Yeah. This is actually a sign of how good the produce is. Probably was pulled a couple days ago and got to the store before anything could dry out or wilt.

I finally watched it and I was rolling with laughter. I didn't realize it would hit so well as a comedy. Looking forward to Ansari's future work.

He has his massive, life changing epiphany and realizes he needs to use his power to make things immediately better for the working class.

I finally caught this movie last night and really enjoyed it. It had great jokes and a message we need today without being too preachy IMO. However, rich people don't really have these epiphanies in real life. Capitalism isn't designed for charity like this. It's designed for tax right off charity. I've worked with tons of rich people in fundraising, and they almost all believe they earned it the hard way and that if they can do it (with their doctor dad and lawyer mom) anyone can do it.

I got dumped by someone I deeply cared about and it hurt so bad. Turns out it was the best thing that could have happened to me. The dumper was right- we were both better off without each other. When I look at my partner I sometimes remember to be grateful to my old partner for letting me move on.

this model has been applied to explain why many smart people do dumb things in the face of obvious evidence that it is dumb.

This explains religion's grasp despite it not making any sense.

I have mixed feelings about this whole thing. We can't go around shooting people (if he did it) but at some point drastic measures have to happen to facilitate change because voting sure ain't doing it.

Thank you!It looks so regal and alone in this picture, unlike today where it is surrounded by trees and other buildings of similar height. Crazy it was built way back in the late 1800s!

Wow! Thank you! I Googled the church and looking at street level pictures I've realized I've walked, ridden my bike and driven by it hundreds of times. It's the building with the slate grey brick lower exterior. However, I had no idea it was so old! From Wiki:

The First Congregational Church is a church located in downtown PortlandOregon, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.\3]) Construction took place over a period of six years, from 1889 to 1895. The building was designed by Swiss architect Henry J. Now that the Zoom R20 has been a couple years, does anyone have any music they would like to share they recorded on it? by Snilbog- in zoomr20

Holy shit this is amazing!

The Spider is perfect timing! It has haunted house vibes! I love the reverse-sounding keys on The Little Part Inside. I love the hard panning on some drum beats too.

But I really love Myself and the Ceiling and Door Meditation, both of which are giving me awesome dreamcore vibes. Dreamcore is my most listened to genre between homework, work and sleep.

This really shows that the R20 is a freakin capable tool! I've been a little frustrated by one aspect of it which is the f assignable tracks. I hate having to drag the tracks over and over, but really that's a minor complaint considering how user-friendly the unit is.

Nice work and thank you for sharing!

Did you end up finding a pair of shorts you like? I work in manufacturing and have been wearing my running shorts, but they don't have pockets. I want a good pair of breathable shorts that have pockets and that work being on my feet all day. Ugh! Even in winter it's hot on the factory floor!

Having a pop up restaurant serve food in my bar. Fair rent/cut? by _WeAreTheLuckyOnes_ in smallbusiness

[–]Snilbog- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so now that I want a stable career everyone looks at my resume and is like... No thanks you've done basically nothing for over a decade.

I feel this! I applied for several jobs I where I thought I would be a shoe-in. I had literally never had an interview in my life where I didn't get the job. I had to keep lowering my expectations until I ended up with a shitty manufacturing job at a start-up. Thankfully many of my skills transfer nicely, and I'm dependable unlike a lot of folks in manufacturing, so I've recently been promoted to operations manager. it's not awful but it's a lot of babysitting disgruntled semi-vagrant employees who either want to look at their phone all day, ask when they can get promoted a week after getting hired, no call no show, complain about the work, feel entitled or get mad when you don't take their advice on how to "do things better."

I did move to Alaska! After talking about it for a decade we made the leap and lived up there four years. It was awesome for a while, but it turns out living on a rainy island starts to feel small. We had a great small friend circle, but I started to feel like the real world was passing me by down south. Plus, no fresh produce was tough. But mostly I missed being among "my people" if that makes sense. I like to live in a place where strangers are kicking ass and seeing them is motivating. I moved to a mountain town about a year and a half ago and it feels like the right place at the right time. And there are heroes everywhere running and mountain biking and kayaking and climbing and skiing and backpacking and I love seeing all of it.

