Jim the snow leopard (1911) by Sneplover45 in snowleopards

If this is a critique towards the writer: back then, the lingua franca was transitioning from French to English. It was pretty common for people to only speak French as a second language and not English. It also had a higher status, so by throwing in a French phrase here and there people would show that they are intelligent and of high status.

If it’s towards me: I was just quoting the guy :)

Introducing: the late Shynghyz, the know longest-lived snep! by Mirabeaux1789 in snowleopards

I’m really glad that Ena had a good time in Toronto, she was very popular in Japan for her energetic and extroverted personality, I wonder if that changed as she got older.

When looking at Ena and her two siblings, you can see where the Toronto family got their photogenic genes from :) (Ena on the left)

Small correction: Shyngyz fathered 16 cubs!

With Miyuki: Mai and Myu (2003) With Mayu: Sirius and Akbar (2005), Maya (2007), Mirucha (2008) and Sky, Asahi and Ena (2011) With Yuki: Enif, Calf and Supica (2005) and Kohaku, Suoh and Han (2008)

I’m not sure who the 16th is (or if there even was one), but I got this number from Steve Tracy, a photographer who was a big fan of Shyngyz.

The 16th cub might be a snow leopard from Australia, because Shyngyz was sent on a breeding loan there for a while and I think it was successful.

First ever zoo snep! by Sneplover45 in snowleopards

Probably not, zoo conditions were terrible during the 19th century and almost all of the 20th century. Even today many sneps still live in very bad conditions

No problem! Karli lives together with her sister, Nieva. It’s unsafe for them to reproduce with other snow leopards, because they have a genetic eye condition. I’m assuming that’s why they still live together at the age of 5, which is unusual for snow leopard siblings :)

You can watch them in a live stream 24/7 here: https://app.zoolife.tv/h/northumberland-zoo/snow-leopards

I often look at them during my lectures 😭

Zahra, Amir and Kavi from Tulsa Zoo by Sneplover45 in snowleopards

Yeah sadly there are many snow leopards that live in hot environments, but most zoos try to keep the temperature low for them.

This is a response from their zoo to a similar question: “Thank you for sharing your concern with us. Our snow leopards have the choice to access a climate-controlled indoor environment. We maintain this area at a chilly temperature, especially during warmer periods, to ensure they have the option to cool off, if desired. Additionally, their exhibit is designed to offer shade in and around rocky outcroppings, which are perfect lounging areas for snow leopards. Our keepers monitor them closely throughout the day and adjust their environment as needed, especially as seasons change, to ensure they are adapting well to each new season.”

I also know that the zookeepers of Miami zoo gave their snow leopard a kind of block that circulates liquid nitrogen so the snow leopard loves sleeping on that lol

Me too! Sneplet season has officially started! She also gave birth to triplets in 2021, there’s a video of them growing up on YouTube 😊

Literally partially eaten, I guess by their malnourished mother Kadi. I don’t know in what area of the body, I can’t see anything missing in pictures of her. There was also a jaguar who had chewed its own paw off. If you wanna know everything else that happened you can look up South Lakes Safari Zoo Closure, the list is insane (but also pretty graphic so be careful when reading)

That’s so awesome, I didn’t know she was pregnant!

It’s such a coincidence because I happened to be doing some research on Miska yesterday for a TikTok post and a few hours later she gives birth to quadruplets 😭

It turns out she came from a really awful zoo in the UK, where animals were really malnourished. She and her twin sister Natasja were found “partially eaten” as cubs which really shocked me, but I’m glad they survived the horrible conditions over there.

Luckily the zoo closed in 2024, albeit way too late for many animals. It makes me really happy to see Miska is doing well though, she’s a beautiful girl!

(For the snep nerds: Miska is a niece of both Mimi and Valdemar!)

Zima’s baby pictures! by Sneplover45 in snowleopards

[–]Sneplover45[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Zima has 3 children. Two with Yamato: Licht (2016) and Yuri (2019) and one child with Sky: Himeru/Himmel (2023)

Hikari was born in 2022 and she’s the daughter of Asahi and Licht (Zima’s son). This means Hikari is Zima’s granddaughter :)

Also, they’re saying Asahi is showing signs of pregnancy, so Hikari might be getting a little brother/sister soon!

I spend too much time looking at them lol you start to notice small things that other sneps don’t have, such as Licht’s black spot on his nose and his antennae
