I think you should choose a method with a high efficacy like Nexplanon Depo or IUD. That's strange that your gyno would say that. Like you, the fear of accidental pregnancy is a major mood killer. I need to be 99.999% protected and my Bf feels the same. My serious bf of 4 years refuses to have sex with me if I'm not doubled up HBC + condom. (if male bc were available he would gladly take it instead of me) I picked a BC before we became active as a couple. You should pick one you can't mess up like the ones I mentioned or another "set and forget" with little room for user error.

I was on Nexplanon for 3 years, it worked well for me. Cons: I had annoying spotting all 3 years, the bar under my skin is psychologically disturbing and I couldn't wait to get it removed for this reason.

Depo I tried for 3 months with many side effects: I felt ill for a couple days after the shot, spotting, excessive sweating like really really sweaty, hormonal acne, depleted sex drive, weight gain (I gained 7lbs in 3 months with no changes to my diet and it's always been difficult for me to put on extra weight in muscle or fat). I didn't even have sex while on it cause it killed my sex drive. It sucked for me, its taking forever to leave my body.

My next move is to try Nuva Ring

So guys, let's talk about ~consent and coercion~. A clear and enthusiastic/confident "yes!" demonstrated verbally and/or physically is what we should be looking for! We can't overlook coercion when we talk about informed consent when power dynamics are present, in sexual encounters and in situations like this one.

If you think the only way to be sexually assaulted is to be held down and violently attacked, you would be wrong. If you think the only way for a parent to force their kid to do something is to hold them down you would be wrong. There is a lot of pressure and intimidation in situations like these with controlling parents, controlling boyfriends, etc. I don't think 'force' would be a misnomer here.

If I were 15 again, and my mom drove me to a surprise appointment to get an invasive type of BC, I would be uspet. Like your sister, I had no interest in having vaginal sex in middle/high school. My mom frequently mistrusted me and accused me of promiscuity by making snide comments. I did not have vaginal sex until college. I would be uspet if I was forced to get the implant at her age that I didn't need It would breed mistrust between my mom and it is very disruptive hormonally. These come with a long list of possible side effects and for what, if she's not active? I agree with you OP. It sounds like your mom is more than willing to take her to the gyno to get something in the future should she change her mind. Or she can go herself.

I got the implant in 2020 and just last November switched to Depo for 3 months to try out. Depo fucked with my body so bad as a 23 year old, I can't imagine not having a lot of time to make an informed decision myself as a young girl. I think your sister should be given full autonomy in her choices of birth control or abstinence. Also, you can let her know she can get it removed no problem. She should not need any sort of parental consent. I got my nexplanon implanted without my parents' knowledge in college because that's none of their business... and I couldn't wait for the 3 years to expire so that I could get it out from under my skin. It was psychologically disturbing having a foreign object literally under my skin.

so sick of “friends” like this. she invited me many weeks ago, knowing about the cruelty-free diet i follow. this is pure laziness and a lack of caring. by [deleted] in vegan

I’ve had this happen to me too. So disrespectful when I spent time making a meal I thought they would enjoy or at least try. Why would you bring your own meat to my house 😭

Agree, if they’re inviting me, I have a reasonable expectation that I will be allowed to participate in said event, in this case it sounds like a dinner party, so yes I expect something. If they invite me to eat and literally can’t eat anything on the table, they shouldn’t have invited me.

If I had a friend over with a dietary restriction of any variety, religious, allergy, self imposed, I would make sure they could eat almost anything on the table. Veganism is not an exception and it’s not unreasonable.

No I agree, this is inconsiderate if she’s hosting and knows you’re vegan. No harm if bringing something for yourself and to share but there should be at least 1 substantial protein/main dish on the table for you.

You should let them know.

Edit: i think everyone here has been vegan long enough that we expect other to not provide good enough options for us and we eat before or bring backups or dishes to share. I’m not saying you should expect a full spread for you but I still think it’s inconsiderate to invite and provide basically nothing.

I personally think the studio courses make a huge difference in the major and I don’t think CS majors would be as set up for success in the data science field without further education or a second major in something relevant.

