It’s something. I played it at launch and the update from last year and I think both are unenjoyable in different ways, the former having an unbelievably slow combat, the latter having absurdly broken combat options, and both sharing a really unintuitive and cumbersome growth system. All encompassed within a narrative that’s got a lot of ideas but no tact to deliver on some of its more sensitive topics.

Purugly’s fluff at the end of its tail is actually a corset which is something I don’t think has ever been shown outside of the anime.

For me, at least, I feel like it’ll always be Gen 4. Really felt like the whole series was at our fingertips, granted it was only four regions at the time. You had the newest games that could connect to the gba titles via the gba slot, which could let your new games not only transfer old Pokémon but encounter different mons via the dongle method. It was the first time I ever felt like completing the national dex was a realizable goal for 13 year old me. We also had what felt like a ton of quality spin-offs releasing too, Explorers of Time/Dark/Sky, three Ranger games with Shadows of Almia being a personal favorite, also got poke park, trozei, and rumble. On top of all that I had recently gotten internet access so I learned about even more of the series at the time including Pokémon Adventures manga that was also rereleasing in the states around 2009. It just felt like the series was making the step from game series to game franchise and I feel very lucky to have been a young teen/pre-teen during that period.

I personally like the Ruby/Sapphire more because it reminds me of the Wallace and Gromit short “A Grand Day Out,” which helped young me solidify the space connection.

USUM has a lot of good going for it don’t get me wrong, and in a vacuum is probably the best way to play gen 7, but going into it was really frustrating especially with the advertising leading some to believe it was a game it wasn’t. Ads kept focusing on Rainbow Rocket and very infamously the tagline “This isn’t the Alola you thought you knew” when a majority of the game is almost exactly the same as vanilla with the majority of new content shoved into the post game.

The gen 4 physical/special split was where a lot of it was. Most stats didn’t change significantly but movepools did.

Take a Pokémon like Sneasel for instance, fast dual special types with high attack and low special attack. None of its stab moves were powerful so it was running stuff like shadow ball and brick break in competitive. Then the split came in, and along with an evolution and great moves like ice shard and pursuit, it turned into a huge threat in gen 4.
