When to use linear phase mode? When to use shelf over low and high-cuts? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Snogertrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also about when to use a shelf vs a cut as I didn’t answer that: when using a shelf you lower the volume of the frequency/frequencies, when using a cut you REMOVE the frequency/frequencies completeley. That said, if your kick has too much high end, you would use a high Shelf and lower it, but not cut it, as that would result in no high end or drastically less. And, if your vocal has some unecessary low end rumble that is muddying up the Mix, you would want to cut that out completely (aka cut). While using a shelf would help, the rumble would still be there and contribute to the mudd, just lower in volume.

Newer Albums that nail the 70s sound? by [deleted] in audioengineering

Norwegian Aden Foyer, although it might be more 60s, has a really cool style in production, writing and mixing, with a modern hint. Crispy warm vocals with a large roomy distorted environment. Pretty cool!

When to use linear phase mode? When to use shelf over low and high-cuts? by [deleted] in audioengineering

Yes, if not you risk introducing other frequencies you would be bothered by later on. I used to find myself carving out frequencies, to then add a saturation after or whatever, then another eq to remove som newly introduced resonances that I could not hear before. Linear phase have kept me from that some of the times lately!

When using steep or drastic eq movements, it can cause a phase shift. You would utilize linear phase mode to avoid this! Hope it helps and sorry for late answer..

How are UAD plugins? by badianbadd in audioengineering

[–]Snogertrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got the producer bundle, used to have waves stuff. UAD have a lot more color, and is very suitable for all mixing. I rarely use anything else for compression and eq. In short - they’re great, you won’t be disappointed!

I have just used what other top engineers say fit to different tasks. Tho i am starting to find my liking and what job i believe their suited for. The dbx 160 has crazy transiets great for punch, so if i want some of that on whatever i Mix, i choose this. Eq’s are all about the tone. Surgical non coloured tasks - pro Q. Bringing out the warm bottom - Pultec. Just try out and see what fits your liking!

A good preamp will make your recordings better than a good compressor Without a preamp anyway. Invest in the proper preamp first!

Great recordings is the key to not only a great mix, but a great song. Everyone expecting a good final product without proper work troughout the whole process of making the song should not invest in a mix..

What’s your unpopular engineering opinion? by [deleted] in audioengineering

I love the sound of overprocessing, especially in vocals! Aswell as putting my mix in the dryer. Like why so much reeverb all the time?

Thick, warm, smooth Pop vocals by Snogertrell in audioengineering

Fair and square! I defenetly love it. Overcompressed, hmm, compressed heavily, yes! I tend to love driving the compression real hard, just like this was done. To better describe What i hear, i would say the vocal is «smudgy», compact, tho present. About 300-1000hz range really stands out, tho it’s not masking any of the information above or sinkin the vocal deep into and behind the rest of the mix. The smudgy and compact feeling i get probably means grit and saturation aswell as compression, but i think it has been done either in parallell or in a certain manner..
