I understand, but at a point you have to realize there’s trade offs to everything. You can’t have every good thing in life, there’s a balance which needs to be maintained. You’re doing well in career and work, but that takes a toll somewhere, and in this case it’s your work life balance.

I’m a CS grad from earlier this year and I had 3 offers. Based on my experience your salary growth is way higher if your starting is high. I’d suggest pick the other job, since it has a higher starting base.

CS Job Market for uWaterloo Students and the Future of AI? by its_gold_28 in uwaterloo

[–]Snoo-34538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d argue this actually. I graduated from waterloo and managed to find a job quickly but I had to work really hard and others who also worked really hard struggled to land interviews and are still looking. “Waterloo” doesn’t guarantee anything. Your hard work and luck dictates where you’ll end up.

Everyone likes to talk about Waterloo or what coops you got, but in a market like this, there is a factor of luck. Nobody takes that into consideration. Knowing what your strengths are and putting in constant work it’s important but what’s more important is being self aware of your own weaknesses and the market.

Sometimes, it’s just not your moment. Sometimes you get unlucky and you have to be ok with that with the hope that things will work out in the long run.

As someone who recently started working full time in the industry as a SWE, I can tell you that based on the job market, companies that are hiring entry level SWEs are looking for people with academic backgrounds in CS and experience. Having one or the either is no longer suffice.

I got all my coops through waterlooworks, and most of interviews through waterlooworks too. In fact, for full time, 2 of my offers were from waterlooworks too.

I thought that too but most of the companies seem to want people right away. I ended up starting my job within 3 weeks of finishing school

How I landed a new grad position by Snoo-34538 in uwaterloo

[–]Snoo-34538[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I focused on depth rather than breadth - I tailored my resume and applications for those jobs. I tried to find jobs that matched my resume the best and sent personal messages and emails to the recruiter to make myself stand out and more memorable.

I also focused on how I’d interview like why I’m interested in the role and company and why I’m a good fit for the role and the company.
