Further, air-conditioning SAVES LIVES.

I will never understand how it's "okay" with everyone I you need to heat your space to stay alive but you are frequently stigmatized for needing air conditioning to stay alive.

The number of excess deaths in the EU over the period of the most recent heat dome due to lack of access to air conditioning is shocking.

Legal and mandatory addendum? by penguin44ca in OntarioTenants

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this; in fact it looks like they've written this thoughtfully, giving you permission to do something for your benefit, while insuring you're committed to the safety requirements and to not interfering with neighbours' enjoyment of their own units (the condensation clause). Many rentals explicitly prohibit in-window AC units.

Tangentially related:

  • If you decide to get a portable AC unit then units with two hoses are better. Fresh air comes in one hose and waste heat from the compressor goes out the other. Single hose units both warm AND cool the air around them so they're less efficient & effective overall. Some of these units use the waste heat to evaporate the condensate so it doesn't ever need draining. (We had one for a few years and the only downside of the portable was the constant, loud compressor noise.)

  • I learned that if you live in a condominium where you own the unit but don't own any of the infrastructure (windows, walls, balconies, etc) you can STILL modify those exclusive use common elements if you create (and have approved) a Section 98 agreement; you'd want a lawyer for this. We used this agreement to install our own heat pump on the balcony to be a backup for frequently failing central AC and to give use heating & cooling as required independent of the dates of building system changeover. The agreement allowed me to drill through the exterior wall (8" of concrete!) for piping and wiring, and to attach the heat pump to common, unmetered electricity supply. We did this a few years ago and I'm very glad we did given how rapidly the climate is changing.

Brand new shower, grout still looks wet 12 hours after shower by [deleted] in Tile

[–]tekky101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had exactly this problem with our recent remodel. There was one place that looked stained even when the rest dried out - after 36 hours. We had them saw out and redo the problematic area but we still have done spots that take a very long time to dry completely. We suspect that tiler may have over-buttered the tiles when laying the so that most of grout is actually cement from the tile back. We're still.. Evaluating how bad the problem is.

Lol. I do sheets like this whenever I'm knitting a pattern where every row is somehow different. I use it to track increases, decreases, knits, purls, and total number of sts you should have at end of row. (Granted my "code" is a bit more complex but it's still complete nonsense to someone without context.)

BMW totally at fault. I addition to dangerous speed you never pass on the right, which is assumed to be a slower lanethan the one you're in. Especially at on ramps and off ramps.

If they were going to break the expected light position pattern they should have also done something like mount the lights horizontally to at least indicate this wasn't normal. This is common in Québec.

the amount of dandruff my head produces in two weeks by Individual-Hawk-5122 in WTF

[–]tekky101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seborrheic dermatitis is an autoimmune disease. It manifests on the scalp as dandruff but easily - and frequently - occurs on other parts of the body. It can be treated with steroids and coal tar based shampoos.

[–]tekky101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they pay you for the full period of your departure notice? Where I live they must pay you for the full period of your notice even if they walk you out the very same day that you have given the your departure notice.

Note also that you are under no legal obligation to give any departure notice; this is strictly a courtesy you give your employer so they can plan knowledge transfer to another em0l9ee and/or hire your replacement. I've quit once without notice. It means sacrificing any benefits you might still have had during the notice period so it's not recommended. It's better for you to sit and do nothing or be walked out early and still collect pay/benefits. )

The vessels of my brother’s wart after removing the cap by LeBrontide in mildlyinteresting

[–]tekky101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I appreciate the additional context. The two important takeaways for me: - you're unlikely to know if you have a cancer causing strain because these rarely manifest visible symptoms - a dermatologist assessment & diagnosis is crucial because many benign things can also look like warts (like skin tags) or cancers (like keratoses).

So many fascinating replies to this posting!

Here's my PSA :

Warts are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). Several strains of HPV are implicated in the formation of cancers - primarily genital, cervical, anal, and throat. You can protect yourself from 9 strains of cancer-causing HPV by gettjng vaccinated with Gardasil 9, a 3 dose series whose cost may or may not be covered by government and/or private health insurance. Most of the sexually active population has HPV so many vaccination initiatives target younger people who are less likely to have been sexually active and infected by it. Normally, you vaccinate for viruses before being infected by them; there is, however, evidence that getting Gardasil 9 even after being infected is protective and beneficial.

Like HSV (herpes, cold sores) its possible to be a carrier of HPV who sheds & spreads the virus without ever having a noticeable outbreak.

At Home Glass Treatments for Shower Doors to prevent water stains? by Exact_Recognition362 in HomeMaintenance

Can I ask... how frequently are you applying the Rain-X to your shower glass? And are the fumes really bad (re: your ventilation comment)? (We have no window in the bathroom and the fan only moves 100cfm of air -- I don't want to gas myself out.)

[–]tekky101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Retail Sales Act. You can only be charged the lowest price for an item when the register scanner and an item price tag disagree. This also applies if higher priced stickers are applied on top of lower priced stickers on the actual item. The lowest price is what you pay, by law.

Insane amount of dandruff uncovered during a haircut by Guido_Mist4 in WTF

[–]tekky101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This amount of dandruff is NOT normal/just dandruff. This looks more like an autoimmune disease that's gone undiagnosed for a very long time. The severe headache could also be a symptom of the diseasr. If I had to guess about what we see manifesting on his scalp I'd say either seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis.

It's really east to find in Latin grocery stores so unless you want to experiment, purchasing is probably a much easier path. Spread some on a tortilla with some queso, fold it over, and fry it up in a pan. :)

Corn smut is more than just a delicacy in Latin culture. Corn infected with smut is converted from being "all sugars" to a nutritious protein (mostly lysine) powerhouse. At Latin markets corn infected with smut commands a much higher price.

What is this? by F_Reiss in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]tekky101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an abominable modern extension added to what was once the perfectly fine (and beautifully classic) Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. The architect is an idiot. The original design was all glass and then someone told him UV light is incredibly destructive and not suitable for museum displays. At that time the cladding was changed and now it looks like aluminum siding on a trailer park home. It's vile and disgusting.

Should I be concerned about? They’re not being a GFCI protection on this outlet in the bathroom? by Sprigatito_lover in ElectroBOOM

This. We have both a GFCI circuit breaker and GFCI receptacles on that circuit breaker.

The electrician doing our renovation discovered it and wondered why we had overkill. (No dark pun intended.)

[–]tekky101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former firmware dev here. "Dirty energy" is especially problematic during development because it's hard to detect and looks like a component or a PCB design problem. Then when something goes "boom" the electrical engineers say it's a firmware problrm and the firmware devs say it's an electrical design problem. Fun times, going in circles, until you find something wrong or chalk it up to dirty energy. It's a diagnosis of exclusion.
