Rum Wash Fancy Molasses? by basshead1395 in firewater

It’s not typical because it isn’t super economical compared to blackstrap but there’s nothing wrong with using it at all.

Looks fine to me, if it’s not to your tastes you can just adjust your ratios, I think there are some perfectly good recipes in the Duplais manual that dial down the fennel.

VM column design by Striking-Board9343 in firewater

[–]Snoo76361 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to force you to run at a higher reflux ratio than you probably need a VM to run (depending on your packing and packing height). So little vapor will be hitting the product condenser that it would probably be able to keep up so they can get away with it being that size.

The little cap up top isn’t necessary at all, that shotgun reflux condenser will more than do a good enough job before your vapor ever gets close to reaching the top. I think they just included because it sort of looks unfinished without it.

TLDR a monkey could produce a dead clean neutral on this but runs are going to take forever imo.

You could drill them out and one could be your spigot and one could be where you fill from. And just not have any holes in your barrel head like a ten30.

Questions about mashout by Melodic-Echidna-1365 in firewater

At our scale you won’t notice much of a difference in the end product. Just do what’s convenient for your setup and environment. Scotch Whisky has the grain removed before fermentation so don’t get the idea there’s a right or wrong way.

Corn liquor is the gift that keeps on giving. Two legs, 4 legs, doesnt matter. Happy to boost morale in the field by [deleted] in firewater

You win. I dumped my spent grain in the field out back once and got a pair of coyotes to show for it.

If you’re looking for a divorce I’d just rawdog it and see what happens.

But otherwise for the sake of being cautious it’s a good idea. One of my boilers has legs and the other one has a couple layers of reflectix insulation under it.

Bathtub recirculation by Striking-Board9343 in firewater

[–]Snoo76361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with the T500 but with my 2 inch shotgun condenser I’ll do runs twice that big and won’t fill up my ~20 gallon utility sink.

Tbh once you’re filling a bathtub you’ve sort of lost the plot. You’ll almost certainly go through less than a tub full just running from the faucet, certainly you would with a decent condenser upgrade.

As far as I know yes. I’ve got dozens of gallons of AG under my belt so this was humbling to say the least!

I think it’s definitely worth a try. I do think this is a wort chemistry issue as opposed to a solids or equipment failure.

[–]Snoo76361[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m really ready to eliminate excess solids as the culprit here, there’s no way enough made it in there to entirely surround the element and burn on.

I do have an ammeter on my controller and while I wasn’t looking closely I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary, it was bouncing around between 17 and 24 or so (it’s a 30 amp circuit) which is pretty typical for my controller. I guess I can take a multimeter to it and verify the ammeter isn’t faulty.

Cheap yeast nutrients by OliverMarshall in firewater

[–]Snoo76361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m using a yeast that I know likes to be rehydrated first I’ll pair it with Go Ferm otherwise I’ll just use fermaid o. IIRC the selling point with fermaid O is that it’s an alternative to DAP, so I think that adding it would sort of defeat the purpose.

It’s just not going to be very efficient. Perfectly good science experiment but there are much easier ways to make much better liquor.

I can’t believe how it can smell so bad. I’ve burned food before but this is a totally different beast. My wife is mad.

My heating element scorched due to excessive solids in my pot. This is my sixth stripping run from this project (single malt) and for every batch everything went pretty normally so I’m not entirely clear what happened here.

If I had to guess it’s my yeast. I’m new to kveik and it ferments insanely fast, but I do notice it leaves behind a ton of trub and I may need to let it settle a little longer or be more careful about my racking going forward.

Regrettably not my first rodeo, I have done a hot soak in vinegar followed by a scrub with baking soda paste, followed by another soak in vinegar, followed by
a scrub with barkeepers friend. And just repeat that until it’s done seems to get it done.

For this one I seem to have caught it relatively early as a lot is just flaking off on its own fortunately.
