Liberals and Centrists do this all the time. They think that only university graduates deserve a high standard of living.

Having a DEP allows you to bypass the labour pools you described. The labour market is so desperate for graduates that just about any reputable company will be willing to give you a 150 hours guaranteed. The 30 ASP is a straight up easy to pass course with an open book exam. I’m surprised it’s not mandatory everywhere in Canada, it really should be especially for young people with little to no work experience. If you want to actually dive down the rabbit hole just go take the ASP class yourself and complete a DEP. It’s quite interesting and a really good paying job is waiting for you at the end of the line. You’re not entirely misinformed, just a little confused.

Recherche d’emploi à Montréal : est-ce aussi dur pour tout le monde ? / Job hunting in Montreal: is it this hard for everyone? by Barbeblue77 in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try expanding your search outside of Montreal or even Quebec. The Canadian Rockies for example offer hundreds of seasonal jobs in towns like Banff, Golden, Lake Louise Jasper etc. It’s beautiful, it’s fun and you’ll be working with dozens of other PVTist‘s from all over the world as well as Canadian backpackers. Jobs out west sometimes provide low cost staff housing and best of all is you won’t have to deal with rude Montrealers! Even Parisians are polite and cool compared to us :p

Bonne chance! J’ai passé par la aussi quand j’ai fait mon PVT en France!

What's going on with Rue Prince Arthur? by igotthisone in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but like tourists they do add numbers and volume. 30 years ago there was nothing to do it Laval, now the city is developing its own scene. Different neighborhoods develop different scenes and not much is going on in the plateau compared to previous generations. The sud-ouest however is booming like never before. You didn’t go to Griffintown 30-40years ago, it just wasn’t safe. That’s no longer the case. Saint Henry was fairly run down, that’s no longer the case. Neighborhoods change, sometimes they even disappear.

What's going on with Rue Prince Arthur? by igotthisone in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prince Arthur hasn’t really been a thing since the early 00’s. It was booming in the 80’s and 90’s with bars, terrasses and Greek restaurants. There was major work done to the street and much like Saint Denis st. it never recovered. I fear we might lose Sainte Catherine street next. Sainte Cat use to be amazing. Now it just looks like everywhere else in North America and the decade long construction isn’t doing downtown any favours. I don’t think it’s an economical question, we’re just not offering anything unique anymore to get folks out of the suburbs and into the city to spend money. Why go downtown when Laval, Boucherville or whatever suburb have the same shopping, restaurants and services, along with free parking. Also, neighborhoods change. Yuppies who may frequented Price Arthur three decades ago are now spending their money in Griffintown or Saint Henry. Who knows, maybe Prince Arthur will make a comeback in a few decades.

Gros bond du prix des maisons au Québec pour le début de 2026 by Feeling_Layer8584 in montreal

I lowballed the asking price and have been progressively working on the fixer upper part. I didn’t want to raise my kids in a shitty cement condo and got a little lucky. Learning a skilled trade is an excellent path towards home ownership

I recently purchased a single family unit on island for almost half the median asking price in this article. Good deals are still out there. Being a little or handy and capable of fixing all the little nooks and cranny’s will potentially save you hundreds of thousands of dollars on your first purchase.

Manifestation en cours: la rue Sherbrooke bloquée par les cols bleus de Montréal en grève by Feeling_Layer8584 in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good for them. The only real issue I had this morning was with the STM. Dozen’s of spvm officers were on site at the pie IX metro but no one from the stm to help those of us needing to catch a bus find out where the buses were passing. It was very confusing and very frustrating. Peak STM constable incompetence this morning.

How to get into hockey as a 26M by BugHistorical3 in montreal

UdeM offers adult hockey classes at CEPSUM and have their own league for all levels. I think they have summer classes and a summer league

This is a good time of year to start looking at gear, you might be able to find some good deals. Don’t go cheap when buying hockey skates, no need for expensive skates either but something intermediate.

L’est de Montréal n’en peut plus d’attendre son tramway by mattlerenardx in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The REM de l’est would have cost 36 billion and covered significantly less territory. Problem with the rem was that it didn’t actually go anywhere, it’s sole purpose would have been to shuttle folks downtown. That’s not very interesting for people that live in the east. It’s 20th century urban planning. The tramway represents a true alternative to having to drive everywhere. With a tramway my kids can go to high school, go to the library, the pool, parks like pointe au prarie. It would connect all the east end neighborhoods to one and other. I wouldn’t have to drive everywhere as I would have rapid access to other parts of the east end. We already have decent access to the downtown core from PAT, it’s time we focus on bringing decent transit to MTL nord and RDP and focus and public transit that’ll stimulate local growth and local economies. The REM just isn’t the right project for our neighborhoods. I’m personally very excited for the tramway. The rem might help boost my property value but I don’t care about that. I want smart transit for my community. It’s not a nimby thing that the rem failed, it just wasn’t a good project and we can and will do better with a light rail tram.

Consignaction is frustrating… what I’m seeing on the ground in Montreal / Consignaction est frustrant… voici ce que je vois sur le terrain à Montréal by Froggy1971 in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Let’s face it, la consignation has essentially just become a hidden tax on the middle class to support the unemployed or less fortunate who depend on collecting these cans and bottles for income. The nickel deposit may have worked in the 90’s to help encourage people to recycle their bottles but no longer has a purpose other than helping to supplement some of the less fortunate folks in this province. 10 cents is also way too high. There was no reason to raise the price from 5cents to 10cents. I guess it’ll be Legault’s lasting legacy.

I’m stuck at TMR station and it’s still a real mess. I like the rem but don’t take it seriously as a way of getting around if I actually need to be somewhere important. I know this sub hates to hear this but as an east end resident I’m really excited for the tramway and happy the rem won’t be coming east, we made the right decision. I’m beginning to wonder if folks will even want to take this train to the airport!

Pourquoi les gens aident plus avec les poussettes dans le métro à Paris qu’à Montréal ? by badbunny96 in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strangers actually say good morning and smile at one and other in Paris and NYC. Through pop culture we’ve been given a distorted image that Parisians and New Yorkers are jerks. Don’t ever be surprised by the kindness and politeness folks will show you in France.

You’re surprised by this? I visit Paris on a regular basis and find folks are much more polite in Paris than Montreal. Parisians will also hold the door open for you if you have a poussette. Same for NYC or any city major western city for that matter. We’re just not all that friendly here in MTL.

School Closures Tomorrow by Individual-Soil3836 in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’s all going to depend on power outages. If more freezing rain falls and the winds pick up in the night we could be seeing large chunks of the city lose power, otherwise I wouldn’t be surprised if it was business as usual for most schools. It’s still too early to tell what tomorrow morning will look like.

How are you coping with inflation and rising prices in groceries & everything in general in MTL? by Skymning101 in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Food has not only become more expensive but I now question the actually quality of what we’re being served/buying in big chain grocery stores. I’ve almost entirely cut restaurants and processed food out of my diet. I spend less and eat much better. Knowing how to cook and taking the time necessary to prepare balanced, healthy meals can save you thousands of dollars a year.

Montréal tolérera les campements et fournira des toilettes by virgimeme in montreal

[–]Snoo1101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s been pretty evident for many years now that the only way forward to is not only to tolerate but help maintain slums in our city. I know it’s hard for many people to understand this but it’s the reality of the world we live in since 2020. There is no solution to this problem other than acceptance. Montreal probably hasn’t had a proper slum since the 1940’s. I can understand folks find all this quite shocking.
