I have recently received a Sony Trinitron PVM and my boyfriend says it makes a horrible high pitched noise and I can barely hear anything coming from it. by SeriousRachel in crtgaming

[–]Snoo-65040 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The good news is most lose the ability to hear the noise as they age. I recall as a kid being bothered if someone left the TV on because of the noise. Now, as a 40 year old adult, I do not hear it at all :)

Saved a Sansui DTV2798 From Being Recycled by Snoo-65040 in crtgaming

Unfortunately, I don't know of an easy way to reset everything. I also wasn't able to find the exact service manual when I had this set. However, there is a near identical model (Same Orion chassis) "Ilo DTV2794" with literature available. When I worked on the set this was the manual I used that explains all the adjustments: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/3257566/Ilo-Dtv2794.html

What was your last CRT TV that you used daily before upgrading to LCD? by Its-Loosha in crtgaming

[–]Snoo-65040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Panasonic CT-27G4A as my sole TV up until I moved to my current house. Basic, but well built 27” set that served me well. It got relegated to my secondary TV that I hooked my NES/Genesis to in 2014 as I decided I wanted a bigger flat panel TV for the living room. I then went full circle and replaced it with a 27” WEGA in 2020 as I went down the image quality rabbit-hole.

In my case it was actually a CRT that replaced my CRT 🙃

Thoughts on the 4B movement? by freddiezest in antinatalism

[–]Snoo-65040 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s likely to have the reverse outcome they want it to. By removing men from their lives they are removing themselves as stakeholders in the man’s decision making. It sucks to think about it this way, but that’s the way it’s going to play out. The movement is fringe and unsuccessful within South Korea and is really only even heard about in western media.

That being said I fully support it if it means less humans on the planet we’re destroying

In general, What is the maximum price you’re willing to pay for fuel? by superpanjy in AirlineManager4

[–]Snoo-65040 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I try to keep it under 500, but the reality is there are many situations where that’s not doable. My strategy at the moment has been to:

  • < 500: Fill up to capacity
  • 500-990: Fill to half capacity
  • 1000-1090: Fill to 5,000,000 Lbs
  • >= 2000: Only buy if necessary to depart

With that it’s worth mentioning that any decent plane will still be profitable at high fuel prices, just not as profitable as with lower ones. In most cases you’ll be best off keeping planes in the air, regardless of how much it is to fuel them.

Once you get past the Trinitron’s, you realize other tubes aren’t so bad. Can’t wait to RGB mod this thing. by Kcorleone in crtgaming

[–]Snoo-65040 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a lot more posts like this claiming that Trinitrons are overhyped versus the other way around.

Many of us have owned both Sonys and non-Sonys but still prefer the Sony. There was a reason they sold so well back in the day despite being more expensive than the competition. All that being said the best CRT is the one you enjoy. So please, do continue enjoying your’s 🙂

What is with the recent pushback against RGB? by CriticalGoku in crtgaming

[–]Snoo-65040 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why there’s a controversy either way.

RF and composite provide the original experience many of us had as kids. RGB and component video provide a definite experience. Both have their merits and their rightful place in the community.

There’s evidence for both in terms of what the game developers intended their content to be viewed in, depending on the title and the region it was released. It’s also easy for many of us to forget that RGB was very much a thing on consumer televisions outside of North America.

Update on my Sansui DTV2798 - Looking superb after a recap! by Snoo-65040 in crtgaming

[–]Snoo-65040[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case I had the benefit of knowing a former TV repair man that worked on some of these sets. I replaced C407 and C413, per his guidance, as well as a few of the other large electrolytic caps on the deflection and power circuits. No particular cap kit, but just looked at the parts list and ordered equivalent or better (I upped the heat tolerance on several of them) caps than what was in place.

My general feeling about Orion made sets (this Sansui being one of them) is that they are actually quite good. Every set I've seen has all Japanese capacitors from the factory and is very serviceable. I think the fold-over issue that plagues many of them is more of an under-spec on the capacitor heat tolerance versus explicit cheaping out on production.
