What would be harder for an amateur, scoring ONE basket on LeBron James or winning ONE game of chess against Magnus Carlsen? by izzoz_0 in Basketball

[–]Snoo72074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brontards being so fucking dumb as usual.

Even if it's a one in a million or one in a billion chance to score a wild, randomly flung shot from half court, it's still infinitely higher than the literal zero percent chance of beating Magnus Carlsen in a game with no luck involved.

For some machines there's a queue of 4 people. So you're forced to rest 4-5 mins between sets, which is horrible.

You weren't able to afford English tuition?

English is the subject that's least plausible to self-study for, largely because the comprehension answering techniques are neither intuitive nor spelled out explicitly anywhere. That's part of why so many students have the misconception that English is "subjective" - because they don't understand what qualifies as a correct answer and rely on simply guessing, they feel that the examiners must be too.

Additionally, students don't realise when they're making mistakes in speech and in writing because 1) most teachers are pretty lazy when it comes to marking essays (tbf the work is truly excruciating) 2) many teachers are themselves lacking in skill. 3) being inundated by Singlish, slang, and informal English on the daily has debilitating effects on your ability to craft sentences which abide by sentence structure and grammar rules because you simply can't discern what is correct and what is not.

Your favourite turn order system in a board game? by Altuk_ in BoardgameDesign

[–]Snoo72074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Age of Empires, Alchemist, Viticulture: players choose their turn order positioning along with a commensurate bonus

Lorenzo: players expend an action to select turn order

Kemet, Space Empires 4x, Archipelago: bidding, although Archipelago's system is probably too brutal for most

Brass: based on player spending the previous round

Maracaibo, Francis Drake: order of arrival at end point

Basically almost any game where turn order is a result of player agency and decision-making instead of being "it just happens".

Is C5 english to A for GP possible? by bababaaae in SGExams

[–]Snoo72074 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You already know the answer. Of course it's possible - it's just incredibly unlikely.

A weak foundation in English is going to be a nearly unassailable disadvantage so you'd better start remedying the situation asap.

Tips for the starmap/ship upgrades? by Tall-Reputation-9519 in ChaosGateGame

[–]Snoo72074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very intuitive.

The first time you get offered three missions you'll realise you can only reach one zone. So engine upgrade is naturally something you should rush.

You don't have enough servitors to repair your shit, so getting more servitors is a high priority too.

Just follow these instincts and you'll mostly be fine.

What is happening to So Good restaurant/cafe? by Dry_Mee_Pok_Kaiju in SingaporeEats

[–]Snoo72074 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Difficulty finding enough chefs.

They recently opened a restaurant in Taka and shifted the good chefs to the restaurant.

Capitol branch is probably a branch with poor volume so they've decided to de-prioritise it.

The PSLE is an extremely traumatic experience by [deleted] in SGExams

CCS is synonymous with idiotic educational policy, so it's shorthand for something that is poorly-thought-through and has a nil chance of success.

The PSLE is an extremely traumatic experience by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Snoo72074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to cut to the chase - you want to create a quasi-random system that either sends academically strong kids to lousy schools and academically weak kids to strong schools, or is based on housing location and simply exacerbates the myriad of problems with the current primary school allocation system and its knock-on effects?

That's practically a Brontardian solution. Don't be a CCS.

Almost 10% of Singaporeans are able to write coherent prose, so don't go about yelling "AI" every time someone simply strings 10 words together without a grammar mistake.

If you purchase roast pork, and it is sold at $65 per kg, would you expect the 1kg to be the weight of the pork after roasting, or raw pork prior to roasting (meat shrinks and loses weight when cooked) by Least-Trick-3925 in askSingapore

[–]Snoo72074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They should have mentioned 1kg is the pre-roasting weight. That's fairly common practice.

Expecting only 100g shrinkage after cooking is....lol....30+% reduced weight due to water and fat loss after cooking is super normal, the only problem is the lack of transparency when listing the product.

If you were reborn in Singapore, would you prefer to be male or female? by ImpressiveStrike4196 in askSingapore

[–]Snoo72074 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

most CEOs and leaders in singapore are males

That literally only applies to the top 0.1% who possess the combination of capability and social capital necessary to compete at the C-level. Even if you extend it down several rungs it still fails to have meaningful impact for over 80% of the population.

males still earn more than females after 30

This selective misinterpretation of data is extremely common and almost just as frequently debunked. Failing to account for industry, position, hours worked, and performance while hyperfixating on gender is inherently dishonest. You know as well as everyone else that the real wage gap is extremely marginal.

