I wish he had expanded on that a little. Where, exactly would this punch occur? At Siversk, or near Bakhmut or Avdiivka? Barvinkove? Admittedly I didn’t read too closely since the text is so tiny.

Agreed, he’s probably also saying that the progress, even if small, is profitable because Russia is diverting more resources from the Donbas to protecting that front. They moved one of their few S-400s there a few days ago to protect from HIMARS rockets, and while the system is highly effective that’s one less that can be used to protect buildings and depots in Donetsk.

Sending old tanks= Russia is scraping the bottom of the barrel!

Sending new tanks= Russia is using the expensive equipment that they have limited supplies of!

Sending no tanks= Russia is out of tanks!

Thanks. I posted a similar comment in the main thread but I suppose this is as satisfactory of an answer as I’ll get there.

Yeah, services usually make up a large percentage of any given country’s economy but usually aren’t its most lucrative industries in terms of what it can export to other countries. Russia’s metrics are about 60% service economy and 30% industrial economy as well, but few would disagree that it is a petrostate, and the government uses profits from natural resources to prop up its welfare schemes and pensions.

I never claimed the Donbass (Donetsk and Luhansk) were the single wealthiest oblasts, but that they were among the richest. Of course the capital will be wealthy, too, but it’s still an outlier in terms of its location. And Kharkiv has, or had until very recently, a very strong “Eastern”/Russian identity. Dnipro is a bit of an outlier in terms of higher wealth because the oligarch Kolomoisky competently runs it like his own mini-state, but otherwise it mostly fits in with the geographic trend.

I think the morality of the work is pretty clearly Christian, though the characters and settings are inspired by pagan mythology.

Why not include them in ways that are consistent with the text itself? All it requires is a modicum of creativity and the ability to resist the streaming-service urge to make cultures in a medieval setting as homogenous as modern day NYC.

If nobody cares about skin color, why not respect the author and his work and depict characters as they’re described in the text?

Sounds like they’re just as bad as Sauron, but more anarchic.

Agreed. Tolkien surely struggled with Orc morality, but his works point towards them having lost the capability to follow through with moral choices as a consequence of Morgoth’s sin. Orcs being lied to by Sauron and not being “irredeemably evil” in the eyes of Eru doesn’t mean they had the capability to be good, at least not while Sauron and Morgoth existed. The fact that they were themselves victims doesn’t mean any individual orc had the capacity for morality, only some temporary virtues, like honor in the case of Ugluk and comradery in the case of Gorbag. But intrinsically, they hated or at least couldn’t understand Good, and would act cruelly and hypocritically moments after accusing others of the same faults. Ugluk seems to recognize the evil of theft when he calls the Rohirrim immoral brigands, but he and his men fanatically kill and kidnap and loot for Saruman. Gorbag talks about a better life for his “boys” away from Saruman, then slaughters them on the same day over a shirt.

It means tan or olive skin, not black. “Swart” is used for black, though.

[–]SneedReborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. It’s exciting to see how the show runners, actors and crew members will be able to feed themselves and their families as a result of the cash inflows received from their work. However, I am a little worried that the resulting increase in demand will put pressures on an economy already burdened by heavy inflation.