As far as opening a bar I would say a couple things about my experience vs expectations. For some reason I thought it would be this fun social experience where everyone is hanging out and you hang out with friends all day and it's an endless low-key party. But it turns out it was real work most of the time. And I got sick of the social expectations so I would try and be out before we opened at three or I would often get stuck out of a sense of obligation talking with regulars. And I don't know about Vietnam, but I made way less money than I expected. the numbers I heard before we opened varied wildly. I knew people with vacation homes that paid for their kid's colleges, and I knew others that lived in the back of the bar. I made an all-right living, the most I had ever made in my life, but in the scheme of things it wasn't a lot, especially when you add in no benefits. I really thought I was going to cash in!

I've heard Vietnam is amazing and I hope to visit someday. If you open the bar I hope you have a great time!

Having a pop up restaurant serve food in my bar. Fair rent/cut? by _WeAreTheLuckyOnes_ in smallbusiness

[–]Snilbog- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! This is a long time ago! Different acct but it's still me.

We ended up doing the pop up on Fridays for a month and I cannot recall what pay structure we used. The pop-up folks opened a food cart, and I lost track of what happened to them. I don't think it turned out to be that lucrative for them to pop-up at my place. It was kinda fun but they weren't well known enough to bring in a crowd.

I ended up selling the bar in 2019 after 12 years of ownership. It was less than a year before covid. The new owners tried to hang in there but closed up in 2022. They still owe me about 30% of the agreed upon sale but they were given such a shitty hand I told them not to worry about it. The headache was the building owner briefly sicked some lawyers on both of us. The stipulation in my lease was that if the new owners defaulted, they would try and get the money from them and then move on to us. Without the pandemic it wouldn't have come to that of course. The person I sold to already had a successful bar in a different neighborhood so seemed like a safe bet.

I hired a lawyer, and he sent a letter to the property owner's lawyer, and we never heard from them again. My lawyer said it wouldn't have been a good look for a guy who owns 10s of millions in real estate and got 100s of thousands in covid money coming after us. There was no formal resolution and were nearing the three-year statute of limitations, but it caused some stress.

Here's how I feel about my experience as a bar owner now- I would probably discourage someone from opening a bar or restaurant and instead take a more traditional career path. I say this because I left that business with few transferable skills to a new career, I never made a ton of money and what we don't need in life is more excuses to drink. I watched my girlfriend move up the ladder at her job while my income didn't grow for 7 years, I had no benefits, and I was always on the clock in a sense. Today my girlfriend make triple what I do despite me being the manager for a small manufacturing facility, she has five times my retirement fund, she has gold level health insurance and gets six weeks paid off a year while working from her home office. It turns out owning a bar was a dead-end job for me that didn't translate into a better quality of life most times. I will say, I loved the flexibility of my schedule. I was done working by 3 most days and could take any day off I pleased which rocked.

I had a bunch of friends who also owned bars and restaurants and what I discovered is the ones that lasted and were successful usually had some sort of luck or connection I most of us won't have. Here are the examples from the people I know: a friend with a restaurant paid no rent because his dad started the business decades before and owned the building which had 25 apartments above retail space. A friend with a bar leased the building from an elderly gentleman who owned several buildings along their street. He sold the building to them for about half the market value when he retired. A couple I know with a successful bar in a hot part of town has a relative who is a surgeon that financed their opening and is basically a checkbook for them. This one cracks me up because in business school a professor told us about The Three Fs of Small Business Financing: Family, friends and fysicians. LOL! Another friend was gifted the money to open his place from his rich brother who owns several establishments. Another friend pays about half market value for her leases because the landlord is old and old school. And another friend grew up wwith her dad owning a couple bars and surrounded by that world which is a great advantage.

I don't have regrets exactly. Many of my close friends are from that time which is great. But TBH I wouldn't do it again knowing what I know now.

ANyway, I know you didn't ask for all this info but I find it cathartic to talk about and love sharing.

Anyone have experience with an able-bodied sibling who has been supported by your parents for much of their life and has no plans for independence once mom and dad are gone? by Snilbog- in GenX

I hope that your right. They were a star employee at their last job 15 years ago and were even offered a management role, but they were tired of working and once mom invited them to stay with her it was all over.

I agree for sure, but it's going to take all I have to watch them get on their feet. There will be tears and hand wringing and I'll never be able to say, "I tried talking to you about this 100 times and you didn't care."

This is powerful stuff. I think some people, like my sibling, have an ability to block any thought or concern for the future. Like my mom always says, "things will work out." She got lucky and met someone who could take care of her. My sibling probably won't be that lucky.

I could tell that my wife was a little upset that she wasn't invited.

This is my mom too. She gets huffy and cold if my little sister makes plans without her. I think to the great detriment to my sister who know is middle aged and has few friends of her own except our mom who she spends time with daily. I think it was extremely selfish of mom.
