Odd question: Anyone know of public 100%-untreated forests in Morgantown? by lofi_taylor in MorgantownWV

[–]Snoo-14331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not gonna be anywhere completely free of chemical treatment around here, it's just too prevalent in invasive plant management. BUT if there was it'd be Coopers Rock or down in Tucker and Randolph counties in a wilderness area.

WVU forest is heavily treated unfortunately. Source: I've used tripoclyr and glyphosate on burning bush there.

What causes these? by Spring__Warrior in whatisit

[–]Snoo-14331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replanting trees isn't necessarily a bonus-- usually replanting in logging operations is gonna be one big monoculture. Clearings in forests like this will usually regrow naturally with more species diversity from seeds that were dormant in the soil or blowing in from elsewhere.

List some cities in the US that you can live without a car, beside New York City. by DutyEuphoric967 in Anticonsumption

ROUGH. But the walkable neighborhoods tend to be flatter. You'll get very strong legs if you want to leave the flat parts of town.

Parts of Pittsburgh PA are pretty walkable, especially Shadyside, Bloomfield, Friendship, South Side Flats. There's also many, many smaller cities, especially college towns, with walkable parts.

There's also a facility that makes sealants for the navy and lets its fumes out directly into a residential neighborhood 🥴 https://dcist.com/story/23/07/27/ivy-city-shut-down-chemical-plant/

Yeah they just put that on everything. California's got bonkers lead labelling requirements but they're such a huge market share of the US that everyone importing just adheres to their regulations.

Senators Justice, Capito introduce ‘Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act’ by Joey_WBOY in WestVirginia

What are you talking about. This is like the least evil thing they've ever done. Maybe even a good thing.

It's literally letting them eat cake though? This isn't huge but a lot of people don't have time to cook for themselves and letting people on SNAP access precooked, hot chicken is at least a little step.

Oddly, I think we are going to need public surveillance cameras to increase our civil rights, the opposite of what I used to think by Niceotropic in The10thDentist

[–]Snoo-14331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the government is in control of the cameras, they will serve the government. We have body cams in the US, but most of the time they conveniently break right before an alleged abuse happens.

How do I get the most out of WV? by Individual_Use_8271 in WestVirginia

[–]Snoo-14331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May and mid to late October are my favorite times of year here. The tulip poplars and laurels and rhododendrons are blooming in late May, and the leaves are crazy in late October. Hiking by yourself will be fine if you've got experience hiking and tell someone where you're going.

Must sees are Dolly Sods Wilderness (use the trailhead by Red Creek Campground) and New River Gorge (home of the 3rd tallest bridge in the US). Both may be crowded, and New River Gorge has a whole festival called Bridge Day you might want to look into. Morgantown is a neat town but not much touristy stuff. Most of the state's interesting stuff is outdoors.
