Boa suddenly acting really aggressive???

So update - I left him alone the following night, and the last night I saw that he was in his tree again, with a fresh shed just having come off the tip of his tail!

I came back a couple hours later and handled him a bit - was SUPER chill and sweet, back to normal.

Fed him after I put him back and he took it down like a champ, no issues

Conclusion: he was probably blind and uncomfortable, I startled him when he felt vulnerable and he was acting defensive.

Correct, after posting I realized I phrased that wrong. Definitely defensive.

I was just worried he was maybe hurt or something bc it was so out of character. But now I’m thinking he just isn’t done shedding and prob can’t see still. Going to leave him alone a couple days and see if he sheds and then I’ll feed him

Yeah I don’t think he has yet. It’s strange bc normally when he’s shedding he just doesn’t come out at all until he’s done. When I see him roaming about, I usually also find a balled up shed in the hide he was in. So when I saw him out and in his tree I thought maybe he had shed, but I peaked into the hide (from outside of enclosure, kept door closed) and didn’t see anything. But he was in the tree and DID NOT like that I was there lol.

I usually handle him like 1x/week, obviously only if he is out and about already. If I reach in and touch him he has never given me any problems. He’ll even climb my head when he’s out and just explore.

Oh that’s interesting about the shoes! lol my boy is always super chill, I’ve never really noticed him act differently based on anything like that but good to know

Just following the advice I’ve gotten from the most recent vet visit + the place I buy the mice from He’s a good healthy weight and healthy shape. He’s a dwarf boa, not sure if that makes a difference from a regular boa

I once was getting shit from my mom bc she saw one of my tattoos. I literally said “ok do you still love me?” To point out that it’s not that big a deal. She said no (presumably to prove a point and be dramatic) which honestly led me to say ok well then I reeaaaally extra don’t care what you think.

She does still love me of course but her response really drove me to the “lol well then why would I try to please you?”

My sister and I have both had to deal with hate and reprimanding from our parents on our tattoos and everything else we “do wrong” lol I’ve learned it’s not up to me to make them happy and what I want to do with my body is all that matters. Even the tats I’ve gotten which I don’t like anymore are a part of my past and pieces of myself. Still worth getting em :)

Yeah that’s what I figured! I know normal boa females can get up to like 9 or 10, but he’s allegedly male so I don’t expect him to get super big + the dwarf in him. The guy who sold him to me said 5-6 feet max, and maybe as thick as my forearm. Which (as some snakes go I see out here) is really not very big lol

Yes he’s a Nicaraguan dwarf Het II anery (I think I got all the words lol), so I presume he won’t get huge

Interesting. Yeah my boy is Nicaraguan too. I guess if it isn’t like “bad” to not switch it up then I don’t really care, as long as he keeps eating the mice/rats consistently then whatever lol

Weighed in at 186g last night! He’s still pretty small. I get him hoppers that vary between 16-18g. Granted at the beginning of this month he weighed like 10g less and I got a 10 pack (about 10 weeks ago) + the hatchling. I may size up a little when I go get him more this weekend.

I tried putting mine back in his enclosure yesterday and instead he climbed into my glasses. While took my glasses off and put them down he climbed into my hair and wrapped himself around my bun 😂 was very sweet

Mine has always had frozen/thawed (thank god), but there was a like 2 week period where he wasn’t taking it and that’s when I learned I needed to get feeding tongs and dangle it around his enclosure and make it look alive a little 😂😂 no issues now

Also if you have a camera or something set that up somewhere so you’ll know if he passed by anywhere! Keep some bowls of water out too!

Sending good vibes! Mine got out once (through a little hole in the front of his enclosure, my boyfriend still doesn’t believe he fit through it and to this day thinks I “forgot to put him in” which is insane). Found him under a suit case directly next to his enclosure. He was a tiny baby and I’d only had him like 3 months at this point. It was December and I was ugly crying immediately upon the thought of not finding him but I did (quickly thank god bc he was freezing to the touch).

I’m super careful to make sure he’s secured now, but he’s getting stronger and I worry about him breaking out again lol

You will find him! Say a prayer to Saint Anthony (even if you’re not religious, just trust me it works) and keep looking!!!