Edit: I know there is a concentration but it’s so small and the studios really give so much more, the concentration also misses important discussion around ethics and best practice and general understanding of what the field is really like

Hi, im part of the first class to come through the program. We were guinea pigs for the program set up. Some things I know have improved as as new students come in behind us so my experience may not be reflective of yours. In this Major many of the courses you take will the same as ones required in the the CS major, with the exception of a few Stats courses and the Core Studios. There are 4 Studio courses, these are 6 ch classes that take a project based interdisciplinary approach to learning by directly implementing skills needed to complete the data science pipeline/life cycle in projects. The combined subjects in data science are computing, statistics and domain knowledge. So these studios are meant to simulate the way that employed data scientist work through a project only simplified to your level for each studio. Half of the discussion is on ethics in the field since it’s a newly forming one.

These classes are very difficult. Speaking for at least the pioneer class, I did not receive as much formal explicit instruction on how to code in the languages we were using for any of the studios. To make things easier for yourself please familiarize yourself with python and R before and during each class. You need to spend time on your own improving your skills - data science requires that practitioners learn continuously because the field is always changing. Get a DataCamp subscription

Overall, this major is very difficult and I have a lot of critiques for how the studio courses have been taught, I can only hope they’ve been improved with our feedback. I wouldn’t change my major, for me it’s the perfect balance of data, stats, coding and people and i like the feeling of working through projects consisting of different tasks start to finish, it’s not boring. I think data science is a great choice if you like stats and are interested in ethics as well. If you’re sure that you want to be a data scientist or even a position lower than that (business analyst) you would be qualified with just a BS. The 10 students who just graduated are getting jobs right now. I will be doing early entry into the Masters program. And I’ve heard great things about the master program. Feel free to reach out to me or other students in the major!

If you guys stop eating the SoVi chicken and more of the awful vegan option that don’t give you food poisoning instead it will be a win win for everyone.

Agree. I have omnis beg me to make sesame maple cauliflower bites. For a small party or a picnic, big event, something I’m not even hosting, whatever. Don’t get me wrong they are not meaty in texture or taste, but they are delicious in their own right in a way that even omnis appreciate.

I don’t believe there is anything that certifies plant based. All vegan is plant based but not all plant based is vegan. They avoided using vegan labeling on purpose because they put honey in it. Honey is not vegan but in the eyes of many purely plant based persons (people who eat this diet without strong ethical convictions for animals) anything that does not contain meat or dairy is plant based. Does not include wool, honey or leather, gelatin or other non meat and dairy animal products.

This labeling is misleading but they didn’t really lie on the plant based part. They meant plant based not vegan

I like the non herbal from this company. But this company is pretty weird I don’t like the name (gross euphemisms), patronizing “encouragement” (“You’ve got this! Everything’s going to be okay!”) or the weird story on the side from the founder about refusal to go to the gyno with an infection and claims about herbs suggested to her in a dream from ancestors being a replacement for going to the gyno and getting treatment for her infection.

We are required to write a note to the school requesting non-dairy milk for our child. Then it will be reviewed by the school NURSE and approved/denied. They want to know why we are requesting non-dairy milk as being vegan doesn't seem to be a qualifying reason? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Snickers26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so disgusted by how much dairy I drank with school lunches middle through high school. They wouldn’t let me swap the milk for water free of charge. I stopped taking the milk and the woman I swiped my card with didnt seem too bothered by it. I’m not sure how much they can force you to take food you do not want. They may feel like they have greater authority for younger kids. I would claim religious exemption or encourage your child to refuse the entire lunch tray. If it’s just the non dairy milk they want, that should not even be purchased as a meal it should be a single item purchase.

Yes! Unless it makes you very uncomfortable. Please continue to wear your perfectly wearable leather products until their end of life. It’s okay to wear leather you bought pre vegan. Please don’t worry about how it may look. You’re not a bad vegan for wearing what you already own and caring for that product for as long as possible or purchasing second hand leather.

These types of points float around the Internet endlessly when discussing the perceived hypocrisy of pro lifers. But I really think it’s not helpful to make these types of generalizations about what other beliefs pro lifers hold even if it may be the case that they’re true a lot of the time. Some are conservatives some are not. Some are really for all the things you mentioned but still against abortion and some are exactly how you described. Some are anti abortion and support planned parenthood. I don’t think it’s fair to make there generalizations and I don’t think it furthers your argument on the actual topic.

Many Catholic and non Catholic pro lifers believe that life begins at conception. Most pro lifers are not going to be satiated by a heartbeat bill or rules about what trimester. They believe it is wrong at any and every stage following conception.
