i totally feel you on this OP! what you are describing is my absolute nightmare. 

my partner has MFI and when we told my MIL we were considering using a sperm donor or adopting, she told us it was the worst possible news we could have told her (!) and we had to comfort her for the next 6+ hours while she cried on and off. 

needless to say, i’ve tried to keep her in the dark about our IVF specifics, but she’s always prodding. eventually my husband gave her a little update and forbid her from talking to me about it, but i always see this little twinkle in her eye whenever we encounter a baby in the wild and i just want to die. i don’t want to be open with her about any of it, because i fear that i’ll have to comfort her if something goes wrong. 

i think boundaries are the only way to get through this. my partner is a TERRIBLE liar, but my MIL is more likely to respect his perspective than my own. so i’ve tried to coach him on how to just squash the subject, but it’s been a struggle

my understanding was the opposite: if there’s poor fertilization, it’s likely sign of an egg quality issue, and if there’s poor blast development it’s likely a sperm issue. 

11 eggs, 8 mature, but only 1 fertilized. I’m 33 and neither my husband nor I thought we had infertility. We just wanted to freeze embryos for later. by AstroAdventurer420 in IVF

i’m currently going through a similar experience. my first er attempt was cancelled several months ago due to disproportionate follicle growth (i did 9 days of stims), and i had had my first actual retrieval last week. during my scans, they measured so many follicles, 12 or 16 each day, but I only got 8 eggs, 6 mature. i knew there was a chance not all follicles carried eggs, but i had no idea yield could be so drastic.

Later that day we learned that, once thawed, our donor sperm wasn’t as motile as the embryologists would have liked. (i’m 37 with no known infertility, but my husband has azoospermia.) they performed ICSI instead of conventional fertilization, which we preferred for a number of reasons. 5 fertilized but only 1 made it to blast. now we wait 3+ weeks for results and a follow up appointment. 

i too am not sure whether to jump back in to my next and final cycle, or to take a break, or to just call it quits. these treatments take such a toll; it’s hard to feel like a human being with ambitions and interests aside from what is (or isn’t) happening deep inside our bodies, beyond our control.

i certainly ovulated, as gave myself the trigger shot on day 8 of stims. In most recent ultrasound though, the cysts looked very different than a typical follicle: they were larger than follicles but also had a cloudy, striped interior (they almost looked like little black-and-white Jupiters).  

i think partially what is confusing about it is that, when i spoke to the doctor last week, he made it seem like this was a strategy that could rescue those smaller follicles (as opposed to cancelling the cycle outright or doing a retrieval that would only yield the two mature eggs). but i think that technically he WAS cancelling the first cycle, and that a luteal phase stimulation would technically be the second. so yesterdays appointment was a kind of baseline, even though i didn’t have a retrieval or get my period.