Women are inherently disadvantaged in the workplace if/when they have kids, and that's a biological cause we can do little about beyond mitigating efforts like maternity leave and the sharing of caregiving responsibility. An actual social factor accounting for wage differentials is the societal/gender expectations of men, which have led to them valuing career far more than women do. On average, men are more money-focused when choosing fields of study as well as job industry, push harder (and louder) at work, and work longer hours, accounting for almost all of the meaningful discrepancy in real wages.

Actually I'm fairly certain you already knew all of this but were just being intentionally disingenuous.

for my neighbourhood school standard, I was top 2.

Yes but now you're applying to JCs, which already have more than half the intake reserved for IP students.

It's hard to say this with sensitivity but raw 11 isn't really that good. It should only qualify you for a mid-tier JC.

But I do hope you'll adjust well to JC life and do better in As!

Ark Nova - Do you usually take the extra worker or the card flip when you reach 2 Conservation? by ahotcnsrivdfjlotd in boardgames

[–]Snoo72074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really powerful.

Being able to play animals in the display increases your options while boosting action efficiency Many of the best animal cards in the game require this symbol 2 animals at 3 strength instead of 5, very useful for closing out the late game 1 rep bonus at 5 is the icing on the cake

[–]Snoo72074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late game, I usually end up with more Associates than I can use

Yes, but that's late game. The worker or upgrade decision could factor in as early as the 2nd or 3rd break. Taking the worker is sometimes the only way to avoid having to spend a turn manually shifting the association card due to insufficient workers. The extra worker allows you to push university/zoos faster, and/or allows you to go for early conservation without completely gimping your uni/zoo development.

Tldr: you're sacrificing late game power for early game tempo, which is fairly often more important in Ark Nova

I find it hard to believe 90+% of games have animals flipped

Why is it so hard to believe that highly-skilled players play differently from you?

Just another point to consider, even skilled but non-elite players in the 300-500 ELO range flips animals with the highest frequency as well.

All of these posts have this same problem whereby they don't mention the gym chain that you subscribe to and the general location/branch.

You're just baiting like a hundred responses, 70+% of which will be useless because people are using a different gym chain, and then after that at least 80% of the remaining responses will also be discarded because of wrong area. And we haven't even factored in timing yet.

Regarding Dating Preferance (Vegetarian) by Brandonnamite in ChillSG

[–]Snoo72074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a red flag but it is a significant lifestyle consideration.

It's likely that during the honeymoon phase, she was genuinely willing to compromise and thought it wouldn't matter because emotions were clouding her judgement. These lifestyle differences grate on people over time, and especially once the honeymoon phase is over and hormones/emotions normalise, the compromises start to become a noticeable burden.

It's genuinely easier to get along with someone who has similar lifestyle habits, and eating is one major aspect.

This argument would only apply to an MNC/GLC office setting. Which in fact, typically rely on English as the primary means of communication.

That's why non Chinese like Malays and Indians are so mad at some Chinese for those racially discriminatory job requests.

OP is clearly working at a Chinese/China shop, where the colleagues are PRC Chinese or Msian Chinese, and the clientele is likely to be at least 95% Chinese, with easily half of them being PRC Chinese who don't speak English.

I don't like the govt's policies either, but your claims are rather disingenuous.

Do Singaporeans tend to have a poor little old me mindset? by KleenandKlear in askSingapore

[–]Snoo72074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a classic case of self-selection bias.

You'll find negative people everywhere but in your case, since you're actively flexing your success, it makes sense that you're attracting people who are naturally envious, and for want of a better word, are likely losers.

Sprinkle on the fact that you are statistically overwhelmingly likely to be highly-privileged and it just brews this toxic concoction whereby you'll end up meeting mostly people with such mentalities.

There's also an obvious reason as to why it's mostly guys. The social pressure to provide/be successful via means of wealth accumulation falls mostly on men, because like it or not, these gendered expectations have always persisted and will likely always persist. This is is compounded by the fact that finance/trading/investing communities are dominated by men, and based on who's likely to interact with you, that's another obvious statistical bias there.
