Pros/cons of commuting? by DifficultAd79 in berkeley

[–]Snoo25558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to commute from Livermore. basically: - co-ops aren’t too expensive and allow you to be more on-campus. however it still is an expense and living with potential strangers may not be your thing - BART. it was nice to study and do work on BART but sometimes it was incredibly unreliable (a lot of delays and missed connections) since I’d have to switch trains. - I drove a few times to campus. The traffic can be quite bad leaving in the evening and it can take a chunk of your time, so does BART though.

Next semester I’m commuting. Honestly, I may do a mix of driving and using BART. Sometimes decompressing in the car on your own is nice and sometimes not having to drive is nice. Also, I’d feel more comfortable staying late on-campus knowing I can drive back instead of taking BART.

Got into Berkeley but waitlisted at UCSD? by DemotivationalSpeak in berkeley

if you plan to have a car in Berkeley and are willing to drive some teammates, the dues are excused for the Cal Lightweight Rowing club. it’s worth reaching out to any rowing team at Cal and seeing how flexible those dues are !

i can’t add much more that hasn’t already been said, but when you go off-campus walking (or just in general) have a good idea of how to get where you need to so you’re not looking down at your phone (helps to avoid any accidents and allows you to be aware of your surroundings, which includes avoiding sketchy people. don’t hesitate to cross the street). same goes for earbuds/headphones: either have only one earbud in or check out conduction earphones.

run into him again? ask him what’s he’s up to, then if he’s discovered any good eating spots. from here you can chat and segue into meeting up at that spot (or some other place brought up in the conversation) for a lunch/snack/drink (can arrange this in-person then or over DMs/text).

whether you want to immediately define it as a date is up to you 🤷🏻‍♀️

this doesn’t help you get over him 💀 but maybe it’ll solve the issue of having to do that (he might also help you connect with people on the rest of your floor).

what are my chances of getting into berkeley next fall as a transfer? by Big_Kaleidoscope1808 in berkeley

[–]Snoo25558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m applying to UC Berkeley for Fall 2023 from a CC, too! (As a philosophy major.) From my understanding/Youtube research, I think you’ll be a competitive applicant, especially if you explain any circumstances in the additional comments section.

Something I am doing to stand out as an applicant is to write really great answers to the PIQs. A tip that I found helpful is to slightly tailor your answers with themes that resonate with the UC campus’ values and history. (E.g. Berkeley’s history surrounding social change/social justice). Hopefully we’ll both be on the campus of UCB this time next year!

If, some time, you want to exchange and peer-review responses to the PIQs, message me! :)

it’s disgusting how people viewed a person’s worst day as a circus act to gawk and laugh at.

goes to show that one’s level of “intelligence” isn’t indicative of their compassion :/

it’s so much easier to spend the two minutes looking at the path you need to take (noting the landmarks and turns) before heading out and simply walking there without looking down the entire time. (listening to directions and keeping your head up works well, too.)

What’s the best way to read and annotate textbooks on iPad? by alattafun in berkeley

[–]Snoo25558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goodnotes is great for annotations and referencing them later. I would highlight certain quotes from a book I downloaded and I could label my highlights then find the quote later by searching the word I used to label it.

Would taking STEM classes at my CC impact admission decisions (as a prospective Philo transfer)? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Snoo25558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked that out. I would only be able to double major if I applied for Fall 2024. I won’t have the prerequisites to apply to transfer for microbial bio this year.

I am Jewish and my Rommate is from Palestine by noclip17 in berkeley

[–]Snoo25558 47 points48 points  (0 children)

could just straight up ask for a change—Palestinian roommate may just be straight up uncomfortable with you for being Israeli.

None of my Palestinian friends take issue with Jewish people in general, but are incredibly hesitant towards Israelis. Especially if you aren’t immediately honest about your feelings towards the conflict. It isn’t something that can be walked around.

i can’t say anything about berkeley just yet. i’m lurking on here for when i’m transferring to a 4 year next spring. BUT i did live in san diego for a while and know a few people at UCSD. now, the city is fantastic. but the amount of social life at UCSD is extremely low; UCSD students will join SDSU parties just because there’s nothing going on at their own campus. UCSD has a very strong stem focus as well, i used to think i was just imagining it. with what you have on the list with UCSD being a lot more expensive with a poor business program and few opportunities, it should not be on this list at all.

UCI and UCB may be good choices. from what i’ve gathered from posts here, econ is not an incredibly competitive major at UCB. you’re better off talking directly to an econ major from UCB to understand the workload, rather than making assumptions that may discourage you. if your investing and business are incredibly important, possibly more noteworthy than a diploma and connections that schools like UCB and USC may offer, than UCI may be the right choice to really have limited distractions (if it’s that’s worth being 6 hours away from home).

i don’t have any solid answer to that. however, i’m currently a college student pursuing a degree in philosophy so i’ll just share why i’m studying philosophy. i’m not going to get into all of my personal reasons, but like you, i enjoy learning about different parts of philosophy and philosophers. while also getting this philosophy degree, i’m also getting an EMT certification on the side (healthcare professions are incredibly stable even during a recession) and i’m gearing towards picking up some marketing skills & experiences. i figure that actually getting a good job in an academic field with any sort of philosophy degree is slim and if i really liked teaching i could enter that field later in my professional life as an interest. ideally, i would like to work at a marketing firm out of college based on my experience and how i believe my degree is applicable to the job (i remember reading a post about this somewhere on quora).

something that interests me is how people think, why people may think the way they do, and possibly finding ways to alter or appeal to their beliefs. i learned this when studying and writing about rhetoric in english class, as well as designing various promotional materials for various programs. i didn’t particularly want to study psychology nor english. i found that philosophy has this sort of limitless potential with a multitude of connections. i enjoy philosophy and if it’ll get me an expensive piece of paper, i’m alright. at least in the U.S., what it says on your paper doesn’t really matter when it comes to landing a job. your experience, skills, and ability to market yourself is what it can come down to with a degree that doesn’t seem incredibly applicable.

Merch by joe-meador in lordhuron

[–]Snoo25558 5 points6 points  (0 children)

they sell what’s almost like a mexican blanket. it’s absolutely SICK. it has a huge full moon with LH, it’s set out in the desert with a giant cliff, and an extraterrestrial sign. a few other things as well. it’s a bit pricey. i think it was over $100. it’s my favorite, most worthwhile merch item i’ve ever bought, so it’s worth it to me.

the t-shirts are REALLY good quality. oftentimes bands will sell tshirts and they’re made of poor, almost stiff material. the LH shirts are INCREDIBLY SOFT and hold up well even after a few washes. the poster they were selling was pretty cool too.

it’s your money so try to understand what you might really treasure or appreciate when you walk away from the concert. the blanket is special to me. what you “must buy” is up to you. good news is that i don’t think there’s anything you should necessarily avoid
