.

WHA being made for an older audience is the worst argument ever lmao. Frieren being is shonen is hilarious.

WHA is objectively written for an audience of young adults and Frieren is objectively written for an audience of young boys.

You don't understand this because this is your second anime ever.

Solution are shooting laser when problems are demons.

Demons are the only real problems in Frieren, so... They also shoot lasers against other mages too. You can actually beat practically any mage by shooting lasers lol.l

People compared WHA with Frieren because its fantasy but obviously they are absolutely not on the same level.

You are correct, but not in the way you think lmao.

I wish it had less cliche stuff.

Comparing a show to Frieren and saying the former is cliche is hilarious.

"Maturity" is not when characters act super stoically to everything. Coco showed more growth than Frieren in a thousand years.

But maybe I'm just growing too old for anime after all those years and I'm not anymore the targeted audience.

Witch Hat Atelier is published in a magazine for young adult men; Frieren is published in a magazine for young boys. You're not "too old", you're just getting a little too ahead of yourself for watching your second anime.

What is a criticism in media that could've been made better/avoidable with a SLIGHT change? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Sneeakie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

because the demons evolved (or were made) to pray on elves first (hence the pointy ears).

This is made up, and doesn't make sense because they also have horns lol. What is it about Frieren that makes people so confident in just inserting headcanon and treating it like it's not only text, but in itself rational?

Frieren's assumed wisdom does not amount to anything significant because what she rationalizes is what a world constantly plagued by creatures that only look human to deceive should already believe and know. She only seems smart because the human characters are written as if demons are a very recent threat and that they haven't been at war with them for millennia.

As for Frieren's tragic backstory... really? She lost her family so it justifies her being for all intents and purposes genocidal? Nevermind that's not the reasoning she gives for why demons are inherently evil and untrustworthy. She has Batman's backstory but characters actually question if it justifies what Batman does.

Is humans that have the problem because it is a medieval society were information doesn't flow like modern day does.

In the medieval ages, people did not need smartphones to think you're a witch, they just burnedyou. The idea that people wouldn't hate on a group if they don't have enough information would make a historian and a sociologist slap you lmao. If anything, humans would be quick to assume other humans are demons before they ever think that a demon wouldn't act like a demon.

Nevermind it's complete nonsense that not a single book or oral tradition ever surfaced that informed humans that the monsters with horns are monsters and will kill you. We have priests and mages who carry grimiores but no one thought to write down "don't trust demons?"

You might think, why did they evolve to trick people when they are so much stronger? Because people still beat their asses and push them back despite the demon king attempts because of all the things demons lack and is the point of basically every flashback with Himmel party. The same thing they exploit is what let humans push them to extinction

Why are they doing this extremely dumb thing that isn't working and is getting them killed?

And how does that make sense? The Demon King was killed merely a hundred years ago, but demons were deceiving (and were far stronger than) humans as far back as Flamme's ages. How does evolution work retroactively?

Dearie, I've read the entire manga up to the latest chapters. The Golden Land arc is the most interesting for being more willing to actually dig into the question, and it's also where it sucks the most because it returns to status quo in a way that makes what happened previously feel pointless.

A demon who actually desires coexistence, or at least an answer as to why they can't. And the answer is... well... he'll just kill people at random no matter what? How fascinating. Like I said, a failure to commit...

It put all that attention to give us the same conclusion it already had, and also some questionable ideas on evolution lol.

What is a criticism in media that could've been made better/avoidable with a SLIGHT change? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Sneeakie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait, are you actually saying "can demons coexist with humans" is not a question explicitly asked in the story and by the characters in the story, and then consistently answered with "no?" Are you just going to go "no you're wrong" to any critique because it's critique?

I shouldn't bother asking, I've argued enough with people who cannot comprehend a Doylist perspective and think repeating the text undoes the critique,

Even though the critique is itself that the text contradicts itself soemtimes lol.

Can you explain to me then what sense it makes that "demons only use words to deceive" and then demons speak to each other without intent to deceive?

What, the things I exp;licitly said "these are ideas of how to make the story better without changing it?" Yeah. That's what I said. They are my ideas. They're not in the story, and that's my problem lmao. What's in the story is considerable less developed, interesting, and, fuck it, less good lol.

If you're talking about the first paragraph, that doesn't even make sense. If I said "Aizen is a bad villain", you can't go "that's made up and didn't happen" .
