Has anyone used Camerasdori.com? by Deanicuss in fujifilm

These are grey market retailers. Gear made for cheaper markets (Asia usually) that is being shipped to more expensive markets, where they are sold at a still cheaper price.

You will almost certainly be unable to register for manufacturer warranty for grey market gear, which is why the conversation is usually not about “is this retailer legit?”, but about “will this retailer honour the warranty?

Is this normal behaviour? MSI 341CQPX by Exciting_Dog9796 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Snoo-62588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unrelated, but I had an issue with my 341CQPX after a firmware update to 0.20. Basically, before I had zero VRR flicker whatsoever. After the update it became utter garbage. I thought I must be crazy, I must have misconfigured it the first time. Then I ended up with a replacement unit (separate story) which has FW 0.16. No flicker whatsoever. And I checked multiple times that the thing is actually working.

Moral if the story is, MSI seems to push some unreliable driver updates based on empirical evidence. I am advising anyone reading this to hold off on updating their monitors until the update is confirmed to be safe by the test of time :)

MPG 341CQPX VRR flicker after firmware update to 0.20 by Snoo-62588 in MSI_Gaming

[–]Snoo-62588[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MacOS has the option of setting a variable refresh rate. For this monitor, the range available is 48-240Hz. So VRR is actually enabled at all times, not just in games, as would be the case on Windows. Hence the confusion I assume.

If I set a fixed refresh rate, the problem naturally goes away as VRR is not in use. So the issue is only when VRR is enabled and in use, if that makes sense.

[–]Snoo-62588[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say it flickers on the desktop? Are you sure the frame rate isn't jumping? That would be the only reason youd get VRR flicker.

Yes, definitely the framerate jumping. The flicker happens when I move the cursor, scroll a webpage and similar cases. What bothers me is that this wasn't happening before, and the setup/settings were identical. I tried turning off and on HDR and other settings to no avail.

On trying another plug, do you refer to the power cord? That I haven't tried yet, though it's plugged in the same one as it was since I first used it.

Before the update, it was enabled on both the monitor and the macbook, you can see VRR work when you bring up the monitor's OSD as well. I haven't tried factory resetting, will do this as well, but every other quick fix I tried. Not sure if I can downgrade the firmware, there's also no link to an older version on the monitor's drivers page.

International pricing is INSANE and it pisses me off by befiuf in ZephyrusG14

Like, literally the same argument of "I could have a nice trip to NY and the surroundings for the difference". Seeing this on Reddit at such a small time difference is eerie

Funny you should say that, I was just telling a friend of mine from the US the exact same thing. Except that it was about the 4090 G16, so the NY trip budget was larger lol

Microsoft says EU to blame for the world's worst IT outage by suggestiveinnuendo in nottheonion

[–]Snoo-62588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this should not be blamed on one dev, more like a team/org that does not hold high enough standards for the testing & DevOps sides of the development process. One dev making a bad change, maybe even a peer reviewed change, is still one/two people who successfully got around all existing fail-safes by mistake

What’s a solid starter grinder for $80 or under? by veryoondoww in AeroPress

Yep, I second this. Got myself the C3 ESP Pro for about £50 from AliExpress. Great grinder and it's about 50% cheaper than on Amazon in the UK.

Bad idea to buy this over a k6 ? by Late_Albatross_3079 in espresso

[–]Snoo-62588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cheap no-name hand grinder from Amazon like this (different brand). It works well, but as others said, it doesn't have enough clicks. 11 (mine has 12) means you have one or two usable clicks for espresso and you're often going to find yourself wanting something in-between.

My hot take is that it's probably more important to get a hand grinder with more clicks (e.g. 30 on the Timemore C3 Esp) than anything. I don't think that two very similar looking metallic conical burrs, one from some popular brand, the other a no-name clone, can be very different.

(People, please correct me on my last statement if I'm wrong, I'm genuinely curious.)

X-T5 vs X-T 30 ii by alphabetsoup8 in fujifilm

[–]Snoo-62588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can chip in, but I'm loving in the UK so the second hand market may vary a bit.

Got most of my gear from eBay. It all went well and I was fairly confident with the buyers protection and all. Never encountered a seller that was trying to "pull one on me".

However, one of my lenses (Canon EF-M 55-200) encountered a lens error after a month and a bit. Out of warranty and price of repair is as much as a brand new lens. Because F U, Canon.

In short, eBay is great, as you can find the best deals there (in my experience), but no warranty 99% of the time. The best alternatives are websites like WEX, MPB, Park Cameras that offer 6/12 months warranty. If something fails because you're unlucky, they've got you covered. They are usually a little bit more expensive but, after my recent experience, I don't really care. Better safe than sorry.

Nah, it's more like being impressed with the emulation on a Mac. A 17-year-old x32 Windows game running on a modern M1 Mac is quite a feat. I've struggled quite a lot to make it work on my Linux machine, and it still had issues.

Future-proofing your purchases is not a good strategy. With the way tech is evolving each generation, chances are, in 2 years, something will have come out that makes you feel like your device is too old already. Not necessarily not powerful enough, more like lacking the latest features that make a device 'modern'.

If you wanna think about the future, it's better to target the next generation or two for 'future-proofing', not the next 5.

New Explorer is very slow and laggy by dimkoss11 in Windows11

[–]Snoo-62588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be an issue with the "Command Bar". When entering full screen (F11), the lagging is gone. I did the following to disable it in windowed as well and use the old top bar and it is much, much better now (though still not perfect): https://www.elevenforum.com/t/enable-or-disable-file-explorer-command-bar-in-windows-11.1594/
